  1. Being gluten-free has made no dent in my absolute horrible eyesight...but I did have an eye doctor tell me that he's seen patients actually have their eyesight improve when they hit their early-40s. I've got my fingers crossed this will happen to me -- even a tiny improvement would be great!
  2. After all your thought and effort how will he not be stunned/happy/etc? He may not show it but my hubby, who is Mr. Stoic, just loves it when I put time and attention into his gifts -- they don't have to be expensive but just show some thought and effort. Your list of prezzies is impressive and along with a great home-cooked meal...he's going to LOVE LOVE...
  3. Hmmmmm, I've taken Singulair for almost 9 years for a dust allergy I developed post-pregnancy. If I don't take it I can feel it...asthma-like symptoms. Yikes!
  4. Since summer is rapidly approaching I figured I'm not the only one thinking about books to read on vacation...or shows to watch. I'm working my way through The Pirate's Daughter by Margaret Cezair-Thompson -- a fictional account of Errol Flynn and his time in Jamaica (starting in 1946 and it includes an illegitimate love child, etc.) My hubby gave it to...

ARCHIVED Doctors Who Have No Clue

Yep, she even mentioned that as my body sorts itself out it would very likely become unnecessary in time. As for discontinuation syndrome...had that experience when a doctor here in Poland tapered me off an anxiety med (prescribed prior to Celiac diagnosis when they were all telling me it was all "in my head" and there wasn't anything actually wrong...

ARCHIVED Doctors Who Have No Clue

Update...I started on 10mg of amitriptyline on Friday evening last week and so far, no terrible side effects (slept like the dead the first two nights but last night it wasn't so coma-inducing!). Best thing is, it has made a dent in the pain; I even went for a short hike on Saturday afternoon and wasn't completely wrecked at the end! I saw my usual gastro...
  7. The doctors misdiagnosed me with GERD problems versus Celiac. Took months and lots of different medicines (none of which worked) before they thought outside that box. If I get glutened I get the worst reflux symptoms and they last for about 24-36 hours. You mentioned coffee sets it off. Do other drinks with caffeine do the same? Caffeine can cause problems...
  8. So, now that it has finally warmed up and EVERYTHING is in bloom -- seriously, it is as if the plants all just exploded -- there is pollen everywhere. You can see it as a film coating the porch, the cars, the fence, etc. For the last couple of years this has absolutely killed me...stuffy head, cough, scratchy eyes, setting off my dust allergy (bronchial spasms...

    ARCHIVED Healing

Welcome to the forum! The healing process can vary from person to person...some people seem to take days to feel better while some of us (ahem, me included) take much longer. I am 8+ months gluten-free and still dealing with some issues (abdo pain is my main one right now.) At the beginning I swore it felt like two steps forward, one step back. I also...
  10. Just realize that you might have more side effects from some of the malaria meds than others. A friend of mine was living in Cameroon and she had to go through several meds until she found one that didn't make her feel cruddy. Of course it was the most expensive one!
  11. Awwww, I'm so sorry. We've all been there and it is really tough. It does get easier over time but this feeling has reared its ugly on me at totally unexpected times...I was reading a novel about a cooking competition and I almost couldn't finish it! Anyway, come and vent here. You are among friends.
  12. We're thinking Hawaii for a family vacation next year (yes, we plan ahead.) This is great info...thanks!
  13. Welcomes! You've come to the right place for support, information, recipes, pep talks, a chance to vent when you need to, etc. Check out this stellar post, on the "Coping With" forum...wish I'd seen this right after my diagnosis. It would have made life soooooo much easier/better.
  14. Hehehe. Some days it feels like I can't catch a break anywhere anytime. Napkins are pretty flimsy here -- but TESCO has some decent ones. I'll have to test them in water!
  15. Great idea. I'll just have to have my mother send me some good American paper towels. The Polish ones shred when they get wet...!

ARCHIVED Doctors Who Have No Clue

Oops, sorry if I came across curtly. Blame it on exhaustion. You always provide amazing and useful information and I am always thankful for it. I realize you weren't trying to dissuade me. I'm just tired of sitting around waiting while the doctors scratch their heads and dither. I want to try something. Anything. Maybe it will help!!!

I'm willing to try it...would be such a relief to find something that helps at this point!

ARCHIVED Doctors Who Have No Clue

Yep, I've read all about it and maybe it just proves how desperate I feel at this time that I'm willing to try it. I also know a couple people who've taken it and not had any bad side effect issues...I just need something to get me through the next 2-3 months until I am back in the States. And something that helps me sleep would be welcome at this point because...

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm going to ask the doctor about it -- who knows what she'll say.

ARCHIVED Doctors Who Have No Clue

Yep, the pain is constant but increases at times. Sometimes it is worse after eating...sometimes not. I've tried to track it to what I'm eating and haven't had much luck other than the brown rice idea. When I was scoped in August 2011 for my biopsy my tummy was pink and happy -- totally normal. At least that is what the doctor said and what is in my report...

Yep, that sounds about right for the location.
  22. I'm looking at a long trip from E. Europe to the West Coast of the United States in a couple of months -- probably 24 hours travel time, at least 3 flights. I was just wondering what you all use to keep your hands clean if you can't get to soap and water...I'm remembering a flight to Asia where we hit major turbulence and were locked in our seats for a long...

ARCHIVED Doctors Who Have No Clue

The issue is the pain is ever-present, it just worsens at times. Very frustrating. I'm totally willing to go with the functional pain idea if anyone would actually be willing to treat it...they all want to take a wait and see approach before they give me TCAs. I think they hope it will either go away OR I will!

ARCHIVED Doctors Who Have No Clue

Yep, I've thought of this. Gluten is everywhere in this country...seriously EVERYWHERE. I've been glutened by plain white rice...could not figure out why I was feeling so cruddy until I realized that it was a different brand of rice and the same company sells a lot of barley (another staple in the Polish diet!) and barley products. I figure it was cross-contamination...
