  1. I'm so sorry you are feeling so down about having celiac disease. My daughter and I both were diagnosed in the last year and there are times when I feel really guilty for having passed it on to her..... Eating out is definitely not as pleasurable as it used to be but we're figuring out what restaurants are OK. Doesn't your Olive Garden have a gluten-free...
  2. Let's see, my daughter's a lot more picky about gluten-free alternatives than I am but we both agree: Any store bought bread except Udi's is like eating cardboard (buy either Pamela's mix or frozen Udi's) Every mac n' cheese boxed mix we've tried (using quinoa noodles and a pkg of the Kraft cheese sauce works OK) most nutrition bars..... Favorites...
  3. I am not diabetic but my older sister is so I recognize the symptoms of low blood sugar. I've had some episodes in the past (shaking, sweating, etc.) that passed pretty quickly, not sure what those were about but I've had testing done during all 3 of my pregnancies, never developed gestational diabetes, etc. What I'm noticing, 4 mos. into my diagnosis...
  4. I am so sorry for your loss In my own personal experience, having just found out 4 mos. ago that I have celiac disease after a lifetime of a "tempermental" stomach, it seems to fit my family history of preterm labor. My mother had my sister 5 weeks early, was on something for preterm labor with me and ended up dying, undiagnosed, of a celiac-related...
  5. I get emails from a Celiac group in my area and this brand is advertised quite frequently for their flour mix, cookie baking mix, graham-type flour, etc. Has anyone tried it?
  6. After my daughter's positive biopsy, our pediatrician/gastro recommended the rest of the family be tested but said that since Kelly's biopsy was positive, a positive blood test for the rest of us was sufficient, no biopsy needed. After my positive blood test, I went to see an adult gastro. and after going through my family history, he recommended one so...
  7. My now 14 yr. old daughter was diagnosed 10 mos. ago and I was diagnosed 4 mos. ago. It's almost easier now that I have the same diet as her, she doesn't feel so alone anymore It is amazing how many places you can find gluten but you'll get good at recognizing the different names for gluten and start to know the good brands in your stores. We use...
  8. Eating smaller meals every couple hours is healthier for you, I think. I typically eat breakfast around 6 am and then am starving by 9:30 when I'm at work. I've noticed on weekends I'm busy doing yardwork or whatever and don't get as hungry and sometimes can go until lunchtime. Not sure if being distracted helps? I agree that you probably need to add...
  9. [Don't know if anyone else here has WinCo near them but in their bulk section, they carry a rice krispy treat individually wrapped. I've read the ingredients and except for possible cross contamination, they appear OK?
  10. My daughter was diagnosed in Sept. and me in February. She's 14 and of course loves fast food but we're still figuring out what we can have and can't have. We knew we could have In n' Out fries because they don't fry anything else and used to eat Del Tacos but now they are serving chicken fingers..... Rats! I've seen some debate on whether McDonald's fries...
  11. I feel for you. My daughter (14) has been gluten-free since this last Sept. The Dr. said it would take about 6 mos. for her to heal but she still had stomach aches every time she ate....... she did gain weight, skin color looked better, had some periods of time where she felt better but we had a week where she just felt terrible so took her back. This...
  12. How cool. I remember being sad thinking my daughter would never get to go to "high tea" again...... or when she goes to a sleepover and they have pizza for dinner and donuts for breakfast.... She's still resistant to taking her own food, although I try and I don't think the other parents would mind helping her pop a gluten free pizza in the oven..... Hopefully...
  13. Could be. My daughter was diagnosed with eczema at 3 wks of age but didn't get diagnosed with celiac disease until she was 13. Her eczema/dandruff she's battled all her life is going away! My youngest daughter also gets bumpy, red spots around her mouth. Spectrazol, I think it's called helps get rid of it.
  14. Hi Lily, It can be so challenging feeding these kids, huh!? My daughter and I were diagnosed with celiac disease around the same time. I have an easier time accepting my food limitations. She's definitely pickier when gluten-free foods don't taste "the same." She wasn't feeling that much better so we went back to the gastro doctor and he says she also...
  15. Luckily, my hubby is very supportive and likes to do research online so he found the best baking mix and bread mix-Pamela's!! The pancakes are really good, the whole family eats them and we made some fantastic Belgian waffles too. The bread is good, takes about 3 hours in the bread machine. The chocolate chip and gingershap cookies are good! I recently...
  16. My 14 yr. old daughter and I both have celiac disease and I stay on the diet for several reasons. 1. My mom died of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma which originated in her intestines-she probably had celiac disease and died at 56. I really don't want to die a horrific death like she did!! I want to be healthy and be around for my kids and family. 2. I am...
  17. Haven't finished our day yet but so far today: breakfast-gluten-free chocolate buckwheat cake (leftovers!!) and tea Lunch-fresh gluten-free bread still warm from the bread machine w/ turkey, spinach and lettuce, potato salad dinner-Beef Wellington, green salad, baked potatoes
