ARCHIVED Confused About Nuts
MartialArtist replied to Skylark's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was SOOOO ticked off today when I read that line on my individual bag of cashews from a Kirkland's box I bought at Costco. I thought I had been SO careful when shopping to make sure I was buying a simple product w/no wheat and no cross-contamination possibility, but the warning on the box itself is printed inside an offset white square with black letters... -
ARCHIVED Sitting Here About To Lose It
MartialArtist replied to MartialArtist's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Proud ArmyWife -- that's actually a good analogy b/c you think about it all the time and the rest of your world (of people) cares and is interested but not involved and therefore not able to understand your near-obsession with it. Hopefully, though, that subsides eventually (you and I are both new to this) and it becomes part of you (like motherhood!) but... -
ARCHIVED Struggling With Coming To Terms With How Stupid I've Been
MartialArtist replied to williamsburg000's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I gotta chime in with the rest here. There is NO reason you should have made the leap to celiac on your own -- especially w/minimal digestive symptoms. You really need to cut yourself a break. Even if you suspected it at times, it's a hard diet to follow when you don't have a diagnosis to support the need and you aren't experiencing noticeably better health... -
ARCHIVED Sitting Here About To Lose It
MartialArtist replied to MartialArtist's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks everyone. The support (and even the "tough love") is much appreciated. I learned to do Martyr Mom from my own mom (neither of us is particularly dramatic about it -- we just sacrifice what needs to be done to make things work for the family, even if that's our last bit of energy or whatever). I broke my foot a couple of years ago and had to stay... -
I'm about to lose it and I need to vent to a virtual room full of total strangers who have a better chance of getting it than anyone else. I'm 5 weeks into this uber-fun ordeal of re-learning how to eat and cook without wheat (and I was a total carb junkie, so that's really freakin' hard). Understandably, the rest of the world is going on with their lives...

Ack! How is it that I understood enough to ask my pharmacist about my prescription drugs and I checked my toothpaste and shampoo and lotions but it never even OCCURRED to me that I needed to wonder about plain ol' pain relievers??!!

ARCHIVED Why Does My Stomach Hurt Today?
MartialArtist replied to MartialArtist's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Coffee was regular brew coffee. My mixer and all the pans I used were bought since I got the diagnosis and I keep them in a separate cabinet that no one else uses w/any gluten stuff (or anything else for that matter). Only thing I used that was older was my spatula for scraping the sides of the pan, but it's one I rarely use that lives in a drawer that... -
ARCHIVED Why Does My Stomach Hurt Today?
MartialArtist posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
First, I didn't really think I had digestive symptoms before my diagnosis, but I'm now starting to think that stuff I ignored or attributed to consumption of spicy or acidic food (like jalapenos or wine) were actually gluten-caused (b/c those things seemed to always go with pastas and such that are so bland they couldn't have been the cause of my problems... -
ARCHIVED Cleaning My Waffle Iron
MartialArtist replied to MartialArtist's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks. It's encouraging that more knowledgeable folks (from experience if nothing else!) don't think I'm a complete fool for even trying. I will scrub it good, make a few batches, and hope for the best. The recipe I have found that I love requires separating eggs, so it's not a quick-and-easy weekday meal at this point anyway, so it's not likely that... -
ARCHIVED Cleaning My Waffle Iron
MartialArtist replied to MartialArtist's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Sounds like a plan, sorta... I have further discovered today that the brand (Vitantonio) is out of business so it is not replaceable with a duplicate. The ones that you flip (like they have in hotel breakfast buffet rooms) are the most highly rated now, but I'm not sure I want one that will take up that much space. Buy my concern, not fully understanding... -
I have a really nice Belgian waffle iron that I have used for years making wheat-flour waffles. Now that I'm gluten-free, I don't want to have to replace that one if I can help it but I want to be able to make the thick waffles like that (I found a recipe and made them in that for family and used a cheap regular one I picked up at Walmart (got what I paid...

