ARCHIVED Negative Results
TooManyHats posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I got all my results today. The biopsy from the 2nd portion of the duodenum was negative, "duodenal mucosa showing normal villous architecture. No evidence of cryptitis or dysplasia." Stomach body biopsy: Gastric mucosa showing mild reactive gastropathy. No evidence of intestinal metaplasia. Giemsa stain is negative for Heliobacter pylori like... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Food Tax Write Off?
TooManyHats replied to Rachel W's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't know about the diet as it relates to autism, but I have heard that if we are officially diagnosed with Celiac and the doctor writes it with our name, diagnosis, and date then we can write-off the DIFFERENCE in the cost between gluten free food and "regular" food. For example, if a loaf of wheat bread costs .99 cents, and a loaf of gluten free bread... -
ARCHIVED Popcorn Got Me Bad!
TooManyHats replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
For those living in New Jersey, I just got off of the phone with Shoprite. Their Certified Organic Butter flavored microwave popcorn is both gluten and soy free. I'm doing the happy dance! -
ARCHIVED Correspondence With Lipton
TooManyHats replied to TooManyHats's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It has soy in it, so I guess it's still out for me. Herb-ox beef (not sure about chicken yet) also has soy. I have no idea what to use in place of that. -
ARCHIVED Correspondence With Lipton

So you all consider it safe then? This would be great news at my house! -
After realizing that Lipton Onion Soup Mix listed soy as an ingredient, I wrote to them. Here is their reply: Thank you for writing us regarding Recipe Secrets Onion Soup . As of Sept. 2010 our LIPTON SOUP SECRETS ONION now states that VEGETABLE YEAST EXTRACT (BARLEY) as an ingredient. Reason for the labeling change Though it was not required...

Sorry I didn't make that more clear. I was talking about soy intolerant. I guess that's what I am now too?
-
Do you consider soy lecithin safe? I've read that the amount of soy protein in soy lecithin is negligible.

Are there any brands of Italian sausage that are gluten and soy free? -
ARCHIVED Feeling Discouraged

You've identified the source of today's problem, the chocolate rice chex. Dang, I really like that too! Plain rice chex for me from now on. I couldn't imagine what I had done wrong today and at least I know now. Thank you for pointing that out. -
I got this recipe prior to diagnosis, so I'll post it and see how all of you may alter it to be gluten free. It's a delicious recipe and would love to figure out how to adapt it to be gluten free. 3 1/2 to 4 lbs of Napa Cabbage, cut up (sliced) 3 bunches of scallions, sliced 8 oz of toasted almond slices 3 pkgs of Ramon noodles (noodles only) 1...

ARCHIVED Feeling Discouraged

That Old El Paso stuff is just way too questionable for me. I like the recipe for the home-made one and will try that. I really don't want to hear that I'm sensitive to soy too. What will be left? I've never had a problem with soy before and have eaten soy icecream before. This has me very depressed. I'm going to buy that tamari stuff and try that... -

Thank you! This looks good. I figure the El Paso sauce wasn't my best choice to date. I've read on another board where someone said they had been glutened by La Choy soy sauce. I'll be picking up the tammari (SP?) sauce to try for next time. -

I ate Polenta for the first time today. I wonder if that's it for today? I'm sure it was the Old El Paso enchilada sauce on Wednesday, not on an approved list, I should have known better. -
I've managed to gluten myself twice in one week. Once with Old El Paso enchilada sauce and the other time with La Choy soy sauce. Neither of these items had anything in the ingredients list that looked like gluten to me and neither listed an allergen other than soy. My stomach hurts and I have D back. I feel like planning a menu takes forever and I really...

ARCHIVED What About Microwaves And Ovens?
TooManyHats replied to domesticactivist's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I generally wrap my whole plate in waxed paper in the microwave. I've also been putting food on a baking dish or on foil. I've even done toast like that (gotta flip it though). I've been washing our sponge and scrubbie pad in the dishwasher everyday and don't put any cooking utensil or eating utensil down unless it's on a paper plate or on a paper towel... -
It's so ironic that this is being discussed today. While out with my son yesterday he wanted to stop at DD. All I could picture was some employee that had handled donuts all day touching my cup and lid. I felt paranoid, but didn't care. We ended up stopping at Wawa (local convenience store) where I could make my own coffee. Success!

I'm guessing this is why I had osteopenia at age 42. I always thought I had it because it ran in my family, now I know better. This is the age I had my last period, too. I always blamed the early menopause on the stress of raising a child with autism, again, now I know better.

ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Makeup

I've been using Physician's Formula, but just looked it up and this is what it said: Q. Does Physicians Formula products contain Gluten? A. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that none of the ingredients, or derivatives in our products do not contain gluten. ARG!! Back to the drawing board. I have to stay away from all fragrances as well. I'm... -

TooManyHats replied to LivesIntheSun's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ahhh...yes, I've gotten the "fad diet" comment too from a relative who funny enough keeps her dog gluten free because of the issues it causes the dog. Her husband suffers from "IBS" and his brother from idiopathic peripheral neuropathy. But when I suggested that perhaps they look at the possibility of Celiac disease, it was brushed off and discounted. ... -

Breakfast is the one meal I can't figure out. The thought of any hot cereal doesn't sit well with me. Same with cottage cheese (not that I have been able to eat dairy in years!). But just how many days can I eat rice checks? Any other suggestions? -
The IV contrast given when you get a CT scan contains iodine. The oral contrast does not. I work in Radiology, that's how I know. That's usually a question they ask, are you allergic to shell fish? That's why they ask.

CT scan contrast contains iodine. I CAN'T believe they didn't ask you this!!! Beware next time! I hope you feel better soon.
