  1. I haven't tried those but will look out for them. If you are craving ice cream cones there are Eskal brand ice-cream cones available in Coles which are reasonably priced.
  2. Thank you very much for your very extensive and helpful information. Some really good advice there regarding gluten-free foods and possible destinations. I heard that Outback Steakhouse does gluten-free but it would be a bit embarrassing to be Australian and go to an Australian themed restaurant for a meal. I would have to put on a fake American accent...
  3. Hi and thank your for your helpful info. I haven't seen Lara bars but look forward to trying those. I had a quick look at the blogs you mentioned and will have a good look at them soon. Plenty of excellent information there. Really helpful thankyou.
  4. Hi Mango I remember when you visited Australia and were looking for advice. You are probably right regarding gluten-free foods in the U.S. I suppose in Australia celiac disease is fairly widely known (and becoming more so all the time) and there are products easily available in supermarkets but I would expect that because the U.S. has such a large population...
  5. I would suggest you contact the Coeliac Society of South Australia as they should be able to provide you with a list of gluten-free restaurants and any other advice you require. Do you realise that a blood test for celiac disease will not be accurate if you have not been consuming enough gluten. For the blood test to be accurate you need to be eating...
  6. Hi Karen, When you have worked out your itinerary let us know and we may be able to help. We have travelled to Sunshine Coast (Noosa), Gold Coast and Sydney recently so may be able give you some suggestions. I think kids enjoy Australia Zoo but big pineapple is a bit dodgy from what I recall. If you are on the sunshine coast make sure you go...
  7. Hi Karen, I think you should find it easy to find gluten free products here - certainly easier than the U.S. How long has it been since you have been in Australia? If you go to any Coles or Safeway supermarket to the aisle which has health food you will find various gluten free products such as crackers, cereals, pasta, biscuits, muffin mixes,...
  8. Glucose Syrup, Dextrose and Caramel from wheat are Gluten Free because they have been so processed that they have no detectable gluten. I know it is confusing when you read the 'wheat' in brackets but they have to do that because of the labelling laws. The vast majority of people who are coeliacs do not react to glucose syrup, dextrose or caramel. There...
  9. I can't say that I have tried the Orgran alternative grain mix but I will ask around tomorrow as I work at the celiac society here on Fridays. The Orgran factory is about a 20 minute drive from where I live and they have an outlet there which is quite handy as you can get all their products in one place. I mainly use their pasta's, crumbs and flours...
  10. Thanks Hak1031 Good to know that New York and Disneyland are so gluten free friendly. I think I would manage the labelling there. Our very strict laws came in about 6 years ago so we were very similar to the U.S. before that and I do remember it could get a bit tricky. As you said if in doubt don't buy it.
  11. Thanks AutumnE The hotel with the kitchenette is definately a good idea. I will check out the Gatlinburg threads also as that sounds interesting. I hadn't thought of Tennessee but I will certainly look into it.
  12. Thanks Donna I have read on these forums that Disneyland is great for providing gluten free options which is wonderful as otherwise it would put us off going there. The fact that you can get gluten free food at Disneyland is fantastic and makes us even more excited to be going there.
  13. Thanks Tarnalberry It's great to hear that you haven't had any issues when travelling. Seems like the health foods stores are the go then.
  14. Thank you Phyllis for your helpful information. We always rent apartments when we travel within Australia so we can cook if we need to especially for breakfast. That is a good idea to do the same thing in the U.S. It probably wouldn't be too difficult to locate a wholefoods stores as you said and stock up for the trip. I know what you mean about cooking...
  15. Has anyone tried the 'Vitality' brand of bread? It is now only available at some health foods stores but apparently may be in Safeway/Woolworths soon (at least in Victoria). There are serveral varieties - white, breakfast loaf, fruit, herb and garlic. Will probably be the same price as Country Life and Moores brand. Also they are planning to bring out...
  16. Sounds good! Do you know that if ice cream says 'glucose syrup from wheat' it is still gluten free? So if you look at all the ice creams in the icecream cabinet you will find many that are gluten free.
  17. Hello, We are thinking of visiting the U.S.A. next year and probably visiting Disneyland, New York and one other place that we haven't decided upon yet. My 11 year old daughter is a celiac and I was wondering how easy/difficult is it to buy gluten free products and to eat out gluten free. I have heard often that travelling gluten free...
  18. Thanks. Will check it out.
  19. Did you try the gluten free mini burger? My 11 year old daugther loved it. That is annoying about Wagamamas. How hard is it to have a bottle of gluten free sauce on hand. If you are going Asian you could bring along your own gluten free soy sauce (Fountain brand and Changs also I think). Did you look on the dining guide on the Coelaic Society of...
  20. The letter is basically to confirm that you are a coeliac. Otherwise people would be wanting to join who aren't really coeliacs and who haven't seeked appropriate medical advice. It's more of a legal thing really.
  21. Crown Pizza and Ribs is definately fine as they advertise in the Coeliac Society newsletter all the time. They are also on the dining list which I gave you a link to above. If you are in the city and needing a quick, tasty but definately not at all healthy snack then try 'lord of the fries' which is at Flinders Street station and on the corner or Elizabeth...
  22. Which pizza restaurant are you talking about specifically? Pizza Piazza in Chapel Street is absolutely fine as the owner is a coeliac and they have been doing gluten free meals for years. Yesterday I went with my daughter who is a coeliac to Crust Pizza in Port Melbourne (they have other outlets) and they do gluten free pizzas there also. I didn't watch...
  23. Hi and Welcome Firstly, which state do you live in? There are many, many restaurants in Australia that cater for those on a gluten free diet. Some have gluten free marked on the menus and some just have a good understanding of what gluten free is. If you join the coeliac society in your state which you should definately do they will provide...
  24. You are right to be annoyed about the situation I think. She should have been able to eat her donuts with the teacher knowing that she has allergies. I live in Austrlalia and in our school of 290 students we have 10 nut allergy kids and 4 celiac kids. Nuts and nut products are banned in our school and most in schools that have children with nut allergies...
  25. You need to actually ingest gluten into the intestine for it to have any effect. Using soaps, shampoos etc. that might have wheat as an ingredient is not a problem unless they eat or drink it. You cannot absorb gluten through the skin. I think there are lot of myths regarding this.
