ARCHIVED What Is Your Ethnic Origin?
Emme999 replied to Emme999's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Okay, this is from Gastroenterology Online - April 2005 Open Original Shared Link The proportion of people in a population who have celiac disease at a specified time (prevalence rate) depends of course on definition of the disease. Figure 3 illustrates prevalence of preclinical (latent), undiagnosed (largely silent), and diagnosed (mostly active) celiac... -

This is from the page: Open Original Shared Link It's an article written in June 2003. I'll keep looking for something more recent Celiac disease is a disorder of Caucasians. It affects females slightly more often than males. It appears to be almost non-existent in African and Asian populations. It does occur in Asia among the populations of Indo... -

Thanks celiac3270!! Wow, so many Scandinavians, Germans, and Irish! I will have to tell my friend about this - his last name is "O'Conner" and when I told him about some of the symptoms associated with Celiac he said, "Hmm... Maybe I should be tested! I have a lot of those!" With a name like O'Conner.. Maybe he should! -
Yup. Definitely possible. According to the book "Dangerous Grains" (which deals primarily with Celiac & Gluten Sensitivity): "Obesity is another warning sign that gluten may be at the root of your difficulties. Despite the long standing perception that celiac disease leads to frail, wasting, undernourished individuals, there are more obese and...

Emme999 replied to Saw's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello I just wanted to comment on a couple of things: Gene Testing - A couple of weeks ago I went to listen to a gastroenterologist speaking on celiac disease. His take on the genetic testing was that it can only show if you *don't* have celiac disease. He said that two genes tested (HLA-DQ2 & HLA-DQ8) are actually quite common. If... -

Does anyone know of any good links concernng the epidemiology of Celiac Disease? I know there is a high rate of this disease in Irish & Scandinavian lines, but can't remember where I read that.. I think it's really interesting that we've seen a lot of both of those already listed in these posts. And I think it's cool that there are people... -

BTW - I'm a Danish/German mix Blonde hair, blue-green eyes. Square face shape though! And fortunately not greying yet -
After reviewing my "Celiac Info Packet" mommida commented on my last name (shown in my email address): Larsen. She said something about being of Scandinavian descent and the higher incidence of celiac disease in those countries (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands). So - I'm wondering how many people in the forum are from Scandinavian...

LOL Ha ha ha ha HA ha ha ha ha ha Oh! I can't breathe..! I can't think of a time (recently) when I *haven't* had major stress. Dad's bi-polar (and we had to take him to the hospital this week because he has pneumonia), boyfriend is paralyzed (well, he was when I met him too so it shouldn't upset me - but it *does*!), finished finals yesterday...

ARCHIVED Endomysial Vs. Transglutaminase Test
Emme999 replied to Dcoughli's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Here's a little info on the tests: The tTG is extremely sensitive. This is from the book "Dangerous Grains" (my fav. book to quote ) "The tTG test usually identifies about 98% of those who have celiac disease, and it is a very specific test that can be used to rule out celiac disease in 95% of patients. This test appears to be superior to endomysium... -
Hello I just put together a little 4 page info packet that I'm going to send to relatives. Please email me if you would be willing to look it over. I'd love to have some thoughts on it by people who know the disease intimately Thanks! - Michelle

Help! I am suddenly having the worst allergies of my life (due to grass, pollen, whatever). It's really bad - my throat gets tight and I can hardly swallow, even when inside. There's also a whole lot of that gross stuff draining down my throat. What I want to know is: Is this related to Celiac? I've never really had allergies before, but now I can...

Eggs showed up on my allergy test - but I can't tell if anything is happening when I eat them. I'm seriously wondering if I have any feeling in my stomach... supposedly I'm allergic to lots of things but I can never tell! If it weren't for the ELISA allergy testing, I would have no clue!

ARCHIVED Identical Protein Sequence In Candida & Wheat
Emme999 replied to Emme999's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I took the article to my doctor (general practitioner) and she really appreciated it. It's a good resource because it actually documents medical journals. I *still* have a candida infection and am wondering if the gluten free diet is really doing that much good while I have it I mean... I do feel better, but if your body recognizes candida (with an... -

I was just looking at the site and saw that someone suggested a book by Paul Pitchford (Healing with Whole Foods). That's a great book, but not for Celiac!!!! I was looking through it last night and he suggests that people with Celiac Disease eat spelt and oats. Yikes. I managed a health food store for almost 2 years and we actually sold "The Cure... -

Hey my doctor called me today to discuss the biopsy: Him: "So, you were thinking that you had Celiac Sprue..?" Me: Yes.. Him: "Well... You're right!" Me: So how damaged are the villi? ARCHIVED Gluten Free Dog Food?
Emme999 replied to KaitiUSA's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hey Kaiti! You are in luck! The spring issue of "Living Without" had an article called "Food that's fit for a dog." It's just a little write up about how gluten can irritate the GI tract of dogs too. Anyway, at the end of the article they had some suggestion: Wellness - a line of wheat-free dry & canned foods sold at specialty stores... -
