Have a safe trip. Hopefully things will be sorted out quickly in Texas and you can soon focus on family in NJ and friends everywhere. -
ARCHIVED More Product Updates
psawyer replied to eeyor-fan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Shampoo can get on your face and into your mouth as you rinse. You may touch your face, thereby contacting the makeup, and then (for whatever reason) touch your lips without washing. Hand lotion can get into your mouth the same way. For those who are highly sensitive, this is a valid issue. -

Thank you for the birthday wishes. It has been a good day so far, but the heat is keeping me indoors at the moment. Fifteen minutes ago, the observation at the airport 2 miles west of here was 90F. With the humidity, it feels like 97F. It could be worse, though. The relative humidity is only 36%. There is a bit of sadness in the house. Due to escalating... -
ARCHIVED Surviving A Hospital Stay
psawyer replied to mushroom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Digressing a bit from the original topic: If having ketchup available in the school cafeteria will keep the students there, instead of crossing the street to get lunch at McDonalds, the concept of "the lesser of two evils" comes to mind. -
ARCHIVED Spring Valley Folic Acid And Prenatal Vits
psawyer replied to gflooser's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Maltodextrin and dextrose are not a concern. Dextrin can be derived from wheat, but as a previous poster said, is usually from corn. If the package is labeled as gluten-free, then I would take that to mean that nothing is derived from wheat. -
Exactly my point. If you are concerned about the undetectable possible gluten level from the flavor, why on earth are you going anywhere near a restaurant, especially a fast food one...

ARCHIVED Is This Gluten
psawyer replied to hercules25's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Some people react to vinegar, but it is generally accepted that distilled vinegar is gluten-free; in the US, if the source was wheat it would have to be explicitly stated. Most vinegar in North America is made from apples (corn is the next most common source). The only vinegar that is a concern in terms of gluten is malt vinegar, and it will always be listed... -
ARCHIVED Dedicated gluten-free Brands?
psawyer replied to Becksabec's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
For pasta, Tinkyada is excellent and they make only gluten-free products. I prefer the brown rice ones personally. -
In the United States (and only in the United States) there is a wheat derivative used at the plant where McDonalds fries are manufactured. That derivative, along with a dairy derivative, is used to make a beef flavor. That flavor is added to the oil in which the product is partially fried before being frozen and shipped. At the store, the frying process...

ARCHIVED Not Receiving Notification Of Answers To My Posts
psawyer replied to Mari's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Notification is not enabled unless you turn it on in your personal settings. You can select the option to watch topic that you have replied to. It is not retroactive, it applies to replies you make after selecting the option. I have never used the "Watch this topic" feature--like Connie I look at all topics with new posts. As such, I really don't know... -
ARCHIVED Feeling Better By The Day

I'm glad to hear that you dealt with the problem and are feeling better as a result. Keep on truckin'. -
Maltodextrin is gluten-free, as is monosodium glutamate (MSG). MSG is the sodium salt compound of glutamic acid, an amino acid present in proteins. A minority of people, including a minority of celiacs, have an adverse reaction to MSG. This reaction has nothing to do with gluten. Most foods contain glutamic acid as part of the proteins in them. When...

ARCHIVED Blood Test Accuracy
psawyer replied to angiegoo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
tTG IgA/IgG *273 (0-20) is a strong positive on a test that is rather specific. False positives are uncommon. Even if your biopsy fails to find damage to your villi, you should seriously consider trying the gluten-free diet after the biopsy. You say you have no typical symptoms, but there are over 200 known symptoms. It was a year into the gluten-free... -
ARCHIVED Fasting Glucose & Celiac
psawyer replied to Seeschell's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wish my A1C was only 6.6. Yours is in the uncertain zone, with 6.0 or less considered "normal" and 7.0 being considered "optimal control" for a type 1 diabetic. Mine runs around 7.6 to 7.8. Tighten up on your carb counts, and remember that many gluten-free substitute foods are higher in carbohydrates than the gluten-loaded ones that they replace. From... -

It is a deduction from your before-tax income. Only the difference in cost between the gluten-free item and an ordinary food can be claimed. If there is more than one person in the house, and not everybody is a celiac, then you must keep track of what portion is eaten by the celiac, because only the differential cost of that is deductible. For example...

ARCHIVED Dry Onion Soup Mix

Most Lipton soups have noodles in them which contain gluten. The regular dry onion is gluten-free--to my knowledge it is the ONLY Lipton mix that is. -

You should be able to edit your post for up to 48 hours after making it, but the easiest way is just to delete the image from PhotoBucket, thereby breaking the link. -
ARCHIVED Monosodium Glutamate?
psawyer replied to texasgirl19's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Monosodium glutamate is controversial, but is definitely gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Chicken Or Veggie Broth/cubes Canada
psawyer replied to kaiess's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Knorr makes bouillon in several forms. They will clearly disclose any gluten source in the ingredient list. Their brands include Bovril. If I recall correctly, the Bovril powdered beef and chicken are both gluten-free, but the cubes are not (gluten is what binds the cubes together). We use Bovril beef powder regularly, but I don't have a package of chicken... -

We are both at home now, after stopping for pizza (yes, Em, there) on the way home. The thugs are still running amok in the downtown area. A fourth police car has been torched by the thugs and is still burning as of the last I knew. There are reports in the media, just now confirmed by official sources, that police have used tear gas and have fired... -

Jacquie is at the store, but I am at home. The crowds are moving north, toward the store, but they are still over five miles away. I'm going to leave in a couple and head down there--I'll be offline for about 25 minutes if the roads are clear.
