  1. I'm sorry you are dealing with vertigo. While I was still on gluten, I had an attack so bad that I just went down to the floor. I remember telling my husband to call the doctor or the funeral home. Vertigo is totally debiliting. I am better now but still can have some times when I am woosy. I take a decongestant and do feel better. Hope this helps....
  2. Ok. let's think about this. I'm not a doctor so I can't tell you what you should or not do. However, you say you are feeling better. I know that the longer I am on this diet the more I love it. At 62 I feel better than I have a right to. So if you feel better, why do you want to make yourself sick again? Remember we have one of the healthiest diets...
  3. I've had brittle nails my whole life. This includes the time before my thyroid quit functioning. I have no clue, except they seem to break less as I go along with this diet. I am at about the 5 year mark.
  4. This is a really interesting question and one most of us can't really answer. I believe my mom had Celiac because she was always complaining about "gall bladder". My grand mother died from a gallbladder surgery so the connection is there. Both my sister and I are Celiacs. At least 2 of my 7 children have it. Only one that has been tested does not have...
  5. Very interesting read. However, my mom, grandma, sis, myself, and at least two children are now gluten free. Genetic, also?
  6. How interesting! I had to have a spinal fusion because the pedicle on my vertebrae didn't form or was some how broken. My daughter with Celiac also had to have the same operation. A doctor told me that many Celiacs have low bone density. Have we hit on another thing that doctors haven't told us or don't know? What a mind jogger. I now wonder how many...
  7. Steve is correct. However, I know from personal experience that I was very depressed when the doctor told me that my symptoms were in my mind and there was nothing more she could do for me. I was dying. I know how I felt and I was depressed. Sooooo, maybe in some cases it is related. Still I would check out the Celiac first. The depression improves...
  8. I believe I have read of a link between the two. My sister(also a Celiac) has always accused me of being very unbalanced. Since my diagnosis over 3years ago, I find myself much happier and settled.
  9. Just a word or two about weight loss and Celiac. I have been gluten free for about 4 years. At first I had lost so much I just didn't care. I wanted to gain back weight but went about it in the wrong way. Soon I couldn't stop gaining. I believe (right 0r wrong) that my system had been starved for so long that it over compensated. I also ate a lot of...
  10. No, I haven't tried any of these recipes . Thanks for the info. I am going to try the bread recipe since you said it was good. Thanks again. R. Savage
  11. Sorry, I can't say much about the flax seed oil. I take and grind fresh flax seed each and every morning and find that I feel much better. I use a small electric coffee grinder. I would recommend using light golden flax and keeping it in a cool dark place. The oil goes rancid very quickly. Just a suggestion. I hope this helps. Lots of Luck, R. Savage
  12. Hi, Cipro is an old friend and enemy. Cipro is the last antibiotic that I took before I got so sick that a doctor told me there was nothing she could do for me. Fortunatly my husband insisted I go to a teaching hospital where I was diagnosed with Celiac sprue. However, this medicine is very hard on the stomach. If your intestine is at all irritated you...
  13. I just loved the thread on this particular topic.I am a 62 year old woman who has had her share of weight battles. I own an entire wardrobe for 4 different sized people. (6, 8, 10, 12, and some 14's.) I have been on Nutrisystem and Jenny Craig until I was diagnosed at 58. I am hypothyroid and have both kinds of arthritis. Exercise is still an option...
  14. Dear Jackie, I am a 62 year old female. I was diagnosed 4 years ago. I had been told that I had exercise induced asthma at age 40. As I began to recover I noticed that I didn't need my inhaler any more. Now I've been told that I don't have asthma. I do notice that when I accidentally get some gluten my chest tightens. I can only tell you my experience...
  15. It is possible to have a sensitivity to corn at all levels. I have not regularly consumed corn but find it makes me excessively hungry and very uncomfortable kind of like my body is trying to keep hold of nutrients. I don't know that this will help. However, I have found by process of elimination that certain things I hadn't thought of do cause me problems...
  16. Hi! Iam an LDS mom and would encourage you to make your concerns known to your bishop. Celiac is not an out for doing things you want to do. I know that I would welcome a missionary with Celiac. He/She would have dinner every night and maybe lunch and breakfast, too. We are everywhere. We will help you. Keep the faith. You can do this. I'll even mail...
  17. I went gluten and casein free all at once because I had no choice. I was so ill only applesauce and rice would stay down. However, if you know you have problems with both why not get totally well? You are worth feeling great! No, I didn't say just better, I said great. Congratulate yourself for the distance you have come but remember the race isn't over...
  18. Dear Julie, I have to tell you that at one time I used to feel like a man from outerspace. My disease was so wierd that people just couldn't believe that I would not eat any gluten or milk products. Then one day as a waitress told me to "just pick off the croutons" I exploded. I had had enough. I informed her that I needed a new salad and if I did not...
  19. Funny, I thought I was the only one to get really dense waiters. I got one who brought my meal and informed me that there we sugar in the fruit, since they had no sugar free fruit.
  20. I wouldn't give one red cent for a pill. I have taken pills all of my life because of this disease. I would just keep on with the diet as is. I feel better than ever and have more energy than most 60 year olds should have. Pills? Thanks any way. RS
  21. My heritage is, as most, a mixed bag. German, English, Swiss and of course the ever lovable Irish. Any or all of these could be considered Northern European. Guess we have a lot of that going around. My husband's family is Danish and while he is not a celiac, we have at least one of our seven offspring as a diagnosed celiac. My sister, mother and grandmother...
  22. Just a note, I have gluten ataxia. It was undiagnosed as such. I presented with dizziness and was told it was because of my allergies. After taking antibiotics and antihistimines, it abated only to reappear a month or so later. I battled with it for years until I found out I was a celiac. Diet has helped but I fear I have permanent damage. Royann
  23. I was really looking forward to posts about celebs. However couldn't help but post a response. My mom and grandma passed away from celiac. It was never diagnosed. My mom died of dehydration. The intestine becomes so permable that water cannot be retained. My doctor had given up on me because I was in the hospital at least once a week w/dehydration....
  24. I need help I am a diagnosed celiac. My daughter refuses to have a genetic test. She has a rash, thyroid problems, blood sugar problems, has had bone problems , possibly lack of bone formation, severe morning sickness etc. Many of the symptoms I had before diagnosis, when I was having children. She took a blood test over a year ago and doesn't see it...
