ARCHIVED Lara Bars
sa1937 replied to Rowena's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Have you tried Kind bars? I really like them better than Larabars. I can find Larabars (not many varieties) at our local Wal-Mart. Giant Foods carries both, but again not all varieties. So much for living in a small market area...no Whole Foods or Wegman's in sight. -
Rice Chex makes good people treats, too. And that's probably why wheat is also used as a cheap filler in people food, too.

I didn't realize that Nutro has a line of doggie treats. My dog, an 80-lb golden retriever/yellow lab mix, has been on Nutro Lite dog food (the lamb and rice version) since she was about a year old as she was having chronic ear infections while on her previous beefy dog food. She does get Milk Bone treats but only at night after which I wash my hands well...

I've paid quite a bit more at my local health food store for certain items, too, just to save a trip but have generally found better prices at a larger grocery store for many of the same items. And their products don't completely overlap. My local health food store is so crammed that I don't think they have room for more products. Of course, I live in...

Well that's not at all a surprise then.

I'm probably not the one to answer this, but hopefully he did a number of biopsies for which you'll probably not get the results for about a week??? From what I've read here, going on a strictly gluten free diet may give you the answer before you get the official biopsy results (I'm going on the premise that he did biopsies). False negatives are not unheard...

You mean "try as we may" with unintentional CC from time to time...or do they intentionally eat foods that are a no-no?

ARCHIVED 3 Years On, Still Sick.
sa1937 replied to up late's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
While I certainly wouldn't want to wish celiac on anyone, I am glad my daughter was diagnosed so she would take it seriously. I fully expected the results to be false negative since she didn't binge on gluten like did. Her endo reluctantly ordered the celiac panel although he told her a couple of years ago that he doubted she had it as "it is very rare... -
ARCHIVED Cookbook Christmas List
sa1937 replied to bincongo's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks for your response! That's interesting. I'll have to try the biscuits. The recipes for breads are interesting in that some only call for a single flour or starch, which basically goes against anything I've ever learned about gluten free baking. And lots of egg whites and baking powder or baking soda but no yeast although in her first book she says... -
Both for me. But living in a small market area, the breads around here are almost always frozen, which usually means that they have a shelf life that won't quit. I can't say that my breads always turn out well but I usually end up with something edible. No Whole Foods or Wegman's in sight. I haven't bought any other baked goods but I figure I have half...

ARCHIVED 3 Years On, Still Sick.
sa1937 replied to up late's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My 44-year old daughter was just diagnosed the end of Aug. Her response, "Thanks a lot, Mom." She's also in grad school (class of 2012). Thankfully she was eating pretty gluten-light for several years and never did have the severe digestive systems we've had. But she is hypo-thyroid and is also anemic. I was shocked that she ended up positive on her... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Medications
sa1937 replied to Loey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Here's another one I've referred to: Open Original Shared Link It's compiled by a pharmacist and updated frequently. Of course, if push comes to shove, it's always wise to contact the manufacturer directly if you feel the least bit uncomfortable going by either list. -

Well, DH or DH...I guess they could both flare. I'm glad your hubby is so supportive. And I think we can all use as much humor as we can get! I just don't take life too seriously any more...have had enough of that just dealing with feeling crappy (thankfully, I've improved tremendously and hope you will, too). It's good the forum gets you out of bed... -
I've had a lot of problems with my eyes, too. They were really irritated, dry and uncomfortable last winter. Right now I still have some discomfort but not nearly as bad. I also use two different eye drops for pressure, as well as Restasis morning and night and also OTC GenTeal Eye Gel before I go to bed. For awhile I was on an antibiotic eye ointment...

Me three. It did used to say that at the time I joined but as I recall some of them got way too long. I'd love to see a simple location shown (voluntarily, of course). I've always wondered where people are from as we are quite a diverse group.

ARCHIVED Cookbook Christmas List
sa1937 replied to bincongo's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Have you made any breads from "You Won't Believe It's Gluten-Free"? I tried the Everyday Loaf (Corn-based) twice and absolutely bombed. I also tried Rolls (Potato-based) and they were also a failure. It's puzzling to think of using only a single flour or starch and have it turn out. After trying those one weekend, I have yet to try anything else. I... -

ARCHIVED Substitute For Self Raising Flour
sa1937 replied to blissfully-unaware's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Oh boy! I think I'm probably not the right person to ask about this as I'm pretty new also. I'm sure you probably can use guar gum but don't know if the amount would be the same as for xanthan gum. What are you planning to bake? If you've noticed, a lot of gluten free recipes also call for more eggs than we'd normally use in gluteny baking, vinegar... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Stickers
sa1937 replied to Patti B's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Mrs. Grossman's stickers are pretty popular and will probably be available in a lot of craft stores like Michaels, A.C. Moore, JoAnn's and Hobby Lobby if any of them are near you. -
ARCHIVED Cookbook Christmas List
sa1937 replied to bincongo's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I can't tell if it has holes or not. I figure with gluten free dough, I'd probably end up lining it with parchment paper anyway. It's the "Nonstick French Bread/Baguette Pan - 16 x 8 Inch" by chefgadget. And of course, we know I can't link to it. I figure it'll help hold the shape of the dough. I may try the recipe I've used before that was posted in... -
ARCHIVED Cookbook Christmas List
sa1937 replied to bincongo's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
OK...I just bit the bullet and ordered "Gluten-Free Baking Classics" by Annalise Roberts. I did browse through the book and like that you can mix up smaller batches of flour. Of course, I cut some recipes in half anyway so that makes sense (especially breads that make two loaves and I only want to make one). And if I find one flour mixture I really like... -
ARCHIVED 1St Gluten Free Holiday Coming Up - Need Pep Rally!
sa1937 replied to sahm-i-am's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It'll be my first holiday season gluten free, too. Since I'm not hosting Thanksgiving dinner, I think I'll just add another dish - a wild rice stuffing. No way do I want the rest of the family to miss out on their gluteny (and yummy...lol) bread stuffing. We always have tons of food so no problem for me. -
ARCHIVED What Do I Do If Want To Give One Individual My Home Email Address?
sa1937 replied to Loey's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
You're welcome, Loey! That's what makes this forum so great! Very helpful people here, some of whom have been gluten free for years and they know a whole lot more than I do. I don't know of any local support groups around here...I'm sure you'll meet a lot of nice people and learn a lot. I think Lisa has a great idea...keep a food diary. I never did...
