ARCHIVED Glutened. Most Likely Culprit?
starrytrekchic replied to domesticactivist's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Nothing stands out for me. You might go back to yesterday's meals too. Sometimes these things can take a day or two to surface. Could any of the things you used be cross-contaminated? The butter at your house? The spices wherever you get those (assuming they are the sort you refill at a store). Pure spices are usually fine (mixed sometimes aren't... -
ARCHIVED Exercise And Losing Weight
starrytrekchic replied to Celiac Mommy 5704's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
None of that about gluten is true. It should take up to a few days for undigested gluten to pass through your body after you've eaten some. It's not stored at all--it's broken down during the digestive phase. I'd recheck everything in your diet--especially anything new you've added. Check for cross-contamination (in factory and at home), any medications... -
ARCHIVED Arghh....my Fiance And His Mother The Nurse
starrytrekchic replied to Alison R's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The genetic tests would certainly be interesting, but over 1/3 of the population has the genes that increase chances for celiac (24% for DQ2 and 10% for DQ8, according to wiki). Some doctors will give a diagnosis based off diet response. Is there anyway you can call his doctor and find out what she advises? Tell her you don't want to wait until April?... -
ARCHIVED Weight Has Not Changed
starrytrekchic replied to jess-gf's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I never gained or lost any weight gluten free. If it doesn't happen for you in the next few months, you'll probably have to lose it the hard way. Healthy isn't synonymous with good for your weight. Check the calorie counts for what you've been eating. Dried fruit and nuts are diet killers, and gluten free replacements are often higher in calories than... -
ARCHIVED Arghh....my Fiance And His Mother The Nurse
starrytrekchic replied to Alison R's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I realize you want him to be better (and it certainly sounds like he could have celiac), but he has to stay on gluten until his tests are done. If he doesn't, he'll have false negative bloodwork. He'll also likely need a endoscopy after the bloodwork, and he'll need to be on gluten for that. As serious as celiac is, he's not going to fall over dead within... -
ARCHIVED Incredible Disappearing Chin Hair? Hormonal Changes?
starrytrekchic replied to domesticactivist's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Malnutrition can lead to increased body hair, but AFAIK, correcting the malnutrition won't make it go away. More likely, she's just going through a natural hormonal shift (not due to gluten free). Hair growth goes through cycles, and sometimes it simply comes in more quickly and thicker than other times. -
Nooo...you definitely have to mention it. You have to declare anything that can cause health problems and death, and though celiac-caused lymphoma is rare, it does happen. If the OP was to get celiac-caused lymphoma and hadn't told the agent about it, they could refuse to pay the insurance.

ARCHIVED Another Question About Coffee's
starrytrekchic replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Also, instant coffee might not be gluten free. Coffee is hard on the stomach (actual stomach.) You might want to drink less for a bit, or substitute with tea. I've had a few times where my stomach was clearly not okay with coffee (but it definitely wasn't a celiac reaction)--I just gave it up for a few days and then drank it in moderation. -
ARCHIVED Please Help...celiac Panel And Genetic Test
starrytrekchic replied to DoogiePCT's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'd go ahead and give the diet a try. If your headaches and stomachaches are due to gluten, they should start clearing up in a few days (with lots of ups and downs--but slowly trending for the better over several months) assuming you follow the diet perfectly. If you do have celiac, it might take a few months for you to start gaining weight, so I'd give... -
ARCHIVED How Much Weight Loss Should Be Good?
starrytrekchic replied to Fire Fairy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Your ideal weight depends on a lot of things. I'm the same height, 5'5", and my ideal weight is around 136. But you have to take into account body build, muscle mass, chest size (for girls), whether you have narrow hips/shoulders or broad hips/shoulders, how fit you are, etc. Pants sizes aren't a great indicator because they vary so much from manufacturer... -
ARCHIVED Hope I Don't Offend Any Of You Southerners, But....
starrytrekchic replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
True southerner here. I was raised with both plain grits (with salt, maybe butter) and the milk/butter/sugar combo. Both were fine! Never added cheese to them, though. I've heard of it, and normally I'll add cheese to anything, but that just sounds awful. I always went the butter/milk/sugar route, due to the sweet tooth. -
ARCHIVED Playing Detective Again
starrytrekchic replied to Ox on the Roof's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What type of tea? Some Tazo teas aren't gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Heart Palpitations And Gas?
starrytrekchic replied to jaybee465's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thanks. I don't seem to have any of the other symptoms...though I do randomly feel a bit faint when standing. I think I know someone with a blood pressure cuff, so I'll try that. -
ARCHIVED Fructose Malabsorption?!?
starrytrekchic replied to Free-CountryGirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Limiting the high fructose foods is definitely a good start. Like you discovered above, fm happens when your intestines can't absorb all of the fructose & some makes it to your large intestine. It's not like celiac. It won't matter if you're not eating it for a long time then do eat some--the reaction will be same as if you were eating it regularly... -
Everything I've read (and the coffeemate reps) say that coffeemate is gluten free, but I got sick off their Honey Vanilla Creme twice. Haven't had a problem with their sugar free versions & I'm too scared to try their sugary ones again. I don't think anyone else has a problem with them though.

