  1. That they are. A mob is moving north on Yonge St (the main drag) smashing windows and looting indiscriminately. Web news Open Original Shared Link with pictures and commentary updated minute-by-minute.
  2. Say, Queen Emily, about the earthquake... Somebody told me that is the fault of Quebec. I also heard that it was an unsuccessful attempt by Quebec to separate. Things seem quiet on the G20 front at the moment. The protesters have returned to the park where they started their march and seem to be setting up camp for the night. Tomorrow will...
  3. We're home now, but have to go back in the morning.
  4. The G20 Summit is here in TO this weekend. The main venue is the Convention Centre downtown, about 6.5 miles south of my store. There are about 19,000 police and military security between this location and the G8 meeting (in progress now) in Huntsville, about 135 miles north of the city. Various nutheads always show up to protest.
  5. I'm keeping my head down, but a group of about 1000 G20 protesters are clashing with over 100 police in riot gear about five miles south of here. The are also reports of a possible major gas leak at the same location with fire crews responding.
  6. I just have to share this with the psillies. We have been at our current store location since September 2006. For that entire time, there has been a derelict car in the parking area across the street. The plates on it expired in 2004. Overnight last night, somebody decided to express an opinion about it.
  7. This week has been very slow at work. It seems like everybody has left town. The store is about 6.5 miles due north of the battle zone G20 Summit site, and the downtown area is in virtual lockdown. The G8 leaders are meeting now about 135 miles north of here. I guess that means we only have a G12 here.
  8. I know of no soda sold in Canada or the US that has a gluten issue. Caramel color is a celiac myth--it is safe, at least in North America. You have indentified in your post most of the other potential issues regarding sodas. I drink diet Coke and have not had any issues in ten years as a celiac and over twenty as a diabetic.
  9. This is a good discussion and is of general benefit to all persons on the gluten-free diet, not just parents of children with celiac disease. I am moving it to the more general gluten-free product discussion forum.
  10. Burt's Bees is under new ownership. That said, the "we cannot guarantee" disclaimer is fast becoming universal because, like it or not, it is the truth. All of these manufacturers buy ingredients from outside sources and none of them are willing to accept legal liability for a possible error by a supplier.
  11. Much discussion has taken place over the last four years. McDonalds fries have been independently tested and found to contain no detectable gluten using the most sensitive ELISA test available. Cross-contamination is on a case-by-case basis and cannot accurately be generalized.
  12. Earthquakes are not common in these parts, but they do happen from time to time. We were at the store and felt the building shaking. Some merchandise rattled a bit, but nothing fell. Becky slept throught it, but Caramel was thoroughly spooked.
  13. We had an earthquake about 20 minutes ago. Caramel was not impressed. It lasted about 15 seconds.
  14. Three negatives on the specific antibodies, with the control being normal.
  15. Without the reference ranges (which vary by lab and test), it is not possible to fully understand the results. I am neither a doctor nor a lab technician, but my first glance says that is a negative for celiac. All the relevant numbers are low. IgA serum is a control to ensure that antibodies are present overall. If that is below normal, then the other test...
  16. Oh, and one more thing. I can't speak specifically to the Cayman Islands, but in most jurisdictions in North America, the local health code absolutely prohibits anything not from an approved supplier going into the kitchen. If the food is not from their kitchen, or has left their possesion for even a few seconds, it can not be taken in and must be discarded...
  17. Had a great meal with Tink brown rice pasta, tomato sauce, and the infamous balls. Bagheera walked on the table during dinner. He keeps wanting to eat from our plates. We are trying to teach him that this is a no-no. Rachelle--what a way to start the day. That guy has 300 on me, but I can grasp what he was getting at when he said it felt swollen...
  18. I've never been charged extra for wanting gluten-free food, but in my case it has always been a matter of choosing carefully and having sauces and seasonings left out. That doesn't cost them anything more. But if they have to buy specialty gluten-free items like cake mix, bread, or similar stuff it kind of makes sense. Gluten-free versions are notably more...
  19. Great news from Bev! We want pics! Will check back later. Must go remove my balls from the phreezer and warm them up, and put the water on phor supper. Gluten-free spaghetti coming up.
  20. The tenth anniversary of my diagnosis is two weeks from today. I feel so much better today than I did then. Symptoms took time to go away, but I had had severe issues for about five years, and my villi were seriously damaged. You do go through a grieving process, but once I got past that I never looked back. Beer was a hard thing to give up, and I was...
  21. My point is that, no matter how hard an establishment tries, they can never guarantee 100% against cross-contamination. Nobody can, because there are too many possible sources. Anyone who makes such a claim is either misinformed or lying outright.
  22. Dextrose and dextrin are different ingredients. Dextrose is a form of glucose (a sugar) and is gluten-free.
  23. Nobody can honestly guarantee that, and anyone who claims to is at best mistaken and at worst lying.
  24. Doze 'merican ones are thicker than ours...
