ARCHIVED Better Batter
kitgordon posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Anyone who relies on Better Batter products, think about ordering now. The company is facing possible bankrupcy, so now is the time to stock up. Or enough orders may pay the bills and keep them afloat - I am hoping, as I haven't found any cup for cup flour or cake mixes that even come close! -
ARCHIVED After Celiac Diagnoses - Were You Angry?
kitgordon replied to tonalynn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It helps to take Lactaid tablets when you have dairy the first few months and buy Lactaid milk if you use milk. I wasn't giving up my dairy, either! -
ARCHIVED Wonderful Trip To Sandals Royal Bahamian
kitgordon posted a topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
My husband and I celebrated our 30th anniversary in the Bahamas, and the all the resort restaurants took great care of me, sending chefs to talk to us, getting gluten free bread for me, pancakes in the morning, even Glutino crackers with the cheese plate they sent to our room. The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful, and I would highly recommend Sandals... -
ARCHIVED Thyroid Medication? Levoxyl Discontinued

Lannett brand generic levothyroxine is gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Guessed Completely Wrong...
kitgordon replied to kitgordon's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Thanks, yes it was rather awful - but also a relief in a sense because there is an obvious (though expensive and annoying) cure for bedbugs. Clean everything out of your bedroom, vacuum thoroughly, run all clothes through a hot wash and dry, send curtains to the dry cleaner, throw away dust ruffle and bedspread, encase the mattress, have the exterminators... -
I spent the entire fall and early winter trying to cure what I thought was DH. Tried low iodine, went crazy trying to locate hidden gluten in my life... turns out the "rash" was bedbug bites! Just sharing this because they are apparently epidemic, and the bites really looked and felt much like all the descriptions of DH that I have read, so if anyone thinks...

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Tried Better Batter Pancake Mix?
kitgordon posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I wondered how the Better Batter compares to Gluten Free Bisquick. I love Better Batter flour and cake and brownie mixes. -
ARCHIVED Safe Sandwich "bread" Substitute?

Schar makes good breads, too. -
ARCHIVED Do You Get Crazy When Glutened?
kitgordon replied to troykm's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think about suicide when I am glutened - not with any actual intent, but the thoughts come almost like they are being sent in by someone else. Very weird. -
There are a lot of gluten-free options for cooking. Progresso's boxed broths are gluten free, and so are most of the HerbOx boullions. The first Christmas was HARD. If you start experimenting now, you may be able to come up with replacement recipes by then. It is great you are a good cook; people who don't like to cook find the adjustment much harder. There...

Welcome aboard! It is overwhelming at first, but very doable, and you have definitely found the right place for support and advice! -
Anyone Have Steatorrhoea?
kitgordon replied to Macmuireadhaigh's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This was my primary symptom, and its recurrence is how I know when I have been accidentally glutened. -
Looks very familiar. 3 years?! I am so sorry, and hope it clears up soon. I've had it 3 months and going crazy with it.

I'm so sorry. DH is truly miserable. I get too many adverse reactions to prescriptions to try steroids or dapsone, so I don't know what to suggest about that. Benadryl or Zyrtec will help a little with the itch, but it's nothing like total relief. I am trying the low-iodine diet, but not far enough into it to know if it will help. Hope you get relief soon...

ARCHIVED Iodine And Levothyroxine
kitgordon replied to kitgordon's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Thanks for the responses. I am very strict about gluten free eating. I know non-iodized salt isn't a LI diet; I just did that as a first step, hoping it might be enough. It wasn't. I did read the thyca.org info a few weeks ago and it scared me, but I am getting ready to try it. Desperate and miserable. I hope two weeks or so will do it for me, too. -
Still scratching DH after being glutened in August I did switch to plain, not-iodized salt, but no real help there. Now I read that my thyroid meds are made of, or with, iodine. Maybe that explains why I have DH now when I never did before. My symptoms were always GI, but I started with the levothyrox this spring, and I guess this has been my first glutening...

I like Udi's crusts, and my gluten-eating family like them too.

ARCHIVED How Long After Glutening?
kitgordon replied to kitgordon's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Thank you for the suggestions and well-wishes . I did get a benzocaine cream, and it is more helpful than the hydrocortisone I had been using. I also am switching to non-iodized salt, to see if that helps. I hope I don't need to go as far as the low iodine diet; it looks awfully restrictive (as if gluten free isn't tough enough, right?). I am normally very... -
I got glutened by some sweetened nuts at a friend's house (didn't look at the label - duh! smacks self in head!) nearly 3 weeks ago. Next day started with my usual GI symptoms, then a few days later I started getting what I thought were mosquito bites on my feet, but as new ones kept arriving around my elbows and knees and on my hands, I realized it is probably...

Thanks; that is good to know. I'll keep a lookout for it. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Bisquick
kitgordon replied to Medcoder03's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I actually like the waffles much better than the pancakes - but I used to make my own fluffy buttermilk pancakes from scratch and haven't found anything that comes close And my family loves the "impossibly easy" pies. -
ARCHIVED Bob's Red Mill All Purpose Flour
kitgordon replied to Mateto's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think some people are more sensitive to the bean taste than others. I personally hate it, but some people don't seem to notice it at all. I really like Better Batter flour; so far it has worked in everything I have tried - but it is expensive and you have to order it online. -
ARCHIVED Cookbooks
kitgordon replied to Razzle Dazzle Brazell's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I like The Gluten Free Kitchen and You Won't Believe It's Gluten Free by Roben Ryberg and The Cake Doctor Bakes Gluten Free by Anne Byrn. If you spring for a really good gluten-free flour (I like Better Batter), it's true many recipes can be successfully converted. -
ARCHIVED Best Bread Recipe
kitgordon replied to DonnaMarie7's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
If you want to try a mix, Gluten Free Pantry Favorite Sandwich Bread mix is wonderful. My 21 year old daughter (who is NOT gluten free) loves it so much I hide it or she'll eat the whole loaf on me! For store bought, I think Udi's is closest to the real thing.
