ARCHIVED Dairy
Cheryl-C replied to Mama Melissa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I eat dairy all the time, since as long as I don't go really overboard, it doesn't give me problems. The only time I really feel like I have a dairy issue is if I try to drink a glass of milk - then I don't feel so good. But cheese, yogurt, ice cream, frozen yogurt, chocolate ... yum. So no, not everyone here is dairy free. -
The gluten-free-status of Chex has been beaten to death on this board, I know. Forgive me! Has anyone reacted to only one kind of Chex? I've been eating Honey Chex and Corn Chex with no problems at all. The last three days I've been eating Rice Chex, and I think I've finally figured out that that's maybe what's been making me sick. A bit nauseous,...

Good ideas, thank you. I guess putting a "fun experience" spin on it might be better than "leave your poisonous bread at the door, mainstreamers!"

Hi everyone, This weekend we are having a Christmas open house at my place. Aside from a baby shower in September, this is the first party I've had since going gluten-free. Normally, our friends and family bring plates to share; it is not requested, but it's generally what happens. Anyway, I'm looking for a way to say "Please don't bring anything...

ARCHIVED At Least They're Making The Effort
Cheryl-C replied to srfjeld's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Oh no! Sorry to hear about the DH - hopefully you're feeling better soon. I agree, it seems a lot of restaurants/bakeries/cafes are making the effort now, they just haven't got the idea 100%. They provide the food, without realizing the food needs the correct environment. I'm glad you pointed it out - hopefully they will take it to heart. -
As with Patti, I find a couple of days is ok. It depends on your symptoms. For me, I get the stomach cramps and D for about a day, plus fatigue and really bad ear pain. I find I do well to drink lots and lots of water, black decafe tea, and carb load to help with the D. I've also learned, the hard way, to stay away from dairy for those couple of days...

ARCHIVED Progresso Soup
Cheryl-C replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Is that only in the US, or are they gluten-free in Canada as well? -
ARCHIVED Hamburger Bun Emergency!
Cheryl-C replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Update: My Mom ended up going to the Pickering flea market and getting gluten-free egg buns from Molly B's. They were fresh, really tasty, and absolutely tasted like "normal bread." I've also got part of their egg bread (loaf) and have been enjoying it in the mornings with butter, under the broiler. Mmmm... Thank you to everyone for your ideas. Rest... -
ARCHIVED Immature Perhaps But Its Working
Cheryl-C replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
All very, very excellent points. Praising a restaurant for a good job will only ensure continued good service. I follow this practice as well. Harrassing restaurants, lying about illnesses just to get a point across is counter-productive and, as I've said, unethical. How can a manager monitor their restaurant's progress, and identify *actual* problems... -
ARCHIVED Immature Perhaps But Its Working
Cheryl-C replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I would agree, Julie and Lisa. Yes, it would be nice if we could eat out and never run into any trouble, but at the end of the day, you are at the mercy of the kitchen/waitstaff, who are humans. Humans lead to human errors. Just like a non-celiac might get food poisoning, or indigestion, or anything else - the risk is always there. Also, I have to say... -
ARCHIVED Butterball Turkey
Cheryl-C replied to MelindaLee's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This applies to their turkey bacon, right? *fingers crossed* -
So Friday night, I was at Pizza Nova with my friend. I get their delivery all the time, and I've never had them gluten me or cc me or anything. I felt very safe and confident. We sat down, and our server came over. Right off the bat I explained everything to her (gluten intolerance, wheat allergy) and we asked that no gluten/wheat products be brought...

Are restaurants required (by-law, or something) to have allergen information available upon request? I went out with a friend for dinner on Friday night. We went to Pizza Nova (eat-in), because I get their delivery all the time and have never, ever had issues. When we got there, we started discussing the pizza toppings, and I realized my "usual" wasn...

ARCHIVED Immature Perhaps But Its Working
Cheryl-C replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
If I get glutened in a restaurant, or a waitstaff says/does something that tells me they aren't 100% informed, I make a point of calling the restaurant and speaking to the manager. They need to know if their staff are following their training or not. However, I wouldn't claim violent illness simply for sub-par service. -
ARCHIVED Recommendation For Bread Machine
Cheryl-C replied to Loey's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm looking into a bread machine too. Canadian Tire has a Black & Decker one on sale, and it has a gluten-free setting on it. Anyone have any experience with this one? -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Canned Soup?
Cheryl-C replied to angel42's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
For those in Canada, here is a link to a list of Campbell's gluten-free soups, from the Campbell's Canada website. My apologies to our American friends; I can't verify if they are the same or different in the US. Open Original Shared Link Enjoy! You'll be glad to see there are more than a few things to choose from. -
ARCHIVED Hamburger Bun Emergency!

ARCHIVED Hamburger Bun Emergency!
Cheryl-C posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ok, so this weekend we are doing my brother's birthday dinner. I'm the only one gluten-free, but everyone is willing to suck it up now and then for a "family dinner," which is awesome. Anyway, until today, the plan had been gluten-free shepard's pie, which I was totally looking forward to and getting excited about. My brother has now decided he wants... -
Thanks Peter. I guess Drs are figuring out this stuff, too. To clarify, when you say to drain and wash a second time, do you mean all the dishes, or just the one plate/fork that was involved with the gluten food?
-
Really? That's so weird then that the Dr would recommend it I use bleach/cleaning wipes on the counters and stuff anyway (good for disinfecting, as you said) but I was also under the impression it would remove the cc from gluten. So then, what other steps can I take? Does soap and water do it? Something else??

ARCHIVED Are You A Celiac?
Cheryl-C replied to Lisa's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I tested negative for the Celiac blood test, though because my Dr didn't tell me not to stop eating gluten until after the blood test, I'll never know if it's because I truly don't have it, or because of the botched blood work. In any case, I know that eating gluten makes me very, very ill, and in addition, exposure to certain grains causes respiratory and... -
Just to add - my BF and I don't live together, but he is here often and will sometimes eat something with gluten. I don't have a dishwasher, so this is what I do: I wash all my dishes (or all gluten-free dishes) first, and wash his second. When I'm done washing his, I put a capful, or two, of bleach in the sink and fill it up with the hottest water I can...

I don't recall seeing any Orange Julius, so I can't say, sorry. Peter - does that mean that The Keg in Toronto also offers gluten-free menus? I haven't been to The Keg in Toronto since going gluten-free, so I wasn't aware. Too bad about The Outback - the more gluten-free-friendly restaurants, the better! Have you checked out Remezzo's pasta yet?
-
Bummer! That's only Starbucks product I liked Thanks for the info though.

ARCHIVED Banana Bread Recipe
Cheryl-C replied to sunnyday13's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
This recipe sounds great! I love banana bread! About the cornstarch - is that 1/2 a cup? tablespoon? teaspoon?
