  1. We were in Singapore last year for a stop over with our daughter (aged 13) who is a celiac. We were there for 1 night on the way and 1 night on the way back form Europe. I agree with you that there is very little understanding of gluten free in Singapore. We went to the hotel restaurant and whilst the chef was very helpful he kept insisting that their...
  2. We were in Barcelona last September before a cruise so we were only there for 1 day before and 1 day after the cruise. Make sure you take your translation card as I did use it and it was useful. If you get desperate the Hard Rock Cafe has a gluten free menu. Otherwise there are options in restaurants such as tapas and some paella.
  3. Hi, Last September we went on a Mediterranean cruise on Royal Carribbean's Brilliance of the Seas. Our 13 year old daugther is a celiac and we were assured by Royal Carribbean that they cater for those on a gluten free diet. We had a great experience on the cruise. Our daughter was well and truly spoilt. The head chef came over and introduced himself...
  4. Hello, Thanks for your post - it is very informative. We are thinking about possibly going to Hawaii but the only thing putting us off is that we have heard that Hawaii is not very good with regards to awareness of celiac disease and gluten free options. We have a 13 year old daughter who is celiac and we have no problem travelling in Australia as awareness...
  5. I thought that japanese soy was called Tamari which is gluten free. Maybe you could ask them if they are using tamari or buy your own bottle of tamari or gluten free soy and take it with you. It must be very frustrating for you with the language barrier and lack of awareness.
  6. Firstly i would go and join the NSW Coeliac Society as they will give you all sorts of information and keep you updated with all sorts of info via their magazine. When you join you get a great start kit which includes handbook, recipe book, ingredients list book, heaps of other info and food samples plus a quarterly magazine and newsletter which is very...
  7. Hi Rose, Great to hear you had such a positive gluten free experience over here. The awareness of gluten free here has improved so much in the last 10 years. It is not difficult at all to find gluten free foods whether at the supermarket or in cafes, restaurants etc. Most pizza places now seem to offer gluten free pizza bases. There are several pizza...

    ARCHIVED Spain!

Are you in Spain? Have you been to Barcelona? If so, have you got any suggestions for restaurants there? We will be there in September.
  9. Thanks. I was going to post a similar article. It was on one of the news programs here tonight also. Another step on the road to developing an effective vaccine.
  10. I think you will be fine whether you chose to go to the UK or Australia. It probably depends on where you prefer to be. I haven't personally been to Townsville but I do know that the weather is warm all year round. It is a tropical part of Australia but it is an isolated town. Do not expect the sophistication of bigger cities such as Sydney or Melbourne...
  11. You will have no problem with finding gluten free foods in Melbourne. Melbourne is one of the best places in the world to be a celiac. The above post is very informative. If you have any specific questions please ask.
  12. [ Can you please me a bit more about the restaurants in Barcelona? Where are they located? Are they close to the tourist centre? Thank you.
  13. As Olivegirl says you can tell straight away if a product is gluten free just by reading the label. All allergy causing ingredients must be stated on label by law. There are 3 exceptions to this rule though. If you see glucose syrup (wheat), Dextrose (wheat) and caramel (wheat) they are GLUTEN FREE as they are so highly processed that there is no detectable...
  14. The best way to find out if a particular vitamin supplement is gluten free is to contact the manufacturer and ask them. Here in Australia vitamins etc. usually have on the label free from gluten, dairy, sugar etc. Gluten has to be declared on our food products here but not on medications and vitamins. Therefore if it is not on the label I either call the...
  15. Gluten cannot be abosrbed through the skin. It has to be ingested and enter your stomach and intestine for it to do any damage. Therefore the only costmetics you need to perhaps avoid is some lipsticks that contain wheat. Also shampoo with wheat that you may swallow.
  16. Hi, You should probably post this in the gluten free travel section to get more responses. We are also going to Barcelona in September before we go an a cruise. I have done a bit of research and here is a link to a blog which you may find useful. It also has links to Spanish Celiac society which has a list of restaurants in Barcelona. Open Original...
  17. As long as you wash the pan than cross contamination is not an issue. The only problem would be if there was gluten containing residue in the pan.
  18. Gluten free bread is available in Australia in all supermarkets. Gluten free food is found in the supermarket also in the health food section.
  19. One more thing. You must visit the Gluten Free Food Show which is on this year 3-4th October. There are hundreds of stands of gluten free food to sample, lots of information about gluten-free diet etc. You will see thousands of people just like you. The first year 10,000 visited in one day. Now it is on over 2 days so it is not so crowded and well worth...
  20. Hi, I am from Melbourne also and I would highly recommend that you join the Victorian Coeliac Society. They will offer you support when you nned it and plenty of information. THey recently held a 'generation Y' night which was a huge success. They had about 100 young people attend and listen to some guest speakers (athletes etc.) talk about how they...
  21. There is a travel agent here in Melbourne (Australia) that specialises in gluten free travel. Open Original Shared Link ALso there is a website for Europe called www.glutenfreeonthego.com.
  22. The brand SCHAR is a well known gluten free brand in Europe. I think it is German and it is really good. I have buoght some of their products here in Australia and they are expensive but excellent. Iknow there are many more gluten-free brands in Euorpe. Italy has a wide range available so if you go to Italy you should have plenty of choice. I don't...
  23. Very interesting trip report. Out of all the Asian countries I would expect Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia to be the easiest in terms of gluten free dining. I know that here we go to Thai restaurants a lot and basically all the curries are gluten free as they don't tend to use soy sauce. You should have visited Australia while you were in that neck...
  24. Glucose Syrup is fine for celiacs as it has no detectable gluten and is therefore gluten free. Even though glucose syrup is derived from wheat it has been processed so as to remove all the gluten from it. There should be no problem with you having gelati that has glucose syrup. If you go to the Italian Celiac society site they also have a list of gelataria...
  25. Well done in volunteering to do the trial. That's great that you had no side effects. I know it will take some years if it is successful but despite some negative comments on this topic the majority of celiacs would love be able to be free to eat whatever foods they choose. No-one is saying that a gluten free diet is not 'normal' but it is restrictive...
