ARCHIVED Possible For Young Breastfed Baby To Have Celiac?
GlutenFreeManna replied to samuella's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't know how/if your having celiac affects the nutritional quality of your breastmilk, however I just wanted to say that yes babies can be born with celiac. It is genetic but symptoms can show up any time in life. Your children and all your first degree relatives (parents, siblings, etc) should be tested even if they have no symptoms. If the tests... -
ARCHIVED Just Got My Results Back...
GlutenFreeManna replied to ked85's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your dr is no good. You're right about that being lame. Get a new dr or push for additional testing witht he one you have. If you want to test the diet to see if it helps it is recomended you trial it for several months. The only problem comes if you want an official diagnosis later. Once you have been gluten free for several montsh you would have to... -

ARCHIVED Some Help Please...
GlutenFreeManna replied to OntarioJoe's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, do keep eating gluten until May 17th if you can handle it. I'm not sure what your dr meant when he said that about their not being specific tests...there are specific tests (Kareng posted links above), HOWEVER the tests cannot rule out celiac. They are designed so that if they come back positive it's very, very, very accurate. If it comes back negative... -
ARCHIVED Just Got My Results Back...
GlutenFreeManna replied to ked85's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Keep in mind about 20% of test results are false negatives. With your family history and your current symptoms have you considered pushing for an endoscopy with biopsies? Don't let them just label you IBS and give you meds--that is not a diagnosis, it is a set of symptoms. You can either keep pushing for testing or you can just go gluten free without diagnosis... -
ARCHIVED Some Help Please...
GlutenFreeManna replied to OntarioJoe's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes I agree with Karen. You have not been gluten lite for very long so I don't think you need a 3-month gluten challenge. With only 3 days "almost gluten-free" you will not have healed enough to get rid of any damage anyway. Get into see your dr. You should be able to get the blood tests done immediately on the same day as your appointment. -
ARCHIVED Just Got My Results Back...
GlutenFreeManna replied to ked85's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think you need to get a copy of your test results to see what they really did. If they really just did a gene test then they did not test you for active celiac disease at all. The gene test just tells you if you have the most common genes. The genetic test alone cannot diagnose or rule out celiac (because you can have celiac and still not have the two... -

Soy sauce is easy to replace if you Mum uses it in a lot of things. There are gluten-free soy sauces or Wheat-free Tamari sauce. I use a non-soy soy sauce called Coconut Aminos--it tastes just like soy sauce. Ask the gluten-free pizza place what they do to make the gluten-free pizza safe. Most places will cook their gluten-free pizza on foil or a special... -
ARCHIVED How Careful Do I Need To Be?
GlutenFreeManna replied to rdunbar's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Do you have a significant other or do you live alone? What is your employment? If you don't want to share these things online that's fine but they may give us ideas of other things to suggest.... I had a problem a couple months ago where I kept getting glutened and I could not figure it out. My husband had gone gluten free for me except for eating oatmeal... -
ARCHIVED How Careful Do I Need To Be?
GlutenFreeManna replied to rdunbar's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
It doesn't sound like it's anything in your diet (someone else might suggest something however--I don't know what reactions nightshades give). Have you checked all of your personal care products? Lotions, laundry detergent, deodorant, dish soap, hair spray, shampoo, conditioner, even nail polish. Also do you live near construction or do work that takes... -

That does sound excessive. I have never done anythign like that. It sounds like she needs to get a blog or a Caring Bridge page. You might want to (gently) reccomend Caringbridge.org to her. She can make a page with pictures of her son and write her updates on there journal style. Then it lets her just post a link on facebook for the people that want... -
ARCHIVED Losing Friends Because Of My Food Restrictions
GlutenFreeManna replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
LOL. I think this would get me fewer friends. Looking forward to May though since it's Celiac awareness month. Maybe I should post a new fact about Celiac disease every single day? THAT could get excessive and really drive people away. Hmmmmm...... -

Ha ha! Thanks for the laugh. I really think my life is pretty boring. Maybe THAT is the problem? they would rather I post about politics or religion or something controversial? Oh and I also wanted to add for the poster that said they removed their niece--did you know you can block people's posts so they don't show up in your fb newsfeed? It takes... -
ARCHIVED Losing Friends Because Of My Food Restrictions
GlutenFreeManna replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I guess I should clarify when I say most my posts were about it...I don't even post that often on fb. Maybe three posts a week. And usually I am posting things like "Trying Zpizza's Gluten free Vegan cheese pizza for the first time tonight." Or "making some gluten-free banana bread, Yum!" Most of my posts are about food--and actually that is what I posted... -
ARCHIVED Threshold Of Acceptability
GlutenFreeManna replied to October3's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Those companies are just giving CYA statements. NO company can guarentee that anything is 100% gluten free. Although some things you can be more sure about than others, it is physically impossible to test for no gluten. The most sensitive test detects 5 PPM. From an experience standpoint--I am very sensitive to cc and I have not had to worry wbout... -
ARCHIVED Hydrolyzed Wheat Flour
GlutenFreeManna replied to Lisa's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
So if I'm understanding this article correctly...hydrolyzed is the same thing as fermented? Because haven't they already shown that long fermented sour dough bread doesn't cause symptoms? But they didn't know if it would still do damage? Quote from the article: "A total of 16 patients with celiac disease, ranging in age from 12 to 23 years were evaluated... -

ARCHIVED Losing Friends Because Of My Food Restrictions
GlutenFreeManna replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh yes, it has gotten better since I got my allergy testing done and got the epipen. My skin allergy tests came back negative, still waiting on the blood test results. Once those come back I am getting a medical alert bracelet with all my allergies printed on it. My doctor agreed with me that even if the results are negative I can probably never safely... -

ARCHIVED How Strict While Pregnant?
GlutenFreeManna replied to gfreewife's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If you don't have celiac (or a gluten intolerance) I don't think you need to worry about it. If you keep your baby gluten free then you will not be able to get him or her tested for celiac when they get older. -

ARCHIVED Losing Friends Because Of My Food Restrictions
GlutenFreeManna replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well that was mostly before I knew for sure what I was allergic to and before I got my epipen. A lot the things I am invited to are thigns like baby showers or a group of ladies getting together at a restaurant. In the past they tried to accomodate me with a gluten-free restaurant or else I would bring my own food to someone's house, but when my throat... -
ARCHIVED Plastic Plates...
GlutenFreeManna replied to RangersFan's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It depends on if they have a lot of scratches in them. The gluten gets in the scratches and may not rinse out, but if you scrub them good they should be okay. Or just stop using them for yourself. The bigger risk is probably going to be from you touching gluten food you are giving your children and then making or eating your food without washing your hands...
