Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
current plan is to leave in September. I'm waiting on the Visa but got all the proper paperwork in. Will buy plane tickets this week! -
ARCHIVED Can't... Stop... Sleeping...
Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
yes, all my bloodwork has come back normal consistently--for thyroid and iron. My iron was always on the low side of normal, but I started taking supplements and it got better. I need to be more vigilant about washing my hands, I think, definitely. I can't have a gluten-free house, but we try really hard to eliminate CC when preparing food. I have my own... -
ARCHIVED Introduction And Questions
Strawberry-Jam replied to Bryan E's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just wanted to add that EGGS ARE NOT DAIRY. So... you can eat them even if you cut out dairy. Eggs come from chickens. Chickens don't even lactate. So... idk. Unless you specifically react to eggs, they should be fine for you, and a good source of protein. Also, I would recommend fish too, if you don't want to eat other kinds of meat. -
ARCHIVED I Want A Cup Of Coffee So Bad Right Now
Strawberry-Jam replied to Poppi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
back when I started having trouble with caffeine I switched to roasted barley tea... which, haha, bad idea, but it tasted like coffee kinda without a lick of caffeine. There is a such thing as roasted buckwheat tea... try it maybe? If it's the roasted flavor that you like, it might be nice. -
ARCHIVED Do You Aim For Gluten Free Or Completely Grain Free?
Strawberry-Jam replied to ErinP's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
idk... I practically live on rice. I have rice every day pretty much, in some form or another, usually stir-fried with meat and egg or smth. Other times I'll have rice bread or chex. I try to avoid corn for the most part but I don't avoid it like I do gluten or soy. I don't do much with other grains tho. I did buy some cream of buckwheat but I haven't... -

I did just want to add that *part* of the problem was probably dehydration. I feel a little better from drinking a ton of water about an hour ago. Not 100%, but good enough to go get some yard work done. Sorry about your sleepless nights. I used to struggle with insomnia a lot as a teen and I think a lot of my sleep problems were gluten-related. But... -
I posted this a little while back... (in a different thread, got no reply). well, now I'm in the same boat again. This time I slept nine hours last night, got up to eat brunch and watch TV, then slept about 2+ hours. My head feels funny and I could totally fall asleep again. My body is screaming at me to but I'm going to wait as long as I can and...

ARCHIVED Moving To Ireland?
Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
thanks! I'm getting more and more excited as the days go by--just gotta get all the paperwork in now... -
I have been researching my international options now that I have graduated from University in the States, and have decided that I want to do BUNAC's 12 month "Work in Ireland" program. I would leave in September/October timeframe and then return 12 months later. I'll be on a tight budget, but I figure I can get by eating a whole foods diet (and lots of rice...

ARCHIVED Advice Please On Cost Of Gluten Free Bread
Strawberry-Jam replied to Harpgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
We have a local gluten-free bakery here in Colorado called "Outside the Breadbox" that makes very good gluten-free bread. If you buy the two-day old bread, which is discounted, you can actually get a reasonable price for a loaf. Since my bread goes straight into the fridge or freezer, I don't care if it's a few days old when it gets to me. You might be... -
I know this is probably not the right place to ask, but I'm feeling out all my options at the moment. I am an American citizen who just graduated from University, and I want to relocate to somewhere in the UK for a year or so, just for the experience. Of course, I have an English degree and no skills as of yet, since I just got out, so it isn't going to be...

