ARCHIVED Had Endoscopy Today.....not Hopeful
Ollie's Mom replied to nosy parker's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I totally understand your concerns regarding your doctor. I have my fingers crossed for you, though. I hope he did indeed take a number of biopsies, and I hope you finally get an answer. -
ARCHIVED Study For Vaccine.......help
Ollie's Mom replied to valeriek's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ummm... Why are you supposed to eat gluten, and THEN get the "vaccine"? How is that supposed to work? That's like getting the measles vaccine after you've already had the measles?? I wouldn't do it. -
ARCHIVED Migraines Gone, Headaches Returning.
Ollie's Mom replied to Auntie-Manda's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Since you just cut back on your meds, I'd give your body a week or two to find a new equilibrium. It could just be headaches are a withdrawal symptom of those meds. Or you may have accidentally been cross contaminated (easy to do, especially when first starting the diet). I know headaches can be a drag (I had a headache or migraine constantly for years),... -
ARCHIVED 7 Weeks Pregnant And Glutened
Ollie's Mom replied to GatorGal's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I was really careful when I was pregnant (both times)... Made all my food myself. Aaaaand... My baby brain made me buy the wrong kind of soy sauce at the grocery store. I gluten ed myself several times from the same bottle, and thought I felt like crap because of the pregnancy. Hubby asked one day why we had soy sauce with wheat in it... I couldn't believe... -
ARCHIVED Frustrated And Confused
Ollie's Mom replied to cait's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It was the statement that feeding a child a gluten-free diet and making sure they aren't deficient in vitamins and minerals is a tough balancing act that should only be done under professional supervision that got me. My doctor doesn't know the first thing about diet and nutrition, and the few dieticians I've met weren't much better. Anyone following... -
ARCHIVED Frustrated And Confused
Ollie's Mom replied to cait's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I must respectfully disagree with your doctor. Cereal grains are fortified because otherwise they provide little nutritional value. My 2.5 year old is gluten-free and dairy free. His dinner last night was pork roast, mashed sweet potatoes, broccoli and green beans. Desert was pineapple, blueberries, and a homemade gluten-free peanut butter cookie. That... -
ARCHIVED 5 Year Old - In Testing Stage - Thoughts And Advice
Ollie's Mom replied to brinleys's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If your doctor thinks the blood test is accurate, why is he saying a retest is required? If the doc will diagnose on blood test alone, or blood test with positive response to the diet (including a decrease in antibody levels after being on the gluten-free diet) I'd put her on a gluten-free diet right away. And if the doc won't diagnose and she continues... -
ARCHIVED Eating While Traveling For Work. =(
Ollie's Mom replied to SeekingSarah's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've had much success with hotel restaurants on my work travels. I explain my food limitations, and often they'll make me scrambled eggs and plain roasted potatoes for breakfast since I can't eat their continental breakfast (and I usually get envious looks from other guests!). For lunch, a salad with oil and vinegar on the side, topped with plain chicken... -
ARCHIVED How 'worthy' Is An Official Label?
Ollie's Mom replied to Stern's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There are a number if us here who are "self diagnosed". We know gluten makes us feel awful, and know we feel better without it. Some of us (including me) wouldn't be able to do a gluten challenge to get an official diagnosis anyway. Just a trace of gluten and I'm violently ill for 24 hours, and feel like crap for days after that. My personal opinion is... -
ARCHIVED Do You Wonder What All The Fuss Is About Gmos?
Ollie's Mom replied to GottaSki's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I think it is already too late. I didn't watch the video, so I'm not sure if this gets touched on, but now farmers are dealing with "genetic pollution" Where the pollen (and therefore inserted genetic material) is being spread by insects / wind to what are supposed to be non-gmo crops. Soon, seeds everywhere could be contaminated with all sorts of genes... -
ARCHIVED Can Going Off Gluten Be Dangerous?
Ollie's Mom replied to arocchio's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I only eat cauliflower when it's in season. Same as asparagus. So for many months of the year, I don't have even a trace of these foods. When they're back in season, I can eat them no problem. My husband has gone months eating gluten free, then eats it again if he's out with friends or craves fast food. He does this no problem. But.. I can't touch... -
ARCHIVED High Test Results In Child W/o Symptoms - Is Biopsy Necessary?
