  1. You are so right about having to insist and go with your mommy instinct. I had been complaining of my son's diarrhea since infancy. Finally, as his symptoms began to worsen just before his 5th birthday (lethargy, pale, sunken eyes, discomfort, extreme thirst, etc) I went in and 'demanded' a full work up, including things such as diabetes, thyroid, anemia...
  2. Just when I think I can stop worrying, something else pops up......... Here is a brief history...... Son has had watery, acid diarrhea poops HIS WHOLE LIFE. He is now 5.5 yrs. Diagnosed with Celiac by positive blood work (low on the abnormal scale, but still abnormal) and endoscopy (on a scale of 1-3, he was the worst at a 3) in march of 2010. Started...
  3. just another FYI- I am providing the kindergarten class with 3-4 batches every 6 weeks or so. Just recently tried to double the recipe and it worked well, so it is even faster now!
  4. Hi! I had posted this on another thread, so I just copied it and will paste below........ Mix dry ingredients: 1/2 cup rice flour 1/2 cup cornstarch 1/2 cup salt 2 tsp cream of tarter Add 1 cup of water, and 1 T oil, food colouring if desired. Mix well. Heat a pot with 1 T oil over medium heat (don't get it too hot). Give the wet ingredients...
  5. I was not comfortable with having regular playdough in my son's classroom. Just too many opportunities to have it spread EVERYWHERE! Kids aren't that great at washing their hands, And, my son often puts his hands in his mouth, chews his nails, etc. I volunteered to provide gluten free playdough for the classroom for the year. I am enjoying making the contribution...
  6. Definitely the brown over the white rice pasta- white is sticky and mucky. Brown is much better.
  7. I believe many of the pastas have an 'energy' saving cooking method on them- don't have one right in front of me right now, but I believe it involves bringing the water to a boil, then putting in the pasta and putting a lid on it and letting it sit 20 minutes. You should be able to do that with a microwave safe bowl and lid! kim
  8. Sorry it took me so long to get back here- completely forgot until I was making playdough yesterday for the kindergarten. Here is my recipe- I find it works great. The teacher says she prefers it to the 'traditional' dough. Mix dry ingredients: 1/2 cup rice flour 1/2 cup cornstarch 1/2 cup salt 2 tsp cream of tarter Add 1 cup of water, and 1 T...
  9. Hello! We went the 'homemade' playdough route, and I am now the sole supplier of playdough for the classroom. About every 6 weeks I get another request for a few batches. It is fun! For christmas I made a cinnamon/nutmeg scented one. Next they want plain white. I can post the recipe- but my little one is just waking up and fussing, so will come...
  10. Hello Experts!!! I come seeking your advice. My son, Jacob (aged 5.5) was diagnosed in March via blood test and biopsy. He has always been an extremely busy, talkative, loud, 'out of control' boy. (yet at other times so gentle and loving!!) He appears to often not be able to stand still, sit still or 'focus'. Once he was diagnosed, and on the gluten...
  11. I don't have any detailed or earth shattering suggestion for you, but wanted to let you know that it took us quite some time to see an improvement in my son (age 4 when diagnosed, 5 now). I would say it took at LEAST 3 months to start to see an improvement, and now at 8 months into it, I am finally beginning to be able to tell when he gets 'glutened'- not...
  12. I am not even really sure how to word this question........... My son(age 5) was diagnosed with Celiac about 8 months ago, and has been doing very well on the diet. I would venture a guess that he has been reacting to Gluten all of his life. Prior to diagnosis, he never/rarely complained of belly pain (but has always had foul, fluffy, weird diarrhea). ...
  13. Hugs to you Mamma! I can completely empathize with your statement of being scared either way. I was the one who pushed for Celiac testing through our pediatrician. When the results came back positive for my son (aged 4, almost 5 at the time), I had many people give me a hard time when I was upset- they felt like since I had aske/pushedd for the testing...
  14. Hello Again! Well, we got the blood work back and the result was great- 1.7 (over 7 is abnormal). I guess that is a good thing, right!? Am I correct in assuming that this means we are doing a good job of eliminating Gluten from his diet? Perhaps his "normal" with stools is on the looser side? I know as far as the medical professionals are concerned...
  15. weluvgators- would you be able to explain what you mean by tweaking and refining your gluten avoidance? I feel like we have the 'basics' down, and that is as far as the "help" goes from the GI Dr and dietician. I really do feel like we are missing something. For example, here is what Jacob had today... Breakfast: yogurt, Glutino toast with his own peanut...
  16. Thanks for your replies and inquiry! The appointment was a complete waste of time! They didn't have his blood work back yet! They didn't seem concerned about it however, and said, if you are trying the diet, the blood work should be improving and they aren't worried about the things I was worried about. I suppose this was supposed to make me feel better...
  17. I am so worried that his blood work won't show improvement! We have been trying SO hard (as does everyone, I would imagine!). My son (age 5.5) has still had diarrhea quite frequently- a couple of times a month, including a couple of days before his blood draw. Definitely an improvement over the pre-gluten free bathroom visits, but not the miraculous improvement...
  18. So interesting that you should post that question! It is something that I have been wondering with my son (who was positively diagnosed in April of this year). Prior to diagnosis, he was ALWAYS in the bathroom- either with diarrhea or peeing. More recently we KNOW he was glutened (took a big bite of a regular hot dog and bun). The next day he was peeing...
  19. I am somewhat frustrated and confused. I asked at Starbucks if they had anything Gluten Free as I had heard that they did. They have these small bags of cookies- the brand is lucy's. I was so excited because my son would love to have a treat when I get my coffee. Once I sat down and read them, I noticed that on the front of the bag it says 'no milk. eggs...
  20. Hi Emily, My son is pretty bad for having his hands in his mouth. Also, the other kids are also playing with the playdough and may not (likely not) wash their hands after playing with the playdough..... it can get everywhere! His preschool class room had a table (like a water table) full of different kinds of pasta. I wasn't aware of this...
  21. I figured, that of all places, this would be the best to talk about poop! My son (age 5) was diagnosed via blood work and edoscopy/biopsy and has been gluten free since the end of March. We have seen definite improvement, however, I am not sure exactly how much better we are doing. He still has 2-5 stools a day. Probably averages around 3. Although...
  22. I believe Mike and Ike's say gluten free right on the box (my son is only 2 months gluten free, but we have had birthday parties and goody bags to figure out! )
  23. Thanks so much for all of your replies. I have been trying different recipes to find a good one and would be more than willing to provide it for the classroom (teacher is awesome and willing to do what ever it takes to keep him 'safe'!). I am not thrilled about the results I am getting though. They are either crumbly or like a rubber ball. Anyone have...
  24. Interesting! My son (age 5) was diagnosed Celiac in March. He has ALWAYS craved milk. We call him our milk hound. Even as an infant (we have known something was wrong with his bowels/digestive system his whole life) he would drink HUGE amounts of milk. Now that he has been gluten free for 2 months his milk and liquid consumption has normalized somewhat...
  25. I can only offer you *hugs* of support. We are new to this too. My son was Dx late April of this year. Every time he gets a tummy cramp or loose stools, I am wracking my brain to try to figure out what I did wrong. I have been told by many others to not be too hard on myself and to allow a YEAR to get a hold of this new diet. I understand your frustrations...
