ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)

Hi Nutralady Interesting about the glucose syrup for you. It should not make a difference unless you were really very sensitive. Maybe give it another try and see if you notice anything. Did you enjoy the concert -

There are many types of ice cream that are gluten free. You need to read the labels but I find that Bulla are usually fine as are many others. Yes, some do have glucose syrup from wheat but as there is no detectable gluten it should be no problem for you. The label must state if it has a allergy causing substance such as wheat on it. If it states that... -

Ciao and Welcome!! I am from Australia and we are thinking of going to Italy next year. Do you think it is easy to find gluten free food in Italy. Do restaurants understand what gluten free is? We have found a hotel in Cinque Terre that provides gluten free meals to its guests. Are certain regions of Italy better than others for finding gluten... -

Hi, enjoy your Tim Tams and Maltesers while you can as it sounds like you may indeed need to be on a gluten free diet. Don't worry it may seem a little daunting at first but you will soon get used to it even though it can be an inconvenience at times. Make sure if you do turn out to be a coeliac that you join up the Victorian Coeliac Society. It is well... -

Thanks Ken. It sounds like you are doing a good job in raising awareness over there. I have been to Oahu and Maui quite a few years ago but not the big island. If we did decide to go to Hawaii we would definately consider Kona island as it does sound like gluten free awareness is better there. That was funny about the waiter taking the flowers off the... -

I hope you enjoyed your time in Australia and had many delicious gluten free experiences. If you are still there and haven't visited Melbourne yet I can give you a list of some great places to eat. We even have gluten free hamburgers available in the city now. -

This has been an interesting thread. We were thinking of visiting Hawaii but I must admit it does put me off reading (on other threads mainly) about the lack of gluten free choices and awareness over there. I don't fancy eating out at the outback steakhouse every night or needing to call the restaurant and discuss menus beforehand. It is my daugther... -

Hi Lux, Welcome also this the forum. Why does your GI insist on you eating gluten again??? That is usually not done. It takes a while to get used to the gluten free diet and all that label reading. After a while do it becomes second nature and you don't take hours every time you go to the supermarket. Please feel free to ask any questions here as... -

Hi Neroli, Nice to see you on here. This thread has gone very quiet lately so welcome. The Freefrom cookes are pretty good aren't they. I find that with alot of gluten free biscuits etc. the picture on the box looks nothing like what is looks like when you open it. My daughter and I often have a laugh about it. Did you know that Orgran products... -

ESKAL have bought out gluten free ice cream cones which are available at Coles. These are cheaper than other brands that are available. Apparently they are bringing out waffles soon also. I haven't tried to the cones but will try and get hold of some and do a taste test. All their other products are good so they should be also. -
Here in Australia it is exactly as you describe in Canada. Somehow it has become a major shopping frenzy also with people lining up at 7.00am to get the best bargains. We had a beautiful sunny and warm day here of about 26 celsius so the last think I wanted to do was battle the crowds at the shops.

For those who live in Melbourne you can get gluten free Hamburgers in the city. At Flinders Street Station and at the corner of Elizabeth and Flinders street is a small place called lord of the Fries (yes, strange name). They do gluten free fries with various different sauces and gluten free hamburgers. One of the owners is a coeliac. Handy if you... -

Hi, As far as gluten free food goes Australia is an excellent place to travel but I can't vouch for some of the smaller towns that you may visit on your trip. One thing about Australia is that the labelling laws are very strict which means that if a product has an allergy causing ingredient such as wheat, gluten , soy etc. it must be on the label. This... -
I would take your son to a pediactric gastroenterologist. He is not too young to do a gastroscopy. My daughter had one at age 2. This is the only way to confirm whether he is a coeliac. You don't want him to have to go on a lifelong gluten free diet if there is no need to. If you have already started him on the diet you may need to give him wheat again...

Did anyone go to the Gluten Free Expo in Melbourne last weekend? I actually volunteer for the Victorian Coeliac Society so I was working at their stand. The expo was excellent with about 150 stands of gluten free food and lots and lots of samples to try. It was much better than last year as it was over two days and not as crowded. They had 13,00... -
Ciao Matteo and thank you all your useful information. I first have to say that your English is much, much better than my Italian. I can understand what you have written in Italian but not completely. I will get my Mum to translate for me to make sure I understand. I will go and look at the Italian Coeliac Society website. I have one of their magazines...

Ciao Matteo, I have been to Italy three times and I would love to visit again with my family. I have 2 kids aged 10 and 6 and my 10 year old is a celiac. My mother and father are Italian (from Gorizia and Lipari) but I was born in Australia. My Italian is not that good but I can understand it quite well. Your English is good and you write...

AUSTRALIA is very good and perhaps I am being a little biased as I live here but you can get gluten free products at every supermarket. There is usually a gluten free section where you can buy pasta, cookies, gluten-free flour, pancake mix, cereals etc. etc. Also there is good understanding in most restaurants and cafes and many now have gluten free options... -

Patties are trying to get their product into Safeway/Woolworths also and expand their range. The problem at the moment is that the products are too popular and they can't keep up with demand. That is great to hear as it means that larger companies such as Pattie's are realising that gluten free is popular and can be very successful for them. -

That's an excellent site. I discovered it recently too and the gluten free section is good as are all the other sections. There are many recipies that can be adapted to gluten free. There is a chicken and vegetable soup that is on that site that I made and it was delicious. -
Hi Lexis, Have a wonderful trip and don't forget to come back and let us all know how you manged over there with food. Don't worry as I have heard good reports about Italy and I am sure that you won't starve. You can always eat plenty of gelati.

Ciao Quasar, I have read your posts and it is very interesting to hear from someone in Italy. I too am from Australia (Melbourne) and I have a daughter who is 10 years old and a celiac. We are thinking of going to Italy sometime but I am concerned about the food of course for my daughter. I have hearda that in Italy there is good awareness of celiac...

If a product says gluten free then it overrides any ingredients that you may think have gluten. I also wondered about the Fountain Soy Sauce but it is definately gluten Free. This question came up at the coeliac conference in Melbourne last month and Sue Shephard the dietician confirmed that fountain soy sauce is in fact gluten free. I have the product... -

My daughter gave the Freedom Foods lasagna the thumbs down. The donuts go the thumbs up and the fish bites she quite liked. Patties make the best pies I think and they are cheaper than Freedom. They should be in Coles stores now and some IGA's also. Patties are using recipes from Uncle Rick's which were excellent. They have joined forces with Uncle...
