  1. Haven on 2502 Algerian Way (713) 581-6101. This is central Houston, but the chef is very knowledgable, so it may be worth the trek. My husband showed the chef my Cecelia's Marketplace dining card, the chef said "Oh, that's just standard for cooking for those with celiac." The web site doesn't show a gluten-free menu, but when we were there, they gave me...
  2. Not much to add except that you may want to eat white rice instead of brown. Brown rice gives me terrible stomach pain, and I know it bothers a good number of people who malabsorb fructose (though why it does, I have no idea since it doesn't contain fructose!).
  3. Interesting site. I'll put his book on my list of what to try if high fiber doesn't work. Thanks!
  4. My recipe for this includes 1 tsp vanilla, which I think is a nice addition. I learned it when I worked for a cookie stamp manufacturing company 14 years ago. They have 5 gluten-free recipes (some I've never tried): Open Original Shared Link this link takes you to the mint and candies recipes which should be gluten-free (double check, though, cause I just...
  5. Can't speak to the rest of it, but I get this from constipation. It's been plaguing me for almost a year.
  6. (Sorry this is so long. Just trying to anticipate details people would ask me about!) I
  7. My neurologist has checked my B12 levels twice now, so they're good so far. Also checked my thyroid functioning and for diabetes when I told him I was dehydrated. All were normal (turned out to be the Allegra I was taking). I love how this guy actually LISTENS to what I say and is proactive into looking into what may be causing symptoms!
  8. While I love my iPad, if I were you, I'd buy some pots. Maybe buy a couple at a time? A 4-quart sauce pan and a 12-inch skillet will make a LOT of different things. I'd prefer to spend $$$ on stainless steel pots since they last forever and $ on non-stick since they get scratched and lose their stick so quickly. I LOVE my All Clad stainless steel,...
  9. Thanks! I do think the tingling in my hands takes longer to be triggered than it used to, so I think I'm seeing improvements there. I still get tingling in my feet and calves from time to time. I'm beginning to wonder if my C is from my nervous system and not just food related. However, I got really backed up after testing brown rice last week, so maybe...
  10. Google FODMAP diet and see if you might want to try that. You basically take all the most likely food offenders out of your diet and then slowly add them back in. I found that fructans and excess fructose bother me. And for some reason brown rice gives me VERY bad stomach pain. I'd also recommend keeping a food diary of everything you eat and all your...
  11. Sorry I wan't clear that this challenge is strictly for peace of mind. I'd have to find a whole new GI doc to get testing, and I figure if I react to eating gluten again, a test wouldn't be necessary. My GI doc said that he wasn't sure why my neurologist wants me off gluten since according to him it only causes D and not C like I have and it's only a disease...
  12. *Edited to clarify* this is not a challenge so I can get another blood test or biopsy. I only mentioned the blood test to show that I don't have a definite diagnosis. I feel better off gluten, but I also feel better off fructose and fructans, which I cut out the day I cut out gluten. I don't know if going off all of them made the difference or only the...
  13. I have peripheral neuropathy, and my neurologist is the one who told me to go on a gluten free diet! He's a VERY intelligent, scientist kind of guy. He said the blood test for celiac is often falsely negative, so he doesn't put much faith into it. And that many of his patients who had a negative test got better on a gluten-free diet. Anyway, my book...
  14. Have you looked into fructose malabsorption? It can cause brain fog and does for me if I eat too much of it.
  15. I have read that canker sores can be caused by gluten, but aren't they always ulcers that go into the skin? I sometimes get blisters on the inside of my lips/mouth, and I wasn't sure if people get that kind of mouth sore after ingesting gluten. I ask because I went out of town recently and ended up with two blisters the day after my trip. I NEVER get two...
  16. I get this, along with stomach pain, if I eat foods high in fructose (certain fruits, onions, some sweeteners, etc). The tricky thing is that the symptoms don't show up until a couple of days after I eat an offending food. So what I eat before the pain is not necessarily what's causing the pain. You may want to keep a food diary to see if your problems...
  17. I had this prep (the liquid) and my reaction was as brutal as the above poster's. It was awful. Took me two days to recover; however, I don't react well to anesthesia, so that doesn't help. Saying that, I'll do it again when I turn 50. It really is an important screening tool.
  18. Two of my four kids are very picky (one due to tongue coordination problems, one due to heightened sensitivities). It's tough. Here's a link to a post where I was asking about store-bought food for the kids: Interestingly, my least picky child is having the hardest time with all of this. I think he has a set idea in his mind of what food should taste...
  19. Thanks! I used it last night to dredge some chicken, and my kids were happy with the results. I'll try it next week for a sauce I have in mind.
  20. I just bought some King Arthur all purpose flour, but I haven't used it yet. Will it work for pan sauces? And for dredging chicken? Thanks!!
  21. Thanks so much for everyone's replies. I let her know what y'all said. She just started gluten-free on Monday (we had meant to on Saturday, but she wanted to eat at a fair on Sunday), so it's too early to tell. She always gets migraines before her cycle, which I think may not happen for a little while longer since she was in such an incredibly good, helpful...
  22. I have 4 kids (ages 4 - 12), and we've homeschooled from the beginning. The whole socialization argument is really a non-issue. Public schools may help kids learn to socialize with kids their own age, but it doesn't help with interacting with others outside that sphere. (And as adults, we certainly don't only hang out with other 42yo's!) What I love...
  23. My 12yo daughter has just started a gluten-free diet. (I've been on it almost 4 weeks.) One of the reasons is that she gets migraines. They make her VERY tired, dizzy, nauseous, etc. The last one lasted several days. (Fortunately, we homeschool, so we can work around them somewhat.) I know they're hormonally related for her, but our neurologist believes...
  24. Just want to give everyone a BIG THANK YOU!! I'm copying and pasting everything into my grocery list, so I can check them all out. I have enough food for today, so I'm going to Whole Foods tomorrow when my husband is home and can stay with my younger kids. I forgot to mention that I'm on a FODMAP elimination (fructose, lactose, soy, etc) diet as well...
  25. My neurologist suspects I may be gluten intolerant, so I'm going gluten-free for at least 3 months. My 12yo has agreed that it would be a good idea for her to try it, too. She gets migraines and is super sensitive to sounds, smells, and touch (hence the picky eating). Oh, and she remembers EVERYTHING she reads, but in the time it takes for her to get down...