Ollie's Mom replied to PLGW2012's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Re: the "gluten allergy" thing, I often say to others that I and my son are "allergic to gluten" because it makes people pay attention. Then instead of them thinking it's not really a severe issue (which they sometimes assume if I say "intolerance), they treat it like a big deal (which, really, it is). So sometimes the use of the incorrect term is intentional... -
ARCHIVED Do I Need To Expect A Shorter Life Span?
Ollie's Mom replied to CrimsonRegret's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh wow. I feel so bad for you. I wish I could call your doctors and yell at them for you. Is there a specific reason you need a formal diagnosis? Would you be willing to live life knowing gluten makes you ill, but not have a definitive diagnosis? I discovered at age 28 that my chronic D (tmi but my food would come out undigested about 2 hrs after... -
ARCHIVED Is My Self Diagnosis Correct?
Ollie's Mom replied to SadPastaLover's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I second this. One of my symptoms of being glutened is acne on my face and back. The really deep, painful kind. they last for weeks and weeks. Awful reminders of an even minor slip up on my part. -
ARCHIVED 22 Month Old Diagnosed With Celiac
Ollie's Mom replied to Ryansmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Argh, the doc had you put your little guy on a gluten-free diet *before* the endoscopy? for the best chance at a positive biopsy, he would have needed to be on a full gluten diet leading up to testing. Will the doc diagnose based on blood work alone, regardless of biopsy result? -
ARCHIVED Is It Normal To Lose Weight On gluten-free Diet?
Ollie's Mom replied to Worried mommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I lost weight for the first three weeks or so, in spite of being ravenous and eating as much as I could. And I was very thin to start with. Then my weight stabilized. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge Results: Opinions Needed
Ollie's Mom replied to mark77nj's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My son was getting tons of "mystery" fevers. Sometimes as high as 103+. They all disappeared after we removed gluten from his diet. A fever just means your immune system is ramping up a response to something. It doesn't necessarily means that something has to be viral. Sounds to me like the gluten challenge confirms a gluten issue. I think the fact... -
Wow.. Just wow. I would look for another doctor who would diagnose based on symptoms and resolution of said symptoms on the gluten-free diet. I am with the PPs - I can't imagine any doctor being willing to subject a toddler to such severe reactions and hospitalization by giving the child the thing that the doctor already knows makes that child sick. It is...

ARCHIVED Toddler Has Celiacs?
Ollie's Mom replied to JJmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I know the daycare is saying they're being careful (and I am sure they're trying) but trust me, your daughter is definitely being exposed to cross contamination. If there are other kids in the same room eating gluten foods, there are crmbs everywhere. And my son has been known to snatch bits of crackers and cookies off the floor and pop them in his mouth... -
ARCHIVED New And Upset After First Appointment
Ollie's Mom replied to EmmKat's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sure. I don't work for or own any of these places, so we're all good I guess. :-) Riz Restaurant - on bayview Ave just south of eglinton. Pan Asian cuisine. This is my favourite place. They really cater to those requiring gluten-free food. The plates actually say "gluten free" right on them. They even have an all you can eat gluten-free menu. Gluten... -
ARCHIVED New And Upset After First Appointment
Ollie's Mom replied to EmmKat's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I also live in Toronto and just wanted to say, to any American neighbours reading this, that although OHIP does have limitations, I am content with the medical services available to me and my family. The lack of coverage for celiac blood tests is one of those aggravations, but it is one I'm happy to live with given the overall pluses associated with our... -
ARCHIVED My 8 Year Old Symptoms, Testing, Needs Advice
Ollie's Mom replied to Worried mommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Are you in Canada? Smarties in the US are like Rockets candies in Canada. -
ARCHIVED Question For Any Jewish People Here...
Ollie's Mom replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Maybe it is my own ignorance regarding the Jewish faith, but wouldn't even Orthodox rabbis allow some latitude to those who have a medical condition? I have some Muslim friends, and they do not need to fast during Ramadan if they have a medical condition that would make fasting worsen their condition. I just assumed all religions had the same sorts of... -
ARCHIVED Please Help With Lab Results. 6 Yr Old
Ollie's Mom replied to radish's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
To me, it looks like the doc was screening your daughter for ulcerative colitis, and the "ANCA" test result was abnormal (with a note saying 50-70% of patients with ulcerative colitis have abnormal ANCA values). But I'm not entirely sure her result was abnormal, or if they just put that note on the lab results report. I did a quick Google search, and...
