  1. What are the gluten-containing ingredients often found in lotions and soaps, etc. that we ought to avoid? I see wheat germ oil on the list. Also I assume anything involving oats. What else should we be on the lookout for?
  2. two words: menstrual cups. (see menstrualcups.org) My period's never been the same since I started using my Yuuki. And it's probably coincidence, but I swear my cramps have also gotten better since I started using it. Also reusable cotton pads are gluten-free and good for the environment.
  3. Thanks for the tip. I am noticing increased reflux, but it should subside soon. My mother quit Nexium recently and she was okay... and I took it very inconsistently for not very long, so I should be normal soon. I think I was "glutened" recently... on Thurs I was hit with a sudden wave of fatigue, sharp headaches, and muscle pains, unlike anything I've...
  4. I would think you would be fine as long as you stayed out of the kitchen... I mean, how sensitive to gluten are you?
  5. I can't think of a trigger, really... I suffered from constant fatigue and headaches since I was in high school, going back and forth between depression and normality, but I never really had stomach issues... I ate pretty much anything; no allergies, no pickiness. I always thought I had some kind of sleep disorder, and was prescribed sleep aids when my bloodwork...
  6. I have a friend with Asperger's syndrome (putting him on the autism spectrum) who is struggling off and on with depression, anxiety, and a racing heart. I know that Asperger's can definitely lead to anxiety/depression by itself due to all the social pressures and the sensation that you're "missing something" when with others, but... He tested positive...
  7. Another update: I think my Nexium might be causing problems instead of fixing 'em. I ate some of my coconut milk ice cream today, expecting it go go over smoothly--but right after eating it, I got all bloaty and burpy, with gas pains and burping up stomach contents! Just like I did with normal ice cream. But this ice cream was gluten-, dairy-, and...
  8. I would do that a lot with my reflux before diagnosis--"well, if I'm already having terrible reflux and feel this bad, then I might as well eat what I want." Then it got worse... I hated myself several times for binging on chocolate (which I don't even LIKE! what is my problem?) and alcohol (by binge I mean not a lot but rather too close to bedtime) and...
  9. Totally cleaned out my fridge the other day, washing the shelves in the sink and wiping all crumbs etc. out. Looks very clean and nice, XD. I put all my food on the top shelves, and my roommate's on the bottom, and put gluten-free shared stuff (like eggs, fruit juices, etc) in the middle. Then I labeled the top shelf of the fridge and the pantry "gluten-free...
  10. I don't know what part of the country you're in, but I know that Eat 'n' Park (found in the Ohio Valley for sure) has a gluten-free menu and seem educated about cross-contamination. Ate there once and didn't have a problem. I also heard that PF Chang's and Red Robin are good about gluten-free, but I don't know from experience.
  11. Ugh. My roommate doesn't really bake, but I do... did... and I think I did that, at least with the sugar. I really don't know! But I have a feeling I did CC myself a lot before this.
  12. Good luck to you, too! I definitely noticed symptoms from dairy the minute I went gluten free so I would suggest you cut out dairy as well at first. It's good not to be alone in this.
  13. think about it this way: they poisoned you. Sure, not intentionally, but that's what happened. you have to do something about that. If more people like you stand up for your health, maybe the world will become more celiac-friendly as time goes by... okay, I'm getting off my soapbox now.
  14. I JUST realized that I can't have my roasted barley tea anymore (mugicha). I loved that stuff. It tasted kinda like coffee but without the caffeine...
  15. Some of that sounds like food poisoning to me--especially the fact that it tasted terrible. I would definitely look into whether anyone else got sick from it. It was probably CC'd too, judging from how clueless everyone sounds, but still. It could've been both too.
  16. this gives me so much hope! I might be sensitive to chemicals as well (not scents per se) because I'm pretty sure when I worked at a daycare and had to spray everything down with bleachwater at the end of the day it totally got to me. So I started wearing a mask when I did that. Helped a little. Nevertheless, the headaches also have other causes because...
  17. What do your headaches feel like when glutened now compared to back before you were diagnosed? Are they a lot worse? Sudden? I'm planning on cutting dairy out of my diet come Monday, and getting stricter about CC. Hopefully the headaches will vanish! It's always hard hearing people say, "ooh, I've got a headache," when I have a headache CONSTANTLY, you...
  18. Ugh. I totally feel you. I've always been an extremely low-energy person, to the point where I have to say no to a lot of socializing and staying-up-late that should be a normal part of the college experience. I am an introvert, but more of one than I'd like to be. And I feel like I hardly get anything done because I'm always needing to nap if I try reading...
  19. Hello all. I just received my diagnosis of Celiac Disease on Feb 25th, which came as a surprise since most of my symptoms (acid reflux, gas, bloating, nausea) were mild compared to y'all's. I'm only a few days into the diet so I haven't noticed much. However, I have suffered from near 24/7 headaches since I was in high school, and I was wondering if...
  20. I've only just started the gluten-free diet, so I don't know what my symptoms of being glutened are yet, but my pre-diagnosis symptoms involved a lot of acid reflux and the strong desire to vomit--even burping up chunks of food. but I have practically no gag reflex, so that might explain why I never actually vomited. (I can reach my finger all the way down...
  21. I actually ate a spoonful of flour once, before the blood test, because I was all like, "no WAY am I going to get a false negative on this!!" It's really, really gross. :/
  22. thanks for your help! I have completely cleaned out our pantry shelves and placed my food on the top two shelves and hers on the bottom two--she has open bags of chips and cookies on 'em, so it made sense to switch. The middle shelf is spices and stuff we share that are all gluten-free as far as I know. And I found a lot of crumbs when I was cleaning out...
  23. I've only just started the gluten-free diet myself (diagnosed two days ago), but still... why would you want to cheat if it's gonna make you sick? I guess it would depend on how sick you were gonna get, but... I'm pretty good about enduring pain/discomfort in the present to avoid it in the future (or at least I like to think so).
  24. thanks for your help. Currently all my food is on the bottom shelf... should I ask my roommate if we can switch shelves so my food is on the top? College student here, so no other storage space. As for communion, I am Eastern Orthodox... a group that believes it must be wheat bread and grape wine for valid consecration. However, I talked to my priest...
  25. I'm sure you get a lot of posts like this but I wanted to see what y'all had to say about my specific situation. I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease yesterday. My biopsy showed "inflammation" (positive) and my blood tests were undoubtedly positive (he said that for one of the #s under 30 was normal and I had 137 or smth like that). I have gone through...