ARCHIVED Fructose Malabsorption?!?
starrytrekchic replied to Free-CountryGirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It shouldn't be fructose malabsorption*. FM is common, and if your intestines are damaged due to celiac, it's even more likely, but small amounts of those foods shouldn't trigger it. (Fructose isn't an interchangeable word with sugar--it's just a type of sugar.) People with Fructose Malabsorption need to avoid foods that are heavy on fructose in relation... -
ARCHIVED Positive Bloods - Negative Biopsy
starrytrekchic replied to CeliaCupCake's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Stick with the diet! A positive blood test indicates celiac. Your immune system reaction may not be severe enough to have caused intestinal damage yet, or you might be a slow developer. Additionally, the person who took the biopsy might not have biopsied the right spots (especially if your intestinal damage is intermittent) or may not have taken enough... -
ARCHIVED I've Had Enough :(
starrytrekchic replied to Kimbalou's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Make sure the chocolate isn't cross-contaminated in factory. What's the brand? A lot are cc'd and it's not on the label. Are you getting enough fiber? -
It could be a few things. Some people gain weight as a symptom (cravings due to malnutrition, blood sugar problems, body going into starvation mood and clinging to every calorie.) If that's the case you're just settling back to your natural weight. More likely, you're just losing all the bloat weight. You might also not be getting enough calories...

No, it's not normal. However, if you've been eating relatively decently, a trip to McDonald's might make you sick for other reasons (not used to that quality of food.) Give it a few days and then eat something that's both healthy and gluten loaded (whole-wheat sandwich?) If you feel sick after that, it's probably time to talk to a doctor about it.

ARCHIVED Feeling So Discouraged
starrytrekchic replied to scouter99's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Keep in mind that celiac reactions aren't always immediate. You may have eaten something a day or more before the symptoms set in, and once your body starts reacting, it might feel like it's reacting to everything you eat for several days (or even up to a couple of weeks.) I'm always hesitant to recommend someone remove more from their diet, especially... -
ARCHIVED Heart Palpitations And Gas?
starrytrekchic replied to jaybee465's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm curious about this because it seems like most of my palpitations occur when I've just sat down, but I haven't seen this listed under things that cause palpitations. Also, I don't get any of the other symptoms of blood pressure drop, except on very rare occasions. Though, I do hate salty things & pretty much never eat them, so that might mean something... -
ARCHIVED Heart Palpitations And Gas?
starrytrekchic replied to jaybee465's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Not sure if this will help, but... I didn't have any heart palpitations (other than the once or twice a year most people get) until I was gluten free for almost a year. Now I've had them the last two months. They started with one extended, scary palpitation (almost 30 seconds long) and have varied since. I have them most days. The first month they... -
ARCHIVED Could Really Use Some Advice
starrytrekchic replied to mommyoftwinks's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I believe you can have the hives themselves biopsied to test for dermatitis herpetformitis. That only occurs with celiac, so if it comes back positive, you'll have a celiac diagnosis. That would be my first step. My other would be to get copies of all your old test results, if you can. Post them and one of the more knowledgeable posters might be able...