ARCHIVED Fruits And Vegetables!
MartialArtist replied to dhiltonlittle's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
OMG! This sounds AWESOME! I SO can't wait to try this out! (I'm only a little more adventurous with my eating than your average child, but this sounds like something I would love and even my kids would eat happily!) -
ARCHIVED Visual Disterbance/ Migrain - Lasting 4 Months Now
MartialArtist replied to gary'sgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That doesn't sound like optic migraine issues. I have had what has been diagnosed as an optic migraine, though luckily for me, the headache doesn't follow. What happens to me is that I lose all vision in the upper left corner of my right eye (like the wedge from 10:00 to 12:00) for a period of 5-30 minutes -- it's just a black triangle. From what I've... -
ARCHIVED Buying A Stand Mixer
MartialArtist replied to MartialArtist's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Do you do gluten-free cakes or regular or both? Just curious b/c before my diagnosis, I was thinking of starting a (very small) cake decorating business (but not wanting to do more than one or two a week, so nothing I'd need an industrial mixer for). I'm curious both about whether you have any problems with working with the gluten-containing batter/cakes... -
ARCHIVED Bc Yellow Cake Mix
MartialArtist replied to macocha's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We tried it as directed on the box and found it to be very dry. But I've read suggestions like adding a cup of sour cream and a box of vanilla Jello pudding mix to it to make it moist, so I'm intending to try again soonish. Note that it only makes a single-layer 8 or 9" round, so it's not a highly generous mix... -
ARCHIVED Looking For Some Help For My Son....
MartialArtist replied to Nolan'smom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
In addition to the fabulous ideas provided already: Yoplait yogurts (not sure what other brands are ok but this is my favorite brand, so I made note of that quick!) Lay's Stax (look and taste like Pringles only slightly thicker) Rice Works Crisps -- the baked cinnamon ones are especially yummy There are a ton of no-flour peanut butter cookie recipes... -
I have never owned a stand mixer but find that I now really need one for mixing up gluten-free breads, especially from any of the mixes I've found. So hubby is looking at getting me one for Mother's Day (my request!) and asked whether I want a home model or a professional/industrial model. I said it needs to be a "heavy duty stand mixer" and he said those...

ARCHIVED Constant Hunger Pangs
MartialArtist replied to bridgetm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Just making sure -- everything I've read anywhere says Butterfinger and Baby Ruth are fine from Nestle. Stupidly, Nestle Crunch are no-nos (as are things like Butterfinger Crisp or even the BBs), but the actual Buterfinger bar is gluten-free. Now if you're saying "fortunately" for caloric self-control, more power to you, but I just want to be sure that... -
ARCHIVED Constant Hunger Pangs
MartialArtist replied to bridgetm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Reassuring to know I'm not the only one who seems constantly hungry (2.5 weeks gluten-free now). All I want are carbs, and while I'm doing fine subbing the gluten-free carb options in, most of the ones I've found that I like are sweet and I really just want some more hearty, salty options (and Glutino pretzels don't do it for me). Probably just gluten withdrawal... -
I was at a Celiac support group meeting last Wednesday and I shared in a casual conversation with a couple of people what I thought was kind of an extreme emotional reaction to this whole thing. Half laughing (at myself), I said that working in my kitchen, where other family members can and do eat and prepare foods made with wheat products, I feel like someone...

ARCHIVED Tinkyada Pasta W/ And W/o Rice Bran
MartialArtist posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was poking around on Amazon looking at the bulk-purchase options for gluten-free products and just now noticed that the Tinkyada pastas are all available w/ and w/o Rice Bran. Turns out the lasagna noodles I bought locally were w/o rice bran and the penne noodles I bought were w/rice bran. Both tasted great and were indistinguishable from regular pastas... -
ARCHIVED Top Three Worst Gf Products
MartialArtist replied to anerissara's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Lovin' this thread! Worst to me: 1) Glutino cheerios type cereal -- smelled like an old lady's perfume for some reason and texture totally wrong 2) So far, haven't liked Bob's Red Mill or Pamela's pancake mix, but I'm going to try again b/c I've seen so many rave reviews -- maybe I was just mad they didn't taste like my beloved Bisquick... 3) Glutino... -
ARCHIVED Calling Manufacturers
MartialArtist replied to CeliacMom2008's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am almost 40 and most of my friends are my age. We all thought it was hilarious. It's worth hitting redial for a few minutes to get through. But you HAVE to be quiet after the English/Spanish question b/c it's voice activated in addition to having the touchpad options. And if you laugh out loud, it may restart the menu options! :-)