ARCHIVED Retail Therapy - Celiac Style
Strawberry-Jam replied to Poppi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know the feeling. Whenever I come across a new food I cannot eat--either when I discovered I couldn't have soy and had to give away/throw out 1/3 of my food, or whenever I discover a new thing that upsets my stomach for some reason--I go grocery shopping and spend at LEAST $50 on food that I CAN have. Doesn't stop the frustration of wasting money on food... -
ARCHIVED Still Adjusting, Too
Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Like I said before, I have no idea when I got glutened or what by. But today I basically slept all day. I went to bed at eleven last night, slept ten hours, got up for breakfast, slept for an hour or so, watched some TV, ate a tiny lunch, slept a few more hours, and then ended up sleeping from one pm to six pm (which is now). I'm tired enough to go back... -
ARCHIVED Still Adjusting, Too
Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
got off the antacids because of acid rebound from nexium. My reflux went completely away for a while but comes back now when glutened. I still have nexium I guess I could take when glutened... usually I rely on gluten-free Tums for the short term. only real help when glutened is to limit total food intake because any and all food will cause reflux at times... -
Just a bit of venting I guess. Been gluten-free as I can since march and soy-free for a while too. My symptoms from a glutening is primarily terrible reflux that lasts for days, lots of gas/bloating, and then fatigue and headaches that set in a few days later. With soy I get depressed within 12-24 hours, and gassy immediately. But my symptoms are not severe...

I've had some pretty uncomfortable gas off and on since going gluten-free. Thought I'd approach this semi-scientifically. It's like a survey. I was okay for a while but then started bloating up again. It's possible I got glutened at a friends house when fed rice cooked in a cast-iron pan stirred with a wooden spoon (CC)?? It can also be leftover from when...

ARCHIVED Reactions To Gluten? Help!
Strawberry-Jam replied to reijnen's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Some people do have delayed reactions like that. Perhaps uncommon, but not unheard of. If I were you, I would go on a total elimination diet at this point. This is interfering with your functioning. Help your belly heal by only feeding it what you're sure won't upset it. Then if you improve drastically you'll know it's food. If you don't after a month... -
ARCHIVED Eating Out - Asian Food
Strawberry-Jam replied to rain's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
any Asian restaurant worth its salt would never put anything in sticky rice but steamed rice! adding wheat binders etc. would be a sign of being CHEAP. It's the species of rice that determines if it's sticky or not, not additives or something. I can't have soy myself, as well as gluten. I tend to get sashimi when I go to Japanese restaurants... can't go... -
ARCHIVED Fellow Soy Sensitives

I don't think I have any skin-contact allergies. Most of my symptoms are neurological. -
ARCHIVED Fellow Soy Sensitives
Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thank you all for the recipes! When I move home I think I will buy some Namaste mixes/flours in bulk from amazon. For now, I found a cool brand in the grocery store called "1-2-3 Gluten Free." From the box: "Manufactured in a dedicated allergen-free facility (NO gluten, wheat, dairy, casein, peanuts, tree nuts, eggs and soy.)" The mixes were a... -
ARCHIVED Do You Eat Foods Produced On Shared Lines?
Strawberry-Jam replied to zus888's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
for now, no. But perhaps I will try shared facilities in the future. Never shared equipment though, considering the problem I've had with trace amounts of soy. -
ARCHIVED An Open Letter To My Grandmother
Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
She wants to get better, I think! And she will get tested *eventually*... I just don't think she knows that her specific symptoms are linked in a strong way to celiac. I just wanted some people who share her symptoms to weigh in so I could tell her, "look, this person has this and this too, and got better!" My symptoms are somewhat different. But she kept... -

ARCHIVED An Open Letter To My Grandmother
Strawberry-Jam posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hello all! As you prolly know by now, I was diagnosed about a month ago with celiac disease--first person in my family to get the dx. I've had a lot of ups and downs recently, but have such hope because I've seen what a good day can be like. Anyway, my father has already been tested (waiting for results) and my mother is going to get tested. But my grandmother... -
ARCHIVED Do You Feel More Weepy When Glutened?
Strawberry-Jam replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would wait to make sure it was a pattern first, and not an isolated incident. Also, don't make any decisions regarding the future of such important relationships while still under the influence of gluten! It is like a drug. But once you're gluten "sober" if this is a constant pattern and not a mistake/something he regrets and never will do again...
