ARCHIVED 4 Tazo Teas Have Gluten
starrytrekchic replied to BRUMI1968's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Bumping this because the Green Ginger just got me. I have a variety of tea bags lying around...some years old, and I picked up the green ginger without even thinking to check for gluten. Later on tumbling rumblings and then I can't focus my eyes on what I'm reading--and I'm super confused because I didn't eat anything new today. Finally thought to check... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease
starrytrekchic replied to manpriya's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, not sure about the ins and outs of the testing, but if you're still showing positive numbers, you're getting gluten in your diet somewhere. It may be coming from drinks, make up, shampoo, any personal care products, or even pet food. Gluten has a way of getting places it shouldn't be. You may be getting cross-contaminated when you prepare foods,... -
ARCHIVED Shared Kitchens?
starrytrekchic replied to TwitchyMcLurcherson's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, I share a kitchen too. I prepare my meals on the plate I'm going to eat off, that way I lessen the risk of cc'ing from counters and cutting boards. Keeping everything clean is a must, but don't feel like you need to clean the entire area, just keep the areas clean that you use. Stainless steel pans are easier to clean. Prepare your and your son... -
ARCHIVED Sudden Alcohol Intolerance
starrytrekchic replied to MegRie's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I don't know why it happens, but it seems to be a common thing. Any amount of alcohol makes me feel like crap--as I'm drinking it, not the next day. Like you, I could drink fine before going gluten free. I've looked into different reasons for this, but so far nothing's panned out. -
ARCHIVED True North Almond Nut Clusters
starrytrekchic replied to foodiegurl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just came to find out about these. I've had them twice and felt mildly cc'd afterward. (The almond pecan blueberry nut clusters.) It's more frustrating because they're listed as gluten free, and the "may contain" on the package doesn't say anything about containing wheat. But they make other wheat products, so I'm guessing they have trace amounts of wheat... -
ARCHIVED Advice Please!
starrytrekchic replied to rlhorst22's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, welcome to the board. Your doc may not have run a complete test (especially if he didn't know what to order) and false negatives on blood tests do happen. You should keep eating gluten until testing. You have to be on gluten for the tests to be accurate. Afterward, you should try the gluten free diet regardless of the results. Have your new doc... -
ARCHIVED Hartz Flea Shampoo For Dogs
starrytrekchic posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Anyone know if it's gluten free? I can't find a list of the ingredients anywhere (not the inactive ones.) Gave the dog a bath earlier--didn't even think to check if the shampoo was gluten free-and within in an hour or so I was feeling the sort of digestive problems that comes with cc'ing. Can't say I was particularly careful with the shampoo, so if it... -
ARCHIVED Caramel Apples
starrytrekchic replied to JCastro's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ah, yes...I saw the caramel apples and nut-caramel apples out at walmart the other day. I got super excited because I love them...then I read the packages, and yep, they had wheat. So disappointing. Don't know if it was the same brand, but some, at least, do have wheat. Not sure about others. EDIT: You can probably make some at home easily enough... -
ARCHIVED Bipolar? Need Advice.
starrytrekchic replied to crimsonviolet's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
First off, it's perfectly okay to go on medication! I'm like you, I'm not keen on it, and I never took it, but I also didn't have to deal with being a parent, spouse, getting the bipolar diagnoses, and trying to go gluten free all at once. You've got a LOT on your plate. If the meds help even you out and get you through the worst of it, then you should... -
ARCHIVED 50 Days Gluten-Free, But Problems Remain
starrytrekchic replied to aly25's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had some immediate relief in symptoms--then it was back and forth for several months, gradually trending for better. New symptoms cropped up, though--around the 2-3 months mark I was exhausted for several weeks. I'd say it took about 4 months for things to really straighten out--but things were noticeably better from the very beginning. Everyone's... -
You know, as long as you skip the obvious toppings--oreo cookie, etc., the blizzards would be gluten free. That's not to say they wouldn't be cross-contaminated--obviously there's a very big risk there (someone makes an oreo-cookie blizzard then makes one for you without cleaning the mixer.) But if you're not particularly sensitive, or if you're okay...

