  1. Unexplained hip pain was one of my symptoms that prompted my doc to test me for celiac. It was so bad - had to take pain relievers to sleep, couldn't lay on either side, could only creep up hills / inclines while walking, stiff on standing up, etc. That is all gone now, and disappeared within days of my going gluten free.
  2. I have a 4 & 6 year old. We have gently turned the house gluten-free except for their school sandwich bread. They have griped a little, but they got over it. We do different crunchy snacks now, like carrots, corn chips, popcorn, gluten-free pretzels, etc. I am educating them about gluten and the crumbs - they are learning to ask me to help with the sandwich...
  3. I also had positive blood results, like yours, that were not really high. After going through the same thought process as you have gone through, I decided against the biopsy for the same reasons (plus various US health insurance reasons). Basically I would not have trusted a negative result, and would have gone gluten free anyway. I decided to get on with...
  4. Family of 5 here - the only gluten item we have is sandwich bread for lunches, and I make the sandwiches. Sometimes we have pretzels which are easy enough to monitor. It was too much worry to have gluten around. The youngest children are 4 & 6 - old enough to fix snacks but too young to keep things gluten-free. I started out trying to have a mixed kitchen...
  5. Before I quit eating gluten I would have sworn that I was "silent." Not so. It's just that the symptoms were subtle, and things that I never would have suspected were connected to gluten. One of them is anxiety - I live in an area that sees LOTS of severe weather in the spring, and also year-round. I HATE tornadoes. They scare the living &*($ out of me...
  6. How maddening! That borders on unethical for the doc to run a test without your consent or knowledge. Have you talked to them about that, and that you have been denied as a result? Maybe there is something they could do on your behalf to appeal the decision. Were you diagnosed via endoscopy following the blood results to get a formal, classic diagnosis...
  7. Very interesting! thanks. Insurance issues are the main reason I never pursued an endoscopy which could possibly have given me an official diagnosis. However I still fear that simply the act of having the blood test and a GI consult might be a problem at some point.
  8. What I love to make with leftover salmon is a salad - especially easy with the ready-to-eat salad greens. Add a few nuts if you can eat them, and some olive oil/vinegar/lemon. yum. You're off to a great start! I started writing down the meals we have plus notes on how I cooked things to make my own menus / cookbook. So you have 2 entries already!
  9. mscurious - hope you feel better soon, and that you get some answers re your situation. I know you are glad to get your testing done finally! goodnews - I have to chime in on the side of leaving your body parts where they are. Surgery is a serious thing - there are many dangers inherent in the procedure (anesthesia, infection, accidental damage to other...
  10. This is a grey area that I'm not sure what to do. I'm not super-sensitive, so it's hard to know when & if I get contaminated. But, from what I understand, even if a teeny bit is ingested, there is an internal physical reaction of some kind. So that would mean avoiding any potential of cross-contamination which would include shared lines, produced in a...
  11. Put drops of peroxide on it several times a day. Also it helps if he can hold his lip open to get air on it to dry it out.
  12. What about the soy? Some people have trouble with that.
  13. The best part is the healthful eating. I've always eaten healthfully, but with lots of lapses, especially for the sake of convenience. Like yesterday - doing errands with family, didn't go to the grocery store so not much at home to eat - before we probably would've gotten a pizza or something. But not now - and honestly I had a few tears of frustration...
  14. Now that I know I have celiac disease, I am working on my family members to make them aware and hopefully for them to get tested. My oldest daughter has it, and another daughter is intolerant. Looking at others, I can see symptoms in my siblings and mother. My father passed away years ago from cancer, and thinking about his overall health, gluten could have...
  15. My just-about-all-time-favorite soup is avgolemono, which is Greek Egg & Lemon Soup. Super easy to make and so so yummy! This probably isn't a classic recipe but I was married to a Greek Cypriot and this is how he made it. Ingredients are chicken / chicken stock, cooked rice, egg(s), lemon juice. Cook a chicken in water to make a big pot full of...
  16. Little ones go through phases where they eat more at times, less at times. Maybe he's at a point where he is not eating much. The best luck I had with mine (4 girls) is to put just a little bit out, and let them feed themselves. Peas, little bitty cooked carrots, apples...I heat the peanut butter in the microwave to make it soft and easy to dip. Let him help...
  17. I'm no expert - new to this and still reading and absorbing all the information. What I have learned for sure is that you may never get a black-and-white, yes-or-no answer. If you feel better not eating gluten, the stop eating it. 100%. There is no middle ground. Personally, I could not go back to eating gluten for a challenge to try to get a test result...
  18. I would use Lansinoh (nipple ointment)sometimes which would help when nothing else would. I don't think it's great for a yeast infection, but rashes would clear up overnight that I had been treating various ways for days.
  19. Have you suggested celiac to your doc? It is an easy thing to get a blood test and some information from the results before you quit eating gluten completely. Once you do that it's really hard to get any testing that is accurate. It would help you to understand what is going on inside you now, and also because at some point you will probably want to know...

    ARCHIVED Overwhelmed.

I try not to think about the "forever" of it. One meal at a time, one day at a time....
  21. From a post on this board - "Thank you for visiting Open Original Shared Link We always appreciate your comments and questions about NESTLE( CARNATION( INSTANT BREAKFAST( and how our complete nutritional drink may fit into your daily meal plan or just your morning routine. In response to your inquiry, some flavors of CARNATION INSTANT BREAKFAST contain...
  22. Some suggestions - fresh veggies already cut up, like baby carrots, sugar snap peas, snow peas. bananas. apples in peanut butter - get one of those apple slicers and that's a quick one. Try Lara Bars - a little pricey but filling. My daughter sticks them in her backpack. Nuts - like cashews, almonds, pecans, sunflower seeds. Raisins, dried apricots, craisins...
  23. just to check with you again - your list says "cheese bread." Is that bread made of wheat flour or gluten-free flours?
  24. thanks for this link! Just this past weekend I was discussing celiac at a family get-together, to raise awareness and hopefully prompt them to get tested. So this is really helpful information for me to pass on to relatives who have regular infections - at least 2 that I know of!
  25. If it's any consolation, my youngest followed a similar pattern on the growth charts, but caught up by her 4th birthday. We didn't know about my celiac at the time, and she has had no symptoms and tested negative recently. Therefore during her growth spurt she did not have any change to her diet. So your son's growth could be related to the gluten-free diet...
