And be careful with 'generic' prescriptions. For one of the medicines (birth control pills) I take the name brand is gluten free but at least a couple of the generics aren't. For maintenance drugs like this I use a mail order pharmacy and they were really responsive -- the pharmacist I spoke with on the phone was really attentive and understood the whole...

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Have These Symptoms
BabsV replied to dressagegal1986's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I also have GERD (reflux) symptoms although my scope showed no damage to stomach and esophagus. The doctor has me on Prilosec tablets (20mg omeprazole) -- one in the morning and one in the evening. It definitely seems to help and the doctor hopes that as I heal I'll stop needing the Prilosec. In addition to following the gluten-free diet I'm also following... -
Does anyone have a gluten-free hand lotion/cream they'd recommend? With winter coming on and me washing my hands a bazillion times a day I'm going to need one!

ARCHIVED Ttg Improved But Symptoms Not
BabsV replied to adevers's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Wow, I'm so sorry for your daughter. I am so not an expert but I can share my story. One of my main symptoms of Celiac Disease was intense abdominal pain -- prior to my Celiac diagnosis I had two doctors agree it was a 'functional' pain issue and they put me on anti-anxiety medicines (one made me horribly ill as it interacted with another medicine I was on... -

				ARCHIVED gluten-free Birth Control Pill?
BabsV replied to teamworkjr's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm now on Ortho Tri-Cyclen -- I was on the generic version (TriPrevifem or something like that) and the manufacturer said there was no gluten in the ingredients BUT they couldn't confirm it was gluten free. So back to the name brand which costs much more. My pharmacist is hunting to see if one of the other generics is gluten free. We shall see. -

				ARCHIVED Flu Shot Poll
BabsV replied to Gemini's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
After have a really bad case of the flu almost 20 years ago I always get the flu shot. Always. It makes a difference for me. I have a history of severe bronchitis and other respiratory issues so once I was diagnosed with Celiac (that was only 2 months ago) the doctor strongly urged me get the pneumonia vaccine. I had it this week and wow was it painful... -

ARCHIVED Good Days & Bad Days -- Is This Normal?
BabsV replied to BabsV's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Wow. Thank you for sharing your story. I'm so glad to hear that you've resolved so many of your health issues. Thank you also for the support. It really does help as I go through the process of being a newbie! So far, so good with the changes I've made. The smaller amounts of protein several times a day is working really well -- I feel like I have a... -

ARCHIVED Good Days & Bad Days -- Is This Normal?
BabsV replied to BabsV's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Again, thanks for all the great info and guidance on what to watch for. I was drinking fresh fruit juice (trying to get more vitamins and minerals) and have cut it out completely. That actually seems to be helping in terms of burning and pain issues. Also, in looking back at my less-than-detailed food diary I realized I was clumping together my proteins and... -

				ARCHIVED What To Do?
BabsV replied to suziq0805's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If she's scheduled for nissen fundiplication surgery I'd say urge for a blood test just to makes sure the surgery is necessary! I had a sliding hiatus hernia that had to be repaired this way and even though the surgery was laparoscopic it was MAJOR surgery. It knocked me low for weeks, it was almost 3 months before I felt anything near full strength, and... -

ARCHIVED Good Days & Bad Days -- Is This Normal?
BabsV replied to BabsV's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Oops, forgot to say that the raw apples/corn/beans cause much more pain plus lots of noisy gut (something I never had before diagnosis!) -- it was as if my body was having to work much much harder to try to digest them. It is killing me because beans are a favorite of mine but just not something that I'm tolerating right now. It is even worse than not having... -

ARCHIVED Good Days & Bad Days -- Is This Normal?
BabsV replied to BabsV's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hmmm, I always have the fatigue and brain fog (which honestly have improved a bit since starting the diet...) but the pain is the main issue that seems to get better or worse depending on the day. It isn't nearly as debilitating/exhausting as it was prior to diagnosis but it is still present and impacts my life to a bigger extent. On the days I have the abdominal... -

ARCHIVED Good Days & Bad Days -- Is This Normal?
BabsV replied to BabsV's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thanks again for your kind words, it really does help. I'm sticking to the diet, staying hydrated, taking my vitamins (gluten free ones!), resting as much as needed and taking the dog out every day for at least a 45 minute walk. Also working on meditation and considering CBT for dealing with the continuing pain issues -- want to give the diet a bit... -

ARCHIVED Good Days & Bad Days -- Is This Normal?
BabsV posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
So, I'm almost 2 months into the gluten free diet. Before my Celiac diagnosis every day was a bad day in terms of pain, fatigue and brain fog. After a few weeks I started having some good days in between the bad days, then it became every other day being a good day...now sometimes I have 2-3 in a row before having a bad day (although to be fair, a bad... -

				ARCHIVED Body Products
BabsV replied to Sam'sMom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This has been really helpful...I'm still figuring this all out also as I'm only 2 months into the whole gluten free adventure. I had bought a bunch of Andalou products as a treat to myself just prior to diagnosis...happy to find out that they are gluten free. The lotions are really really nice and not greasy. You can order online. Also just saw 'Neutrogena... -

I'm so sorry. That has to be so very disappointing. I really hope you are feeling better soon. -
Thanks. I've poked around an apparently gluten-free items are available at health food stores and pharmacies. Turns out there's a supermarket right by the flat we'll be in. This should be do-able!

				ARCHIVED Gerd Vs. Celiac
BabsV replied to Duhlina's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
OMG! I had doctors telling me for 6 months that I had GERD and treating me with all sorts of PPIs and other meds that made me dizzy and gave me insomnia. I finally ran everything by a new doctor who threw out the blood tests as "tests of exclusion" -- he TOLD me they'd be negative but he thought they should be done to 'prove' it wasn't a gluten issue. Imagine... -
