  1. I've seen black rice at a local shop that carries Asian foods. I have to confess that I had never seen it before. Do you have access to an Asian store that you could ask?
  2. Thanks for the replies...guess I'll test the waters one of these days and hope I'm one of the celiacs who can tolerate gluten free oatmeal (at least occasionally). Of course, I have no idea yet how I'm healing...
  3. Bluebonnet....what kind of flaxseed meal do you use? The regular (in wont of a better name) or the golden? I tried a bun for my hamburger and felt the regular had too stong a taste. I think it was Hodgson Mills "Milled Flax Seed", which I keep in the fridge and it's not old. Otherwise I was surprised that it did turn out. I also used a whole egg...
  4. Thanks, Skylark! You said it better than I could have.
  5. Any idea how long it should be before trying oatmeal? I've been gluten free for 5 months and just bought a bag of BRM gluten free oats but haven't tried them yet. I do need to make sure that when I do, I need to plan to be home that day (just in case). I really do miss having oatmeal.
  6. My daughter was just tested. When she went to her endo for a normal follow-up for her thyroid, she came armed with my celiac panel test results plus a copy of the info from my endoscopy/biopsy (both positive) and basically insisted that he order the test for her. She had talked to him a couple of years ago about testing her and he told her that he was sure...
  7. Holy cow! I've never heard of it being that expensive. I paid $3.84 at my local Wal-Mart and I thought that was expensive since it's only a 16 oz. box.
  8. More and more companies are doing it (i.e., adding the CYA statements). Guess they just don't want to accept the liability of putting gluten free on the label even if it seems like a product would be gluten free. Does it make it safe? Not necessarily...we have to make our own decisions as to what we feel comfortable buying and what are own intolerances...
  9. I actually saw it at my local Wal-Mart but didn't buy it. Darn! I don't really have a problem right now but come winter, my hands are always a mess. Thanks for the suggestion!
  10. I suspect it's a CYA statement Wal-Mart has added based on advice from their Legal Dept. IMHO since product ingredients can be changed or modified at any time, your best bet is to always read labels for the most up-to-date info. Once you get used to it, it really doesn't take that long to decide whether to buy a product or not. For that reason I've just...
  11. There's an interesting article on IGA deficiency in the new Oct/Nov issue of Living Without magazine that I just received yesterday. I just pulled up their website and unfortunately it's a subscriber's only article. My daughter just had the newer DGP test done and tested highly positive for celiac, which I was concerned about as I felt she probably wasn...
  12. I've found soy-free Earth Balance at my local Wal-Mart.
  13. I have to agree with this. Wonder where she got the recipe that turned out so terrible as I don't recall seeing it on the liveglutenfreely website. Sometimes I need something quick and we don't have a store full of choices for gluten free items (at least where I live). I appreciate having a company like General Mills make gluten free items that are readily...
  14. Wow! These sound great! Thanks for posting. I'm craving a burger so think I'll try it for lunch.
  15. This recipe is from The Gluten Free Kitchen by Roben Ryberg. I just got the book but haven't tried the pancakes yet so can't comment as to why they didn't turn out. Her intro to this recipe says, "These are mild, thick pancakes, fashioned after the buttermilk pancakes made from mixes that are found in the grocery store baking aisle. They are great served...
  16. Did your Mom watch Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution? If so, a perfectly good reason to pack a lunch. It's really horrifying to see what school lunches consist of today. Back in the dark ages when I went to school, lunches were prepared in-house and didn't consist of the terrible already prepared food served today.
  17. I just received this cookbook a few days ago and was pleased yesterday when I baked this "Buttermilk Loaf"...it was so fast and easy. Since I had no buttermilk, I added slightly more than a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass measuring cup and filled it with Lactaid milk to make 1-1/4 cups. I was pleasantly surprised how well it turned out...
  18. Too bad doctors aren't automatically issued common sense, compassion and good bedside manners upon graduation from medical school!!!
  19. I'm glad to hear the good reviews of "The Gluten Free Kitchen" by Roben Ryberg. I just ordered this book from Amazon...had to add something to my order of a muffin top pan in order to get free shipping. I know her flours are pretty simple with easy to find ingredients.
  20. My package says "Gluten Free" on the back just above the nutrition info. Now, these are the large ones, not the minis.
  21. That's the brand I have, too (also purchased pre-diagnosis). I made corn muffins on Weds. using it and didn't have any problems either. They're also something I don't have very often.
  22. I've didn't even know about the Jimmy Dean Breakfast Skillets...I love having these emergency-type meals on hand, as well as having breakfast for dinner. Just added it to my shopping list. After going gluten free, I spend very little time in the freezer section except to pick up a bag of frozen veggies now and then (mostly I've been buying fresh fruits...
  23. Thanks for the flour recipe, Tricky Mama! After you posted the the name of the cookbook, I pulled it up on Amazon and browsed through it. I really don't do that much baking as my kids are grown with families of their own (I live alone so don't have a need to stock up on cookies, etc.) My greatest quest is to try to find a bread recipe that I can want...
  24. A little more effort than dragging yourself to the microwave but this is pretty fast and easy...Hillshire Farms Kielbasa, Ore-Ida Tater Tots and a veggie you can nuke. Another thing I like...Bear Creek Creamy Potato Soup Mix: Open Original Shared Link I add a couple of medium peeled and finely diced red potatoes, a package of Birds Eye Steamfresh mixed...
  25. I just noticed that this recipe for zucchini bread has no salt added to it. Has anyone made this and found the taste to be somewhat flat due to the lack of salt? Just curious. Otherwise the recipe sounds really good.
