  1. I had this. Constipated without really knowing it. Mine resulted in constant pain in my lower right side that lasted for months and months. Had various tests and scans to figure out what the pain was. It was stool back up. I was quite surprised! I did and do have a BM every day, but like you, I didn't realize it wasn't normal according to the Bistrol...
  2. You may want to get yourself a dining card. They list what you can and can't eat and talk about CC. There are some by Triumph Dining that are good. They have laminated and one-time use (so your waiter doesn't have to bring it back). My favorite is this one by Cecelias Marketplace since it's color coded: Open Original Shared Link (won't let me link to the...
  3. Canned tuna works. I know Crown Prince and Wild Planet are safe. They also don't have extras added in. If you have access to a microwave, Minute Rice's instant rice in a cup isn't bad for an instant rice.
  4. Peripheral neuropathy is what lead to my diagnosis of celiac. I've had bouts of tingling on and off for 20 years. The last 2 years have been bad. I had carpal tunnel surgery in both wrists due to the intense pain in my arms. (Before I found my current neurologist who was the one who diagnosed me with celiac.) My GI symptoms are relatively mild. When...
  5. I posted the second and third paragraphs on another thread, but thought it applied here. My machine is a model SM-55. I use it 3 - 5 times a week for cookies, crackers, bread, etc. To answer your question, you can certainly mix by hand and get a good workout! LOL! Before the days of appliances, people mixed by hand, so it is possible. It's just MUCH...
  6. My picky kids like Applegate Farms (Sprouts and my local grocery store) and Bell & Evans (Whole Foods). Applegate Farms has directions for cooking them in the microwave, so they're good if you're in a hurry or if you want a kid to be able to make them. My kids hated Hallelujah Farms and Ians.
  7. Just thought I'd mention that you can have neurological problems from gluten and still have B12 levels that are good. Neuro issues are not always due to vitamin deficiencies - I've read this in a couple of places and seen it in myself. If I understand things correctly, the immune system directly attacks the neurological system in this case. (For those...
  8. I'll second this. Brown rice gives me terrible abdominal pain 2 days after I eat it and messes my digestion up for a week or more. White rice doesn't bother me. You may want to try white rice for awhile.
  9. Would you please share the pitfalls you've discovered? I'm new at this, so your experiences could potentially help me avoid them. Thanks!!
  10. The best way to know for sure if it's teff is to buy a bag and eat it by itself. If you don't react to it after a couple of days, then try eating another product that has very few ingredients but include whatever gum Udi's uses. I finally found a muffin mix from Gluten Free pantry that only white rice as the flour. (Brown rice makes me sick.) And I'm using...
  11. After my MIL passed away way too young, my husband and I have hosted Christmas for unmarried BIL and widowed FIL. Christmas was a BIG deal to my MIL, and my husband has baked her recipes every year as a way of remembering her. I'm trying to give myself plenty of time to figure out gluten-free replacements to stuffing, etc. It's the bread and cinnamon...
  12. As a frequent reader of Dr Seuss at bedtime, I love this!! Here's my try: One speck of gluten Shaky, legs tingle, brain fog
  13. I agree with all of the above. Especially since I tend to be in the "doesn't handle change well" category, I can understand your MIL's frustration. However, I don't agree with how she handled the situation. I do think your husband should try to mend the fence, and I'd give her a second chance on the next visit. Maybe with time, she'll adjust better...
  14. When my daughter gets migraines, they often come with dizziness. She has a hard time getting up and down the stairs and has to lie down. Sleeping helps. Our neurologist told us to give her 2 Advil gel caps at the FIRST signs of a migraine (she's 12 and almost adult size). If you wait for the migraine to take hold, it's usually too late to treat it. Oh...
  15. I came late to learning to cook (started at 39). I still have a long way to go, but I'm MUCH better than I used to be! I recommend watching cooking shows. My favorite is America's Test Kitchen on PBS. They show you exactly what to do. You can rent their DVD's through Netflix or buy them and buy their books. I also subscribe to their web site www.cooksillustrated...
  16. I was afraid I'd get answers like these! That's too bad. I guess I'll research the self-cleaning oven idea. I know the ceramics and glaze initially got baked at high temps in the kiln, but I don't know how already-baked glaze reacts to high temps. If there's any risk it'll shatter, I'll just replace my favorites. If I have to give them away, at least...
  17. I used to work for a ceramic cookie stamp company about 13 or 14 years ago (Rycraft). The stamps have a design on the end, and you press them onto rolled up cookie dough, so each cookie ends up with that design on it. The handles are glazed, but the the part you stamp on the cookies is not. We were allowed to take home all the seconds we wanted, so I have...
  18. My kids aren't too happy about the transition, but having the whole house gluten-free sure makes things SO much easier!!! It's just too hard to deal with crumbs and CC when you have younger children in the house! I know another family of 6 who all eat gluten-free at home even though only one of them has celiac. They don't eat as much bread as they used...
  19. It was about 5 years old and had very infrequent use. It had leaked some oil for a little while about a year ago, but the motor still worked and it held up through my husband's Christmas bake-a-thon (pre gluten-free diet) this last Christmas. It got shelved for a few months. I pulled it out again to cook gluten-free, and it didn't last long - motor went...
  20. My kids don't like store-bought gluten-free bread at all, so making it makes more sense to me. I thought about a bread maker, but I have a tiny kitchen and try to avoid appliances unless I get a lot of use out of them. Anyway, I decided it made more sense to just use my mixer since I can also use a mixer for cookies, crackers, cake, etc. Unfortunately...
  21. You may just have to sit in her room with her until she falls asleep. Or get a video baby monitor, so you can watch her at all times until she goes to sleep. If she does it in the morning when she first wakes up, you could move her bed into your room temporarily. All this would be a pain, but hopefully, it'd be temporary. And I hear you on the crumbs...
  22. I totally felt like I lived in my kitchen today! I'm cooking and freezing some stuff for a weekend trip. And getting all the non-perishable food items together. (staying in a beach condo) We live in a large, 100-year-old house, but the people who owned it in the 50's cut the kitchen in half! Turned the other half into a breakfast nook - it's now my sewing...
  23. That's a good point. Hadn't thought of silent celiac. I'll talk to my husband about my daughter continuing on daily gluten for several weeks and then getting blood work. Thing is, my bloodwork was negative, which I understand is common for those with primarily neuro symptoms. I just wonder if my kids would also have false negatives
  24. I'm there with you!!! I would totally eat gluten-free bread, brownies, etc if I could! I am glad in a way that I've been forced to eat much healthier than I have in my whole life, but I don't think treats are such a bad thing. (I know many here would disagree with me!) I've had many times at the grocery store where I get quite frustrated and sad that there...
  25. I would cut out the processed foods. Eat simply until you feel good. Keep a food log of all you eat and your reactions. If you still don't feel good, cut things out until you do (soy, lactose, etc). Keep in mind that a food reaction can take minutes or 3 days to show up - that's where the food log comes in to help you track things. Then, test things...