ARCHIVED Anyone Know Much About Low Cholesterol?
starrytrekchic posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I was at the hospital for an unrelated thing several months ago and they were having a cholesterol screening. I tested at 135 total cholesterol, which I thought was great--but apparently it's too low? There's not a huge amount of info out there about low cholesterol--just that it frequently comes from malabsorption. (Note: I was only gluten free for about... -
ARCHIVED Tired Of Relatives In Denial About Celiac/gluten Problems
starrytrekchic replied to Tidings's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's definitely hard. I have three people in my family who need to be tested for celiac (mom with RA, sister with digestive problems and schizophrenia, grandmother with a history of major digestive problems longer than I've been alive) but they all refuse to go to doctors and they all think there could never be a problem with wheat--it's healthy! So I just... -
ARCHIVED Tired Of Relatives In Denial About Celiac/gluten Problems
starrytrekchic replied to Tidings's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Are they questioning your eating and your health...or are you questioning theirs? It's a little unclear from your post. If it's the second, I'd caution from trying to convince them of anything--the more you do the more you'll alienate them--this is generally true of a lot of things! But if they're being actively disrespectful of your personal choices... -
ARCHIVED Recovering From Glutening
starrytrekchic replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Odd, I got glutened last Thursday too! Today was the first day I could eat most of my normal things. The days before this, anything stronger than ice cream would send my intestines into revolt. It'll probably be another day or two before I'm back to 100%. Stick to bland foods. Cold foods, for whatever reason, seem to help me. Just go easy on yourself... -
ARCHIVED Cramps?
starrytrekchic replied to ToriMartin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I feel for you with the bad doctor.... I think brain fog would be because you're either still getting gluten (hidden in foods, cross contamination, non-food household products) or you may be too low on certain vitamins and minerals--hence the lack of brain function. Have you gotten a blood workup of your vitamin and mineral levels? Might also happen... -
ARCHIVED Eating Less Healthy On Gluten Free Diet
starrytrekchic replied to Shanmegjilal's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Well, the gluten-free versions of those foods (cookies, bread, etc) are all more calorie-dense, that's why you're gaining weight. I'm guessing you're craving them because of gluten withdrawals? Though a year seems like a long time to go through that. Stay active, get (or keep) fit, count how many calories you're eating every day, limit your breads and... -
It may help to remember that although your friends don't have celiac, they have all sorts of other problems themselves, whether it's medical, family, relationship oriented--just about anything! It should help to think about how much better you feel off of gluten, how relieved you may be to be diagnosed, how good it is that you don't have to be on medication...

ARCHIVED Unusual Dreams, Heavy Sleep And Day Exhaustion
starrytrekchic replied to GReilly's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Low blood sugar could be culprit, especially if you're not replacing the carbs that have been cut from your diet. Intense and disturbing dreams are frequently caused by low blood sugar--your brain's telling you it can't function right on the fuel it has. The disturbed sleep then leads to exhaustion during the day. If this is the problem--it's easily... -
ARCHIVED Starting To Regress
starrytrekchic replied to Ruth Talbott's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If you had blood tests before, you should have them again--to compare and see if you're still getting gluten in your diet. It could be from shared cooking equipment, products that were cc'd in factory, pet foods, beauty supplies/shampoo, etc., craft or home improvement material, drinks (like flavored coffee), medications and supplements--if you're still... -
ARCHIVED Cramps?
starrytrekchic replied to ToriMartin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Has it happened before? A lot of women get cramps around the time they ovulate (~2 weeks after the period starts/~2 weeks before it starts.) For these women, it generally happens around every 3 months or so (not every month) and may be slightly to one side or the other. That's perfectly normal. If your cycle was messed up before from gluten, it may be... -
ARCHIVED Bipolar Disorder & Adhd
starrytrekchic replied to nikelodeon79's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Celiac can definitely make bipolar worse. First, it can decrease your vitamin and mineral levels--if certain ones of these are too low, your brain is less able to regulate itself. If you haven't already, you should have all your vitamin and mineral levels screened to see if you're deficient in anything. It can also lead to depression--especially with the... -
ARCHIVED Is Anyone Here Rh-negative?
starrytrekchic replied to Ellenor Whitty's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
A+ for me. No correlation in my family. My gluten problems come from my mom, who is O+. -
ARCHIVED Rapid Weight Gain, Help
starrytrekchic replied to Mizzo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Oh yes. Sometimes I feel like I'm starving. (I'm also one who gained weight the worse I got rather than lost.) It was worse before I went gluten free, but since (8 months) I've intermittently had it, usually in the days after being gluten. I'd fill her up on high-fiber and high-protein food. Popcorn was especially useful for me for a midday snack... -
ARCHIVED Diagnosis = Refractory Sprue
starrytrekchic replied to yogamommytrainer99's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Are you checking for cross-contamination at the factory with already prepared foods? You may be more sensitive, meaning you can't have gluten-free foods that are run on the same lines as gluten-containing foods. Things like chocolate and chips are particularly problematic. Try going through all of the foods you regularly eat and checking on-line and with...
