  1. It looks like the company is still in clinical trials: Open Original Shared Link They have completed a phase IIb trial which studies the efficacy of the drug although they don't appear to have released the results. And there's some stuff going on with another company: Open Original Shared Link and there's an article on this website: https://www.celiac...
  2. thanks for the suggestions! (although it's Daddy, not Mommy ). We're actually in the process of investigating the younger one for his tendency towards infections of various types. I will ask the pediatrician to check for celiac antibodies as we get more blood work done. My older son was being a bit of a PITA for a bit ("no gluten? Yuck!") until...
  3. I think you're right. It's not like baking pasta gets vaporized or anything...just some steam comes out! Darn kids Next time I'll just pre-serve myself from the communal bowl and not worry about it. They're 5 and 7, and while they know I'm avoiding some foods this isn't their problem to keep track of!
  4. Is the brain fog a lifelong problem? I have ADD and going gluten-free did alleviate a bit of brain fog, getting me back to my usual level of mental disorganization. There's no cure for ADD although it is highly treatable.
  5. Got the numbers today and they were below normal. But I had the same blood test last fall as part of a physical and the potassium is down 8% in 6 months. Last fall it was on the lowest level for the "normal" range. And I'm positive for the celiac gene. I still don't have a single lab test that is 100% unambiguous for celiac, but all signs are pointing...
  6. I got my hands on a small gluten-free spinach lasagna from a local bakery. They have a separate freezer, separate kitchen, etc. for their gluten-free items. We cooked it at home in an oven at the same time as a conventional lasagna. This morning I had lots of stomach upset, a migraine, basically the symptoms I'm coming to associate with gluten exposure...
  7. I didn't realize there was an Rx version, although I guess that's not too surprising. My local pharmacy is very good (little indy place, not giant chain) so if there's a gluten-free version on the market they'll find it. Do you know what brand it was? I'm due for my new blood work in 5 or 6 days and I'll see if bananas (yum) and OJ (ick) do the trick....
  8. While further investigating me for celiac my doc ordered some tests for nutrient levels. My potassium level scored low, low enough to have me eating lots of bananas and OJ before re-testing me next week. Interestingly, for quite some time before going gluten-free I would wake up with very stiff and achy muscles and joints (not normal for 36, in hindsight...
  9. We used the King Arthur flour last night for dredging turkey cutlets before browning. It worked perfectly. I like the KA better than Glutino, which I found to be somewhat gritty.
  10. I've had the complete opposite experience. Going gluten-free has largely killed my snack habits. In hindsight I had some real addictive behavior going on with gluten - whenever I'd feel stressed or frustrated I'd grab a wheat-filled snack and munch away. Anything with a crunch (pretzels! oreos!) but I wasn't too picky provided there was refined wheat flour...
  11. about 10 years ago I spent most of my workouts doing Olympic lifts or kettlebells. I miss being in great shape LOL. I used to consume this company's whey isolate: Open Original Shared Link you can choose your flavorings and sweetener. It mixes very thin (not cake batter-ish like some products) and is easy to slurp down. Back then I had real trouble with...
  12. Ok I'm a road rider but a bike's a bike, right? Post ride nutrition should consist of carbs and some protein (you're not weightlifting here so no need to go protein crazy). I don't think gluten-free eating effects that particularly much, just reach for those Glutino multi-grain crackers with a scoop of cottage cheese . Gels can be handy for a quick carb...
  13. Naproxen sodium (Aleve) is in my experience less irritating than ibuprofen is to the stomach.
  14. Wow. That's a frightening rate - I had no idea that such bone loss was possible so quickly. I meet w/ my GI doc in 3 weeks and the gene test and a bone scan for a baseline on my list.
  15. Darn. I even bought the gluten-free soy sauce to use at home, and yet never once thought it might be in the fried rice...that's what I get for listening to my stomach. Next time I will call them, quiz them on the wheat-ness of their curries, and try one of those with some (safe) steamed rice. Or just eat at home for 1/3 the price and a fraction of the...
  16. Friday night: got takeout Thai food. Feeling clever, I got a fried rice dish and ate it with no consequences. I think I'm now almost 3 weeks gluten-free with no known consumption til now. Saturday: upset stomach, steatorrhea (which had vanished within a day of going gluten-free) is back. Sunday: ate leftover fried rice for dinner, followed an hour later...
  17. I just tried it ice cold. My favorite beers have always been IPA's, ESB's, stouts, and other highly hopped, bitter beers. I wasn't much of a lighter beer drinker. I thought the Red Bridge was perfectly decent for a lager and didn't have too much sweetness. I can live with this. Wine and mixed drinks are always an option.
  18. I have adult ADD. Going gluten-free definitely did relieve some level of brain fog and distractibility after just a few days, although I definitely, 100%, still have ADD. The greater energy throughout the day and reduced caffeine intake also had a positive cognitive effect. I'm in the process of working w/ a psychiatrist on medication to help me out...I...
  19. I use a cheap chimney starter. Just squirt a bit of vegetable oil (any kind) on some crumpled up newspaper (or cardboard, or paper bags, etc), stuff 'em in the bottom, fill it with charcoal, and light the paper. 12 minutes later it'll be glowing red coals all the way up and you dump it and you're ready to rock. Just don't overdo the oil or it'll smoke...
  20. I went into anaphylaxis from exposure to wintergreen oil (methyl salicylate) 18 months ago. Looking back, I'm wondering if that when I started to have a lot of digestive upset issues...hard to say. I don't avoid salicylate foods but I do avoid aspirin, Pepto-Bismol, and Listerine.
  21. The stuff is everywhere! That's an easy thing to fix at least, just use lump charcoal.
  22. The gluten headaches are fading away, thank goodness. As I posted in my other thread the final diagnosis is for gluten sensitivity but not actual celiac disease, so I will remain gluten free since it really seems to be having a positive health effect. My joint aches and digestive upset have gone away, I have more energy, and the mental fog has cleared a...
  23. I've finally heard back from the doc...it looks like between the degree of inflammation found, the negative bloodwork, and the improved wellbeing after a week off of gluten that the proper diagnosis is gluten sensitivity but not celiac. I have a face-to-face in a couple of weeks during which I'll ask a raft of questions and I will stick to the gluten free...
  24. Yes! It feels just like caffeine withdrawal headaches. Speaking of which I am definitely cutting back on the caffeine, starting tomorrow, with the goal of 100% decaf intake in a week. I might as well, the headaches can hardly get worse, right?!
  25. Day 6 and now the migraines are starting in the AM. I will try to moderate my caffeine intake...I don't think my productivity is going to be super high today.
