ARCHIVED How To 'break The News'?
GlutenFreeManna replied to Annaatje's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just tell them I have multiple food allergies at first (which is true because I do) and to not count me when planning for food. I will just bring my own food. I may ask what they are having so I can try to bring a similar meal for myself, but most of the time I take a salad with cooked chicken strips. I always make sure I get a drink even if I don't... -
I don't think steroids will help you much with accidental glutening and they may cause additional side effects that would make your trip equally unpleasant. I think you need to try and plan ahead as much as possible. Pack as much gluten-free food as you can--things like Lara bars and Enjoy life bars. Be sur eyou have your Pepto Bismol or whatever OTC med...

The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
GlutenFreeManna replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have a pan similar to this one: http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?id=1060C633-1E0B-C910-EACFE8DFBA39D12F&killnav=1 I'm pretty sure it was under $5 when I bought it in the store. I had to buy new pizza pans because I used pizza stones before gluten-free and those don't really work with this type of crust anyway. You might try some parchement... -

This is my favorite crust. I've never had trouble with it sticking that much, but I use a non-stick pan and pour extra oil on it. It for sure needs two rises. I have tried skipping a rise before when I was in a hurry and it was still good but was a more dense crust. ETA: I have done it with both the KA flour mix and using my own flours as called for... -
ARCHIVED Food Lion?
GlutenFreeManna replied to nerdolicious's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I live in Virginia, but I have Food Lions all around me. I have found the selection varies greatly from store to store. There are a couple Food Lions that have huge Organic's sections with an aisle of gluten-free food and even a freezer case. But most of my FL stores have very little except for the mainstream items like Chex cereals. And in those stores... -
You should NOT eat only packaged items labeled gluten free because there is no current regulation of the term "gluten free". Those items may not have any gluten added but they can still contain small amounts of gluten. Even if a law were made that gluten-free labeled items have to be tested for gluten, the most sensisitve test detects 5 PPM. There is no...

ARCHIVED I Think I Just Got Glutened!
GlutenFreeManna replied to dube's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have never seen any brand of shredded cheese that contains gluten. It may have corn starch, but never seen wheat, barely rye or oats. Corn is not something celiacs have to avoid-- unless they have an additional allergy/intolerance to it. -
ARCHIVED My School Doesn't Understand
GlutenFreeManna replied to CourtneyLee's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Can you bring in your own pans and utensils to use? You would have to label them well and probably keep them in your locker so that you know that no one else uses them. But this could be a great opportunity for you to learn to cook new gluten-free meals AND show your class that gluten-free food can be tasty. I think the only problem would be if the class... -
ARCHIVED Peach Cobbler
GlutenFreeManna replied to mbrookes's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
What type of flour blend do you use? I have rice flour, brown rice floru, tapioca flour, buckwheat, potato flour, millet, corn flour, chickpea flour...maybe a few others...Would like to make this without having to buy an "all purpose gluten-free flour" as those are just too expensive. -
ARCHIVED Am I A Wimp?
GlutenFreeManna replied to sunnydayzahead's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I haven't been able to work for 3 years now because of this illness. I've been gluten-free for 1 year 5 months and I am considering going back to work part time in the future but I prefer to stay home because I have other food allergies to worry about besides gluten. I do various at-home jobs to bring in a little extra money, but we completely live off... -

I have not had Kroger brand but I would eat them if that's all they have for ingredients. I eat Fritos sometimes and the only ingredients are corn, corn oil and salt. -

ARCHIVED Annoying Friends!
GlutenFreeManna replied to Victoria6102's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I have gotten glutened from sharing a water bottle..so that was not in your head. I also had unexplained seizures/fainting prior to going gluten free. As far as the youth group goes...tell an adult please what is going on. Where is your youth leader or his wife when all this was going on? Were there no adults in the car that knew about your celiac disease... -
ARCHIVED Yogurt And Peanut Butter
GlutenFreeManna replied to divamomma's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have never seen milk that has gluten in it, unless you are asking about milk substitutes (rice milk, almond milks, etc). It is US law that companies must label wheat, but they don't have to label barely, oats or rye. So the chance of hidden gluten ingredients is small (but still possible). If the ingredients look ok then most of the time they are. -
ARCHIVED Yogurt And Peanut Butter
GlutenFreeManna replied to divamomma's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have never seen any peanut butter with gluten in it. Most brands of yogurt are gluten free. The only yogurt I know of that is not is Activia--says "may contain wheat" on the label. Maybe a few other types that have things like cookies or granola in them would not be safe but it would be obvious. Yoplait brand is pretty mainstream and I think they... -

I make this soup with a whole chicken all the time: http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/2008/11/crockpot-turkey-and-wild-rice-soup.html I've always meant to freeze it but there is never enough left over. My husband and I finish it off in two-three days. -
ARCHIVED Disneyland
GlutenFreeManna replied to beatthewheat's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I don't have any experience there, but there are many threads here about eating gltuen free at Disney. Disney does great with gluten-free, but I think you do need to call ahead to get the gluten-free options. The problem will be your friend's parents. Can your mom talk to them and explain that this is a serious medical condition? Or perhaps you could... -

Thank you for sharing your experiences. My dr reccomended probiotics because I have been on a lot of really heavy antibiotics the last few years, starting when I had a staphe infection about three years ago and most recently for pnuemonia. ARCHIVED Can Gluten Hide?
GlutenFreeManna replied to deaja's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you are saying that you just ordered a salad from a restaurant without asking about cc concerns, then yes the salad could have been cross-contaminated in several ways when it was made. They could have put croutons on it and then picked them off when they saw the order said no croutons, they could have mixed it in the same bowl that they mix all their... -

Thanks. The brand I'm using is Solaray Non-dairy triple strain (3 Billion) Mulidophilus. it was the only one I saw that was dairy free at my local Vitamin Shoppe. I haven't had any stomach upset just a lot of stomach gurling/rumbling like it's hungry, but I'm not able to eat much in one sitting. Questiosn for you (or anyone that knows): if I order a... -

Yum! I've done breakfast in the crockpot several times with great success. I think I will make an overnight breakfast casserole this weekend. I also wanted to mention you can supposedly make "pancakes" in the slow cooker too: http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/2008/05/crockpot-pancakes-recipe.html These don't really look like panckase though but I bet...
