  1. I was the opposite of overweight and anemic. I was underweight and by the time I would have developed anemia I probably would be knocking on death's door. In the past 2 years I'd put on about 15-20 lbs, putting me in the "healthy" weight range (even though I felt worse than ever!). I didn't eat that much, and I worked a job where I was on my feet all day...
  2. 1. Is it absolutely necessary to continue eating gluten until I can be tested? If you're going to get the testing, yes. Some people just decide to go gluten-free without the tests, but if you start the diet before you get tested, you're more likely to get a false negative. 2. I have severe GERD (saw that many of you do too), could these be related? In...
  3. Found out about this place through the St. Petersburg Times. It's a little cafe in Dunedin, FL and it's exclusively gluten-free. They only serve breakfast and lunch, except on Friday, and the menu is small (and for the multiple-intolerance'd a tad problematic), but it's yummy. My friend was blown away by the buffalo chicken wrap and she wanted to call...
  4. All right, well I'll definitely try to get me some grass-fed, organic good meat... when I get paid. I'm now going on 3 months, so still somewhat in the beginning stages. It's a pretty consistent reaction though. o.O I go for the easy-to-cook meat because I never feel like bothering with anything requiring extensive preparation or cooking. I also make piddly...
  5. This is a little rambly and disjointed (and self-pitying too, as an added bonus!). I've noticed that EVERY SINGLE TIME I eat some kind of meat, I turn into this crazy, moody mess a couple hours later. It's happened with bacon (cooked in a pan or microwaved on a plate), it's happened with cubed steaks, it's happened with chicken cooked in a glass dish...
  6. Unfortunately black pants are part of the dress code. I've seen (non-skinny!) coworkers wear (and get away with) leggings though they're not technically allowed; those usually feel semi-OK. Amen to that! I remember praying for earthly beings who understood me years ago, and hey, look. (I'm godless now, but shhhhh). I'm due for my period...
  7. My belly feels HORRIBLE. Like, anything touching it, just feels... gross. I can't explain it any other way. I'm wearing a blanket and I have my legs raised up so the blanket won't touch my belly. It doesn't hurt it just feels SO GROSS!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've always had this issue, but normally it just meant wearing any kind of pants was a problem (but occasionally...
  8. This was my experience. I'M JUST A STUPID LITTLE GIRL WHO DOESN'T KNOW BETTER!!!!!!!! By the time I suspected Celiac, I had two issues: The anxiety from hell, and the fiery hatred of a trillion suns for being dismissed. Oh, and fatigue didn't help. This meant that having to look for and deal with another doctor was an absolutely terrifying thing for...
  9. My acne is better too! My face is super clear (for me) right now! I feel some pimples coming on, but I think they'll be small and few. I'm having period changes, but I don't know yet what they mean (this month my cramps were light and in my back, like they *used* to be; in recent months I had them in my belly and sometimes they'd be pretty bad). My...
  10. Happy New Year everyone! So, I just wanted to start a thread about the little symptoms. The ones that may annoy you but are far from debilitating, and maybe you didn't realize it wasn't just a quirk of your body till it went away. It may never have occurred to you that gluten was doing it, and you may not ever see it on a Celiac symptom list. For...
  11. It's been a month and a half and it's hard for me because I am still learning how to cook and even how to eat. I live with gluten-eaters which makes life a little harder. I have a feeling I'm being CC'd by stuff, and I'm learning how to deal with that still. I have a lot of ups and downs which impacts my desire to cook, which I have to do so much more of...
  12. Thanks for the replies, everyone! My carpal tunnel syndrome manifests as wrist itchiness/numbness and hand numbness. I'd believe it was true-computer-caused CTS if I didn't develop similar symptoms in my ankles/feet a few years later. Plus if I lean on a body part it's verrrrrry quick to go numb (I've woken up with numb hips and arms more times than...
  13. I'm from the Tampa Bay area too! Still live here as well.
  14. I'm 21, had symptoms that concerned me for 3 years, but I now realize I've had neurological symptoms for at least 6 because I developed "carpal tunnel syndrome" during freshman year of high school (and blamed excessive computer use). How long does it typically take someone like me to heal? I have signs that intestinal damage has been done (other food intolerances...
  15. I'm not really concerned about my weight, more with how I feel. I've always been skinny. Well, over the past 2 years I gained 15 lbs (even with getting a job that requires being on your feet all day), going from BMI underweight to BMI Healthy (I don't put huge stock into BMI, it's just a reference*). I go on this diet, I've been gluten free since late November...
  16. Very simple... a burger with no bun. Seasoned verrrrry well though, it tasted extra awesome!
  17. Oh yum! I'm definitely going to be trying many of these things!
  18. My parents have been reaallllly supportive of me as well (Well, my dad was initially defensive, but he realized how serious I am about this; I now know I HAVE to be!). My mom was, not excited but she was I guess impressed with me working on figuring out what foods agree with me and what ones don't in addition to going gluten-free. My dad's hugged me on those...
  19. All right. I loooooove green beans (AND they love me! ). I've looked up recipes, but so many have gluten and dairy and other stuff that doesn't agree with me and I'm not creative enough to substitute just yet. What veggies can I combine them with besides potatoes and onions (those two make me tired if I have too many)? Would any fruit work (besides lemon...
  20. I never ate indiscriminately due to this illness causing weird appetite issues, but yeah. For me, the bright side might be the chance to prove all those folks who say to me (I'm 21 and 90% of my coworkers are over 40), "[insert bad thing here] is what happens when you get older" wrong (often that thing is something I'm struggling with NOW like brain...
  21. Congrats! Go you. I'm currently one of those putting off college because I couldn't handle it (I never went in the first place), and this is inspiring to hear. I want to go one day, that's for sure. But that's fantastic!
  22. I've been a month and I have a lot of good days and bad days. On Sunday I had to work and I was MISERABLE and moody as all get out. A lot of my coworkers weren't happy-go-lucky either, but I'd eaten a lot of chocolate with soy in it the night before, and I blame that. Monday it was more mood swings but I was overall better. I ate nothing but veggies and fruit...
  23. OMG I forgot about this thread! Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. He's getting better about not assuming and not getting defensive, I just have to make sure I put my foot down is all. I'll definitely try the colored tape idea.
  24. I had a dream a couple nights ago about eating something that looked like chicken teriyaki. I ravenously consumed it, and after I was done, realized the dish probably had gluten in it! Definitely not one of those dreams you're bummed out to find isn't real, that's for sure!

    ARCHIVED Worth Getting Diagnosed?

Can you lie and say you were diagnosed? I do that sometimes. Generally, when people make a distinction between gluten intolerant and Celiac, the difference is the damage done. Gluten intolerance shows no signs of intestinal damage, whereas Celiac does. Some say that gluten intolerance IS Celiac disease, just a "lite" version or maybe the beginning stages...
