  1. Have you and / or your husband been tested? Logically, your children inherited it from somewhere. We've done no genetic testing (4 children). It's not clear-cut, and even people with no genetic markers have problems with gluten. If your children are improving with no gluten in their diet, then that would be my answer (speaking as a mother). ...
  2. I understand your dilemma. I have 2 little ones, ages 6 & 4, both negative blood work, no symptoms that are readily apparent. I know they have inherited something from me. So I have had the same question - take them gluten-free in anticipation & prevention, or wait for symptoms, or what to do? With their 2 older sisters and me having gluten issues...
  3. I used to be a big cereal eater for breakfast. When I first went gluten-free (only a month ago) I was STARVING in the mornings. I read a lot (mainly on this site) about how you feel more hungry at first, and also about how wheat affects your body with cravings, and I've tried to keep that in mind when I'm hungry! And, as time has passed, my usual morning...
  4. This post may sound kind of trivial, but for some reason I feel the need to settle on a label for "this that has re-directed my path" through life. How should I / how do you refer to your gluten problem? Do you say (or think), "I have celiac disease" or "I am celiac" or "I am gluten intolerant"? I have not had a biopsy, but positive tTG. From lots...
  5. I'm right there with you. Could eat a whole plate of pasta & loaf of bread, and my worst symptom would be the feeling that I've eaten too much. Therefore, if it were me at the Olive Garden Party, I would eat plenty before going, and partake of the vino (and a little salad)!
  6. My vote is to go totally gluten free. Take care of yourself! Your little one will never miss it. It will make life so much easier for you. As for getting her tested, I wouldn't worry about it right now. If symptoms or problems develop in the future, then deal with them at that time. My perspective on this - my kitchen is gradually going gluten-free...
  7. I'm not necessarily interested in trying to re-create traditional wheat flour pancakes. I want something satisfying and flavorful. I'm excited to learn about all these new ingredients and recipes / methods - I love to cook, and this celiac business is opening my eyes and taste buds (and those of my family!) to new things that otherwise we would not try....
  8. Can you share with us.... what is garfava? Teff? I know what brown rice is, duh, but how did you make such pancakes???? Pancakes are a family weekend ritual at my house, and I would love to come up with a good recipe! Tried gluten-free Bisquick last weekend. It was pretty good, actually, and passed the gluten-eaters' taste test. But your post got me interested...
  9. A couple of ideas: Lettuce wrap sandwiches - whole romaine leaves with gluten-free ham, cheese, tomatoes, onions, whatever you like. Add some chicken & rice soup. Quesadillas - corn tortilla, refried beans, cheese. Heat in a skillet & fold over. Top with some fresh salsa. Also any leftover meats I have, like chicken or pieces of steak, I put...
  10. Since recently starting down the gluten-free road, my family and I are going the "whole foods" route - veggies, fruits, meats, nuts & seeds, and some hard cheese & yogurt. When you add other ingredients yourself, like different kinds of oils, certain vinegars, garlic, lemon, onion, ginger, salt & pepper - it makes for a full fridge & pantry...
  11. I don't have any reaction. I've been gluten-free for only a few weeks, though, and I understand that over time you become more sensitive. So I expect that might change for me in the future. It's nice not to have a bad reaction, but at the same time, it makes it very hard to know if you've had any CC or accidental glutening. I figure for me the only way to...
  12. If it were my child, I would work towards resolving the current D before doing anything else. White rice, plain baked / broiled chicken, maybe bananas, water.... and more water. THEN I would look into the celiac and other things. If he's living on chicken stock & fizzy drinks, then his diet is salt and sugar. Good luck and I hope he feels better soon...
  13. I recently tested positive, so all 4 of my girls have been tested (1 was positive). The pediatrician did not hesitate to test, and actually admitted she needed to maybe learn a little more since she was aware of new research & other developments. I told her some of what I've learned, and she listened. She talked to me about each one, and made notes of...
  14. Another thought is to talk to the food service at your school. I'm sure they can help you out, since they most likely have experience dealing with students with different dietary needs. Maybe they can help you with at least one solid hot meal a day, and maybe more! They could point you to their "safe" menu items.
  15. I'm sorry! I know it's hard. But, I'm glad you are doing the best thing for you. Your post didn't say - did you have positive blood tests or what? Have your parents been tested? You got it from somewhere! Do your parents understand what it's all about, and why it's important for you to eat gluten-free? It's hard enough to change your own habits, much less...
  16. Well, I looked up the brand (Ole / La Banderita) and found it included on a safe list. I have not contacted the company. I honestly don't know about the cross-contamination. I think it's likely since they also make flour tortillas. I'm new at all this (recent positive blood test) and am working my way through our eating habits and brands to find out what...
  17. I make my own, too, and then thicken the meat with a little corn masa / water. I use chili powder, lots of cumin, cayenne to taste, garlic powder, onion powder... yum! And much cheaper than the pre-mixed. Also, my husband has us hooked on homemade shells - take corn tortillas and fry one at a time in a little oil. Use tongs and a fork to shape into a shell...
  18. I'm like you - very few symptoms but positive TTg (mine was 31 on a scale of 0-15, so not as high as yours). I've decided against the scope (for now). The treatment is the same regardless of the outcome of the scope. And from reading many many sources, I'm convinced that my blood test results mean no more gluten for me! What really made me decide, however...
  19. thanks very much - I have already located a GI (through this board) who I will go to if I decide to do the biopsy. Given the conversation I had with the previous doc, I think I probably ticked him off! Add to that his "Old Gold Standard" stance..... don't think I would have any confidence or be able to discuss much with him. As a contrast, my pediatrician...
  20. This site is so helpful.... thanks in advance! I do not have severe symptoms all the time, but bouts with the big D several times a year, and some of the more minor symptoms that I have read about. My PCP had a "Celiac Disease Evaluation" done based on my medical history, not on current symptoms which have been nearly absent. Results are: IgA Total...
