  1. So you have trouble with some grains too? I have to say, before she said it it'd never occurred to me that this might be the problem. I've read of "wheat allergy" and "corn allergy" before but in my mind, I always assumed that mean anaphylactic or hives or something. I never associated the ear pain with an allergy. The body is so bizarre. I'll look around...
  2. K-Dawg, you're exactly right, and that is what my doctor said as well. If eating gluten-free has sorted out my stomach issues (yes) then clearly there was some kind of issue with digestion. The smart thing to do here will be to stay away from it. As far as the symptoms go, when I told her that besides the digestion issues, I get sudden, severe ear pain...
  3. So today I had my post-blood-test follow-up with the doctor. My blood test apparently came back fine, as in negative for celiac - she did mention the high rate of false negatives. However, the more we talked, the more the doctor is thinking I may have a GRAIN allergy. What?! Apparently eating gluten-free has kept me (mostly) out of harm's way, but my...
  4. Thanks everyone for the advice. Because I'm still new to this, I'm finding myself caught off-guard about ALL the things I have to consider. I was so mad at this party! My (lovely, yet quite elderly and not-quite-getting it) aunt *insisted* on bringing a chocolate cake since it was a birthday party. Never mind that I was one of the people celebrating...
  5. Agree, agree, one hundred times over with everything stated here. When something becomes a "fad," the safety of it goes out the window. There's a difference between someone saying "I don't want the bun on my burger, I'm cutting out carbs" and someone saying, "I don't want the bun on my burger, because you might cc it and I'll be sick all over your lovely...
  6. It's weird...they're supposed to be safe, but they aren't made in a dedicated factory (according to what I found online, anyway) so I guess there's always a chance of cc that way. It's never happened to me before with tostitos, though this was the first time ever eating the blue ones. So weird. I guess something else to cross off the list.
  7. Thank you both for the input. I'm still really new to all of this, and every time something seems different, I get confused. I guess I should be focusing less on the order of the symptoms and more on the symptoms themselves.
  8. I got glutened last night, and I think it was from the blue corn restaurant-style tostitos I had. I'd never had them before, and today after my symptoms started to settle down, I had some because I was hungry - about 10 minutes later, my ears started burning again, my stomach cramped up a bit and I had a little trouble catching my breath. My question...
  9. So I got glutened last night. Boo. The last time I got glutened, it started with D and stomach cramps, and then the sinus migraine/ear pain followed by the headache and generally-low energy and moodiness. Last night, it started with the ear pain first, then the headache and energy/mood issues, and then a sore stomach with no D. What gives? Is it normal...
  10. So last night we had a family get-together at my place. Because we usually do pot-luck style, I made sure to call people over the last week, go over EXACTLY what they were bringing, all the ingredients, how they would need to process it (to reduce the risk of cc in their kitchen) and everything. Somewhere, somehow, something got me. I still don't know what...
  11. I'm by no means an expert here, but I'll throw in my two cents anyway. What you're experiencing may not be related to allergies/intolerances at all. Have you talked with your doctor about having a colonoscopy? There could be something else, unrelated, going on in your bowel that should be looked after. Hope you feel better soon!
  12. So a while back I sent an email to Mott's because I like their products but wanted to make sure their applesauces were gluten-free. Their email was very polite, but there was one paragraph that confused me: "Gluten is a mixture of complex proteins found in the grain of wheat, barley, oats, rye, rice, corn, and other grains. All of our Mott
  13. I know it doesn't solve the problem, but isn't it nice to know you're not the only one? I swear, sometimes with what goes on in my body, I start to feel like I'm losing my mind. Hot/inflamed guts is a really good way to put it. I had to go out yesterday right after I posted my message - still feel off after the healthy BM. I took a gingerale with me to...
  14. Pink Zebra, thanks for the input. I don't eat a lot of spicy or acidic foods but I am a dairy junkie. There was Swiss cheese (a real favourite) on the sandwich I had today, so maybe that's why? I really don't want to have to give up dairy ... I guess cutting back in the meantime might not be a bad idea. I've got a pizza dinner already planned/paid for tonight...
  15. Hey all, Like so many of my other threads, this too is BM-related. My apologies, but my gluten issues have so much to do with GI stuff Anyway - since going gluten-free I've gone from having constipation/D (usually one, then the other, then back, constantly) to being what I would consider pretty darn regular. This is good news! I eat, shortly after...
  16. Thank you Skylark! I love this place, you guys are so WISE and helpful for us greenhorns
  17. Wow Bob, that sounds really awful. REALLY awful. I feel really bad for you. My response to a glutening is not like yours, so I can't be of much help. I will add though that my cousin vomits loads after coming into contact with gluten, and they told her that was more of an "anaphylactic-style" response than the typical GI-response. What does your GP say? Throwing...
  18. So I went to use my clubhouse pasta salad mix to grill up some veggies, and I realized I hadn't used it since going gluten-free. Of course, my former gluteny-self never cared about ingredients, so the part of the package I'd ripped off contained the ingredients list. I tried to go to the website but I can't seem to load it Can anyone help me out here? Is...
  19. NorthernElf, thanks for the ideas! Getting glutened while traveling is definitely a big concern! I'm going with my boyfriend, his bro&gluten-free, sister&gluten-free, so I definitely want my insides to be on their best behaviours. Did you find that most places new about gluten-free already, or did you have to go through everything item-by-item...
  20. *This is a bit rambly, sorry* I've been gluten-free for a while now, and while I'm still working out a few kinks, I have to say overall I feel a lot better. Yes! One issue that remains, unfortunately, is a bowel issue. Before going gluten-free I swung back and forth between D and constipation. I wouldn't go for two, three, four days, and then WHAM...
  21. Peter, thank you for clearing this up. I was so confused and really missing mustard Is mustard seed, in its natural state (not ground) also gluten-free?
  22. That's great! It's good to hear you're feeling so good. Keep it up
  23. PS about the Gas-X...I assume they are gluten-free, right? Don't want to cause myself MORE problems!
  24. Thank you both for the advice. I've been pushing the water like never before (not usually a big water drinker) and it seems to be helping a bit ... though I'm making more midnight loo trips than my 90-year-old auntie! I've been eating a yogurt each morning the last three days in an attempt to get my bowels moving again, and it seems to be helping though...
  25. Just as an aside, when you begin going gluten-free, you are making a dramatic change in your diet. Even though your body rejects gluten, in a way it was "used to" it being there. Now you've removed in entirely, suddenly; your body might be in a bit of a shock. Think of it like going cold-turkey on nicotine, alcohol or narcotics - even if it's harmful...
