  1. Has anyone ever been to the University of MD Center for Celiac Research? Heard anything about them? When I return to the States at the end of June I'll be in the Washington DC area and am considering getting an appointment here to have them review my files/case.
  2. Actually it does help because it reminds me that not every little twinge (or not so little in this case) is necessarily related to Celiac. I did have more abdominal pain prior to my diagnosis but that was below my ribs down to near my belly button -- it felt inflamed all the time and I didn't want anything touching it. It hurt to ride in a car on a bumpy...
  3. On the left side, starting right below my breast, next to my ribs, from below my sternum and down. Sometimes it seems to wander over to the right but it never happens only on the right side. No mention of a HIDA scan. They said nothing showed up on the CT scan and they don't think it is my gallbladder. Sigh. I'm in Poland and they are great with diagnostics...
  4. So, almost 8 months gluten-free and most of my symptoms have improved, some drastically. My 6 month blood tests show a noticeable drop in antibodies; I am not in the 'normal' or negative range yet but I'm getting awful close. My doctors are really happy about the progress I've made as am I. The only two things that still are an issue are (1) sleep problems...
  5. Is it the doctor from Texas who's a CHIROPRACTOR but making a name for himself with treating Celiac disease? The one who wants oodles of $$ for you to sign up to "get more info" from his website? *sputter* I'd say trust your body and its responses over what this guy says...if you don't have a problem tolerating gluten-free grains then don't worry about...

    ARCHIVED IHOP

I'm in Poland and I haven't been able to easily find bacon, sausages, ham, lunch meats or hot dogs that are gluten free. I have found sausage a couple of times at one of the natural food stores but it was ridiculously expensive and tasted wretched! Add to that the fact that they add flavoringsbroths (which contain gluten) to fresh meats here and I'm on a...

    ARCHIVED Berlin?

Thanks so much! Looks like the trip is postponed until early May...more time to prepare!
  8. I had a phase of acne after going gluten free -- it passed within about 3 weeks. It was worse than it had been since I was a teenager...I chose to look at it as my body freaking out in one more way. Now, after 7.5 months gluten free my skin is looking better than it has in a couple of years -- I've actually had people comment on it and that NEVER used to...

    ARCHIVED Berlin?

My hubby has decided we should take a trip to Berlin (yes, the one in Germany.) Just wondering if anyone has been? Tips? Where to find gluten-free foods? Restaurant recommendations? Thanks.
  10. I thought a positive biopsy was the "gold standard" for diagnosing Celiac Disease...or at least that is what my doctor told me! She also told me that it would be a minimum of 3 months of being on the gluten-free diet (very strictly) before I could feel any improvement and it was more likely to be 6-12 months to really notice any significant change. For...
  11. *virtual hug* Wish I could do more -- once you get caught in that worrying loop it is hard to break out of it. Do something for yourself that will help take your mind off it if at all possible...take a walk, talk to a friend, splurge on something small (my vice was a type of gluten-free lotion that smelled wonderful; just rubbing a bit into my hands...
  12. Yikes! Sorry you aren't feeling well. Stomach bugs are the worst...I haven't had any stomach bug issues since my diagnosis (only 7 months ago) but I've weathered many different stomach viruses while living overseas. The ones in Russia were the worst -- other than Giardia they were always viral and I was always sick (diarrhea, cramping, gas, etc.) for 7-1...
  13. Have loved Goya products for years and I found this while I was online this weekend. It doesn't have a date (bummer) but it is really clear as to ingredients and possible cross-contamination. At least it gives you a good place to start. I am impressed and why can't other companies be as clear and concise!?!?! Open Original Shared Link
  14. I use and love Andalou products (lotion, shampoo, facial cleansers, etc.) I order it off their website -- shipping is not cheap but once you place your first order they'll send you emails notices of sales, etc. When they have a special with free shipping I try to stock up! I've also used the Neutrogena Naturals line successfully.

    ARCHIVED Coming Appointment

When you discuss the symptoms you might want to mention which ones seem to be "worst," have lasted the longest or impact your life the most. Also, to what degree do they impact your life? For example, I spent months telling my doctors I was having pain issues but it was only after I said, "Some days my pain is at 8 or 9 out of 10 on a scale of 1 to 10 and...
  16. Mine seemed to trigger after a particularly nasty virus -- thought it was just a stomach flu at the time but it laid me out for days. Three weeks later the slippery slope of symptoms began. I think I was lucky to be diagnosed in less than a year. I was fine up until I caught that virus.
  17. Oh, thanks for sharing. Very interesting. I know about the local gluten free products -- they make a lot with gluten free wheat starch which I can't have (tried it once by accident and was miserable.) I stick to Schar since I can find it at the bio store close to my house and the pasta sometimes shows up at Carrefour. I'm not eating much in the way of gluten...
  18. Yolo -- consider yourself lucky with grocery selections! I haven't noticed squash in at least a couple of months in the stores or the outdoor markets (but to be honest I have not trekked all over looking for the them.) I'm hitting Carrefour this morning and maybe they'll have some. They never have yummy ones like acorn squash...I feel lucky when I can find...
  19. Thanks for the responses. I'm feeling a bit better today...recovering from the glutening so the pain has decreased a bit plus the venting helped! It was extra hard this time around since we'd just had such a successful trip to Italy -- I ate chicken, pork and beef there and had NO PROBLEMS! Ah, the joys of Western Europe! I do have some canned tuna...
  20. I have tried 3 different mixes (brownies, cornbread and pizza crust) from BRM and each time I've felt cruddy the next day although it wasn't a full glutening type of feeling. The instance were all spaced apart (several days or even weeks) and the BRM product was the only new thing I tried. I now avoid the brand.
  21. Maybe gluten withdrawal? I know I felt much worse those first few weeks when I went off gluten...for me it cleared up a couple of weeks after it started. You could try melatonin (it helped me for a while but now doesn't really do anything for me!) Just make sure it is gluten-free!
  22. I'm just having a couple really rough days...tried some chicken on Saturday night from supposedly one of the best butchers in town and had a major reaction to it. Plain old chicken breasts that I baked and I've paid for it with insomnia, anxiety and extreme pain plus the fun shakey feeling I get in my limbs. Strangely enough no GI symptoms this time around...
  23. FYI, when I was diagnosed last August I found out that Penzey's Spices are all gluten free including all their blends. The only thing they said wasn't gluten free was their soup stock bases which are produced by another supplier. I was so happy I didn't have to pitch any of my spices (although I did replace all the ones that I used for baking and recipes...
  24. I'm so sorry you're having a tough time. I wish I could offer words of wisdom but I am a newbie (diagnosed only about 7 months ago.) I honestly think that for me being gluten-free is going to be an ongoing mourning period where I am ok most of the time but every once in a while it smacks me in the face and I feel frustration, regret, anger, whatever. I also...
  25. I've spent many years living in SE Asia...so I have a rice cooker/steamer and would not give it up for anything. I like being able to just dump the rice and water in, hit the button and ignore it. I know how long the cycles take so it is really easy to work it into meal prep. I actually broke my old one (I'd had it for 20+ years) and had to replace it and...
