  1. Hi, Where are you looking to purchase your gluten free food. Do you know that it is generally not found in the supermarket but in the pharmacies. Not all pharmacies will have the same range of gluten free foods but it is well worth popping in to one when you pass by to see what they have in stock. Schar is an excellent brand for gluten-free foods...
  2. That sounds strange that they won't cook what you request without a list of ingredients. If you have grilled fish or chicken with vegetables and rice than the ingredients are there - chicken, rice, potatoes etc. What more do they need? I think the brand Schar is German which makes great gluten free food. Maybe if you look at their website they might...
  3. If all goes well with the trial the vaccine would still be about 5 years away. There are other people in other countries working on a vaccine also. It is being designed to help those who are in fact celiacs to 'switch off' their immune resposne to gluten. People do tend to eat a healthier diet on a gluten free diet but there is nothing stopping people...
  4. This trial is for Celiacs not for those with gluten intolerance. The purpose of the vaccine is to switch off the bodies immune response to gluten. It is in trial stages only but so far they have had some success and it looks promising. There is no way that they will release a vaccine unless it has been tested to be 100% safe so it could take years....
  5. It is not aimed at the general population at all but at diagnosed celiacs.
  6. The people in the trial are definately all celiacs and have to fit very strict criteria before they could be part of the trial.
  7. Coles homebrand lollies are now mostly gluten free. You will see on the label 'contains wheat' but that is because of the glucose syrup. In case some of the newer coeliacs don't know glucose syrup is gluten free as it has been tested 'no detectable gluten'. Mission Brand wraps have a corn tortilla which is in Coles near the mexican food. Not sure if...
  8. A good thing about the site is that a lot of the recipes have been rated by people so you can get a good idea of the end result of the recipe by reading the comments.
  9. If you click on the link below you will go to a very interesting story from Australia which describes the celiac vaccine which is now being trialled. If you click on video you will be able to see the story which was screened during the news here. Open Original Shared Link
  10. Very interesting. I am not surprised that you are finding it easy to get gluten-free indian food as so much of their cuisine is naturally gluten free. We often go to our local indian restaurant here knowing that almost everything is gluten-free. It is good to hear that the awareness is there also which I am surprised about. Have you dried a Dhosa? ...
  11. Do you get Yakult in Canada? It is a probiotic drink in a tiny bottle which looks like milk. It tastes good a bit like juice. It is gluten free also. You have one of these small bottles per day. According to their website it is sold in 30 countries and they started selling in Canada in 2007. Have a look in your supermarket. They keep it in the...
  12. Hi amber That's interesting about your sister having reflux first before she found out about her coeliac. I am definitely going to adhere to a strict gluten free diet as living with the side effects are just not worth it. The biggest change for me in my diet will be my lunchtime meals. I'm so use to making a sandwich and satisfying that quick fix without...
  13. Hi Whiterabbit (Angie), Firstly we are not doctors here so it would be best to go and see your doctor or gastroenterologist for advice first. It sounds like you should get yourself onto a STRICT gluten free diet. If you eliminate totally all gluten from your diet then you should start to see an improvement in weeks or months. It could take some...
  14. All of the recipes come from Australian food and cooking magazines. They often publish gluten free recipes or specify which ones are gluten free. As it is an Australian site there may be some terms you are not familiar with. For example, plain flour is all-purpose flour. Here is a link to a site which may help out with some of the terms used...
  15. Here is a link to a great recipe site called www.taste.com.au. They have a section which is just for gluten free recipes. The recipes have been tried and rated by members. I have tried the gluten free chocolate brownies and they were delicious. Open Original Shared Link
  16. I didn't realise that La Porchetta did gluten free pizza. Which La Porchetta was it? I have heard that some let you can in your own base and they will make it for you using their toppings. What topping did you have? Did you use your own base? Cross contamination can happen unless they put it on it's own tray in the pizza oven. Have you joined the...
  17. You would join the NSW Coeliac society. There is usually a local area representative for each of the country locations that you can contact. Each state has their own society but there are regional local contacts which the NSW society will put you on to. Open Original Shared Link
  18. That list is interesting but not totally relevant to Australia as we have different labelling and food producing laws to the U.S.A. What I am saying is that if a product is labelled as gluten free than it has been tested gluten free. Even if there are trace amounts of gluten when tested they are not allowed to label it gluten free. This happened with...
  19. The labelling laws in Australia are some of the strictest in the world. If a product is labelled gluten free then it has been tested by the food testsing authorities to be gluten free. There are products that have wheat on the label but are in fact gluten free. For example I assume you know that glucose syrup from wheat, caramel from wheat and dextrose...
  20. I too have a 12 year old coeliac daugter. It sounds like she could be allergic to something else besides gluten. There are allergy specialists in Australia and I would assume in NZ too. Skin conditions are not usually a reaction to gluten except in adults who can have dermatitis herpetiformus which resolves once on the diet. As far as cross contamination...
  21. If you haven't already done so I would recommend you join the Coeliac Society of Victoria. They will send you out heaps of information plus food samples. Also 4 times a year you get a magazine and Victorian Newsletter which has lots of places you can go for gluten-free food advertised. They will also send you out a list of safe take away food options and...
  22. The reason that she needs to be eating gluten is that otherwise the blood test will not be accurate and could give you a false negative. How long did they say that she needs to be eating gluten? Maybe being a child they might agree to less time - a couple of weeks perhaps. I understand how difficult it must be to convince her to eat gluten and know that...
  23. Good to hear of your positive gluten-free experience in Hawaii. We have thought about going to Hawaii but have also heard that the knowledge of celiac disease and availability of gluten-free food is not so good there which makes us think twice about going there.
  24. You need to be feeding her the equivalent of 2-4 slices of bread for 4 weeks for an accurate blood test. It doesn't have to be bread but just something high in gluten. I can understand your reluctance to do this and you need to discuss this further with your peadetrician. I work for the celiac society in Australia and that is what we tell people who...
  25. Go to a health food store and they should be able to help you or offer a suggestion of another gluten-free flour that is high in fibre.
