ARCHIVED Motts Fruitsations Apple Sauce
Cheryl-C posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have some Motts Fruitsations applesauce in my fridge - regular flavour and pear flavour. I checked the ingredients and nothing jumped out at me at the store, though now I'm wonder about the "natural flavourings." I went to the website but they did not have the pear flavour listed. I noticed they made it clear their products are dairy and nut free, but I... -
ARCHIVED Modified Corn Starch

No, I live in Canada. I wonder if I check a larger grocery store if they would have it. There are also some health food stores in my neighbourhood as well. -
ARCHIVED Modified Corn Starch
Cheryl-C replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks everyone for the input. I've never seen Stonyfield brand yogurt (maybe it's an American product?) but I've seen Yoplait. I know I had trouble in the past with the mueslix ones before going gluten-free, but I was curious about the peach and strawberry flavours. -
So I've been gluten-free for 8 weeks, and yesterday I got glutened. Ugh. I was supposed to go out tonight to the bar with my boyfriend and a friend, and I had to pass because my stomach is still feeling iffy and I'm still a little out of sorts. I feel so BAD though, that's actually the worst thing. It's just the bar, and my boyfriend is so supportive...

ARCHIVED Modified Corn Starch
Cheryl-C posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've been reading some conflicting information regarding modified corn starch... I was going to eat some activia yogurt, but I see it has both corn starch and modified corn starch on the label. Is this ok? Here is the whole ingredient list: Skim milk Concentrated skim milk, Strawberries, Sugar Fructose, Corn starch, Milk protein concentrate, Cream... -
I'm currently experience my first real glutening since going gluten-free. For me, my symptoms seemed to start about 30, 45 minutes after eating the food. I was suddenly cramped and gassy, and ended up with one instance of really bad D. (graphic, I know, sorry lol) The remainder of the evening and night last night I had really bad pain in my stomach,...

ARCHIVED Label Question
Cheryl-C replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for the information, much appreciated. My biggest beef with organic foods is how much they cost. I'm not married (so one income only) and I don't quite work full-time hours. Therefore, not exactly rolling in money. I know that a lot of people swear by organic food because they're supposed to be a purer product (and I like eating things I can... -
Oh no! That really sucks I'm sorry you had such a terrible reaction. I'm so disappointed, because I've never had a problem and it's so tasty. Did you call them and yell at them?

I feel your pain, completely. It's frustrating when you go to the trouble to make sure everyone understands you have serious restrictions, and you get glutened anyway. I swear it's like they think we're just fussy, or on a fad diet. Eating out is terrifying. I got glutened today too, and am suffering for it. I'm supposed to go out for dinner on Sunday to...

For my fellow GTA-residents: if you aren't familiar with Yoshi's Sweets and Wild Earth bakeries, you might want to check them out. They are both located on Queen E between Vic Park and Glen Manor. I bought a loaf of white bean flour bread from Yoshi's Sweets. It's surprisingly light and has a nice flavour to it. I also bought some cookies and cupcakes...

So I had lunch out with a friend today...always a gamble, I know. I decided to call Casey's after hearing on another site that they are gluten-friendly. Big. Fat. Lie. I called them and spoke to a hostess who told me they are able/willing to accommodate for gluten-free diets, and have "lots of options" to choose from. Yeah... I got the the restaurant...

Thanks Peter! What a relief!

So after checking the Swiss Chalet website, I found their chalet sauce listed as gluten-free. However, I just came across a comment on a website that claims that chalet sauce is "full of gluten." So I'm a little conflicted now and I'd love some input.

While at a restaurant today (Eggsmart), my bf and I got talking to one of the cooks. Upon hearing of my gluten-free requirements, he recommended a restaurant on the Danforth called "Magic Oven." I pulled up their menu and there are certainly a lot of interesting items, though I didn't see anything listed as gluten-free, other than a mention that they offer...

Ick. Why advertise gluten-free if they're going to do it that way? Interesting...I didn't react, like I said (I've had it 3 times now) but I may not be as sensitive to cc as others. Do you mind if I ask which area of the GTA you're in? I'm in Scarborough, so I use the Pizza Nova on Lawrence @ Birchmount.

ARCHIVED Label Question
Cheryl-C posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi folks, I did my first "big grocery shopping" since going gluten-free...that was fun, took me probably twice as long due to all the reading and blackberry googling. Anyway, I just had a couple of questions: Lechtins - I might not be spelling that correctly. I keep seeing "soy lechtins" and then also "lechtins"...what is this? Is this something... -
ARCHIVED Are These Products Ok?
Cheryl-C replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
One more idea based on something I read a while ago (feel free to chime in if you disagree, folks!)...apparently, because the gluten-free diet is lower in fiber than the "regular" diet, bloating and constipation can be more common for gluten-free eaters. I know you didn't mention constipation, but since you mentioned bloating, just thought I'd throw that... -

ARCHIVED Question Regarding Sensitivity

Well go figure! LOL *awesome* No wonder everyone around here is so careful. I guess I'd better start being more careful too. Thanks for the input! -
ARCHIVED Some Favourites...
Cheryl-C posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I bought some favourite snack foods today while at the drug store. I checked the labels and everything looked ok. I bought: a family-size bag of Werther's Originals, a bag of Kerr's Chocolate Mints, 2 mint chocolate Aero bars and a tin of salted, roasted, whole cashews by Star snacks. I found a thread from 2004 on here talking about Werther's Original... -
ARCHIVED Question Regarding Sensitivity
Cheryl-C posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So aside from a few slip-ups here and there, I've been doing gluten-free for roughly four, maybe five weeks. I've been noticing lately that when I accidentally stumble into some gluten, the response is a lot worse than it was before I went gluten-free. For example: Last night, without thinking, I ate some of my favourite candy. Also last night, I got a... -
The Pizza Nova pizza was quite good. If you go on the website and click on the "allergy information" link, it'll give you a list of everything they have, even individual pizza topping ingredients, and will show you which ones have gluten, which are gluten-free but processed in a gluten environment, which ones are totally gluten-free, etc. We had the pizza...

Haha wow, I guess it really is a small world! Remezzo is great, and I'm happy to still be able to have their oil-sauce pasta by subbing in the corn pasta. Next time you're in the neighbourhood, check it out! It was pretty good, and the leftovers heated up really well the next day, too - always a bonus for me, since I can never finish anything in a...

ARCHIVED Sun-Rype Fruit Source

Ugh, I guess that's probably what it was. I definitely got into something today, so I suppose the fruit bar was a good guess. Thanks! -
ARCHIVED Sun-Rype Fruit Source
Cheryl-C posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi, I recently (mistakenly) bought a box of Sun-Rype Fruit Source bars. I checked the ingredients before eating it, and I didn't think anything looked gluten-y... but now I'm starting to get sinus pain, right after eating it. Anyone else have a reaction to these? As an aside, Sun-Rype Fruit-to-Go doesn't usually bother me at all.
