  1. I'll probably try it again in a few months just to see if I have the same reaction...
  2. Thanks for all the replies...Ingredients are listed as: whole grain brown rice flour, potato starch, whole grain millet, whole grain sorghum flour, tapioca flour, potato flour, evaporated cane juice, xanthan gum, active dry yeast, sea salt, guar gum. I'm 5 months into the gluten-free diet and I've only just started to introduce some replacement foods....
  3. I've taken peanut butter, hard boiled eggs, Kind bars, chicken (I ate that first thing or you can freeze it for a long haul trip and let it thaw), small amounts of sliced hard cheeses, etc. Having protein is a big help! Also, crackers and/or something sweet for treats. I've packed everything either in ziploc bags in individual serving sizes or in tiny see...
  4. How frustrating...and I'm surprised the pharmacist asked you that question...really not any of their business, right?!?! Do you have another pharmacy option? My main pharmacy has been excellent -- when I called after diagnosis to check on the meds I was currently on (I have a dust allergy that manifests with asthma-like symptoms) they were happy to check...
  5. I haven't been to Croatia...it is on the list of places I want to visit but we're running out of time and available school vacations! I think the closer you are to the Mediterranean the easier it is to eat gluten-free -- the cuisine is just more naturally tilted to fresh and gluten free (Greece was super-easy with lots of amazing grilled fish and yummy veggie...
  6. Congrats! I didn't have hair loss as a symptom but I did notice just this morning that my fingernails are no longer flaking and tearing like they used to, they are much much stronger than they used to be and they are growing much faster. So cool!
  7. For the first time I tried Bob's Red Mill Pizza Crust mix on Sunday night...woke up feeling bleh on Monday morning and had pain issues throughout the day, didn't sleep well last night and am really tired today. Seems like a glutening but the ONLY thing different or new that I've had in my diet over the last few days is one slice of pizza made from that mix...
  8. I was in Athens in November 2011 -- only 2.5 months after diagnosis! I had the Triumph dining cards and they were invaluable. A lot of Greek cuisine is naturally gluten free anyway so as long as he likes grilled meats (I ate a lot of fish but also had chicken and pork) and veggie dishes he'll probably be ok. I found that most restaurants we went to were used...
  9. I also had a lot of what I affectionately called my "gut gurgle" until I started taking a probiotic. As long as I take it I am fine -- if I forget (like I did last night!) the gurgle and gas comes right back and takes a few days to settle down. Sigh. I take Nature's Bounty Acidophilus with Bifidum -- it is a chewable with a decent taste (strawberry flavor...
  10. I'm in Poland and there are many products that include this ingredient - I tried one by accident (I was new to the diet and trying different products from the big Polish gluten free company -- it turned out to be a good way to learn the lesson to read labels closely, EVERY TIME!) and had a full-on reaction. If I remember properly, in the EU following...
  11. Everyone is going to have a different answer...depends on symptoms, extent of damage, how quickly your body recovers, how strictly you follow the diet, any accidental glutenings, etc. I am almost 5 months into the diet and while I am definitely improving I am certainly not 100%. Words of wisdom that were passed from these forums (thank you IrishHeart...
  12. We're winding down our time in Europe and took a last minute ski trip to Slovakia this past week. We weren't in Bratislava (the situation might be better there) but in the mountains at a resort and eating gluten-free was just about impossible. Menus had very few items that I would even consider and servers had no idea when I would bring up the gluten issue...
  13. Skylark beat me to it! I loved that crockpot365 site before I was ever diagnosed with Celiac Disease -- as a working mom it totally saved me time and energy since the woman who writes it hates spending a lot of time prepping ingredients. She just wants to dump stuff in the crockpot and forget about it until it is time to eat. Her cookbooks are good too and...
  14. One of the main symptoms I get when glutened is reflux (for 6 months before my diagnosis the doctors were trying to tell me it was ALL reflux...not until I lost 20+ lbs in a handful of weeks without trying did they want to think it anything else!) So between pregnancy and a glutening it could explain the reflux.
  15. Hehehehehehe! I guess it is all relative, isn't it?
  16. My sister-in-law came across this bakery at a farmer's market outside Asheville, NC. She picked up some of their scones to try and only after eating them found out all their baked goods are gluten free (not an issue for her so she wasn't paying any attention.) She sent me their info and I ordered a couple mixes because I am not big on baking (that may change...
  17. For me it is a combination of "a wispy cloud that moves in when glutened" and "a short term memory problem that is constant" -- both of these symptoms fade away once I'm off gluten. When I was at my worst the couple of months before diagnosis I had absolutely no recollection of lots of things that were said to me. Scary to look back at that time (and it was...
  18. Thanks for the responses. I'll hold on to them and once I'm further along in the healing process I'll try one as a 'test.' Or I'll just serve them at parties or potlucks with gluten eaters so it isn't a problem!
  19. Great news to hear...and one less medicine to take, yay!
  20. I've always been a label reader and tried to avoid heavily processed foods. When I was first diagnosed in August all the people around me (basically my in-laws since we were visiting them when the biopsy results came back!) went on and on about how sad they were for me, etc. because of all I wouldn't be able to eat any longer. At the same time I was looking...
  21. I received several boxes of Amy's Shortbread Cookies (Classic and Almond) as a gift. The boxes say Gluten Free but reading the fine print it has that disclaimer of being made in a factory with wheat and some other possible allergens. I am finally starting to feel better after 4+ months gluten-free and I honestly don't know if I should try these or not. I...
  22. I am happy with my first gluten-free Christmas efforts -- turkey, stuffing (finally found a way to use up that Ener-G bread I bought when first diagnosed and didn't know better!), veggies, mashed potatoes and gravy, and cornbread. Only the dessert was store-bought and gluten-filled for my husband and daughter; I had made gluten-free brownies but was full...
  23. What I found with birth control pills is you might have to stick to the 'name brand' versus the generic forms of the pills because the generics aren't always listed as gluten free. Your pharmacist should be able to check for you -- mine had access to a database and could look up the ingredients. My file is flagged as Celiac so they know not to dispense anything...
  24. Does this info from the Coeliac UK organization help? Open Original Shared Link Can you call the manufacturer? When in doubt, that's what I try to do.
  25. I was a huge fan of Penzey's spices before my diagnosis and called the company almost in tears at the thought that I'd have to throw away my entire cabinet of spices. They told me that all their spices and blends (their chili and taco blends are huge favorites in my house!) are gluten free. In fact, the only items they said they offer that aren't gluten free...
