Congrats on a diagnosis. Isn't it nice to know that you aren't crazy and that those antidepressants the docs wanted to put you on wouldn't have helped. Or at least that was how I felt after a few months and bunches of dollars spent on tests! I can tell you my wicked GERD symptoms finally did subside but it took several months gluten-free to get to that...

ARCHIVED What Does Chicken Cost In Your Area?
BabsV replied to Jestgar's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I was at BJs (Alexandria VA) this morning and remembered this question so paid close attention to current prices: Perdue Chickens (whole) = $1.99/lb Perdue Chicken breasts (boneless, skinless) = $3.99/lb Perdue Chicken thighs (boneless/skinless) = $2.99/lb Perdue Chicken tenderloins = $2.89/lb (yes I triple-checked that because I didn't believe it!... -

ARCHIVED Target Brand Cough And Cold Medicine
BabsV posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So, my DD brought home the first cold of the season which equaled sniffles for her and plague for me! But it did mean that I could break into my just purchased stash of medicines and I've got to say the Target Adult Cough and Cold stuff has been a life-saver. Even better...it is labelled gluten-free and I've been taking it for several days with no problem... -

				ARCHIVED Help With Canned Beans!
BabsV replied to seeking-wholeness's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My nutritionist recommends Eden...but I'm now off all beans which is a great tragedy in my life. *sob* She says I can trial them again in about 6 months. But on a positive note, dropping beans and corn seem to be helping with the pain issues I continued to have after going gluten-free! -
Oh oh oh oh oh! I know I listed this one near the beginning of this thread -- that book cracked me. I listened to it on audiobook (read by the author!) while walking the dog and I'm sure there are some people back in Poland convinced I am unstable since I'd cackle as I wandered through the park! Now that we're back in the States I am taking every advantage...

				ARCHIVED Anyone Live/travel In Singapore?
BabsV replied to jasonD2's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I'd be careful in Singapore...my parents lived there for several yeasr (this was prior to my diagnosis) and 'stall food' was hugely popular but it almost always contained soy sauce (and I'm pretty sure it wasn't gluten-free soy sauce considering the vast amounts used!) I think you'll do better to stick to the nicer restaurants but you probably want to phone... -
I've just got to rave a bit about the nutritionist I stumbled across while searching for one who would be close to where we would be living when we moved back to the States this summer. I was lucky enough to find Cheryl Harris, who I have now learned has an amazing reputation in the Washington DC area. I've got to say it is well-deserved if my experience...

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Have A Good Avocado Fudge Recipe
BabsV replied to BabsV's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Oh thanks! I did find the fudge recipe I was looking for eventually...it is hardening in the fridge and we'll try it this evening! -
Once you get to Italy it will be no problem...but the international flights are a pain. The last international trip I took (24+ hours of travel time door-to-door) I took my Kindle and a backpack full of food! I had apples slices, carrot and celery sticks, beef jerky, some gluten-free cookies, peanut M&Ms, Kind bars, hard boiled eggs (for first thing...

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Have A Good Avocado Fudge Recipe
BabsV posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I found one that sounded good but can't find it now...argh! There are so many out there when you search on it...wondering if anyone has one they've found to be good. -
He is indeed. I almost asked to get a photo with him BUT with the team doctor, the medical resident and my dear hubby also in the room it seemed a little on the fangirl side to do so! Hehehehe.

Yes, I am woefully behind in getting this info posted. Sorry. After what I considered substandard care post-diagnosis I decided I would see a specialist when we returned to live in the U.S. I was happy to find that Dr. Fasano was about an hour away from where we'd be living so made an appointment. I called in April and was able to get an appointment on...

				ARCHIVED Do You Buy Kraft?
BabsV replied to scarlet-willow's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've been using Kraft projects since I returned to the States in June and haven't noticed any problems that I can pinpoint -- and I've been slowly adding in one new food at a time so I can monitor possible reactions. -

I've got chicken marinating for a new (to me at least) recipe... Buttermilk Chicken. 3.5lbs chicken pieces (bone in, skin on) 2 cups buttermilk 2 tablespoons fresh chopped dill zest of 1 lemon salt & pepper Marinate at least 8 hours...up to 24. Discard marinade. Bake at 450 degrees F until cooked through. I bought chicken on sale and... -

				ARCHIVED R.i.p Kindle....
BabsV replied to ~**caselynn**~'s topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Um, I've got 12 checked out right now! I got the Kindle for when we are overseas and there is no public library available. Plus for vacations because luggage weight restrictions put a huge dent in my reading material options while on the beach, etc! -
One of my friends sends me cookbooks every year for my birthday -- this year she sent me RIVER COTTAGE VEG EVERYDAY and I love love love it. Now that I can tolerate more types of veg I've been working to increase my intake and this has really helped. A lot of the recipes are naturally gluten free, some need minor modification. The section that includes sandwiches...

				ARCHIVED R.i.p Kindle....
BabsV replied to ~**caselynn**~'s topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
OMG! It would be a very sad day if my Kindle died. I feel your pain. I just upgraded to the Kindle Touch...still getting used to it. Felt very spastic the first week or so of having it AND transferring content is such a freakin' pain in the you-know-what. I wish they had a better system for doing that...But when the shiny new Kindle comes you will be so happy... -
I've gotten them religiously every year for over a decade -- ever since a really bad case of the flu knocked me out for 3+ weeks (10 days in bed -- literally could not get up...it scared my room-mate to death at the time!) I do not have a problem with eggs so that's never been a consideration. Also, after my diagnosis last August one of my doctors gave...

I was a guest at a wedding recently and the reception was the Comus Inn. The Chef was amazing --just wanted a list of my restrictions in advance, said she'd prepared gluten-free meals previously and no fuss was made about it. The server knew what table I was at, very discreetly asked which guest I was as she brought out the first course and always served...

Cripes, the dust is finally starting to settle from the international move. We're in our house (which the renters semi-trashed...home improvement projects were not on my 'to do' list for right when we returned!), DD has successfully launched at her new school (phew) and DH is settled in his year-long assignment. Oh, and the dog finally seems to be chilling...

I've just moved back to the NoVA area...the nutritionist I saw (Cheryl Harris...*love her*) recommended Dr. Sean Hurley at Digestive Disease Physicians on Kenmore Ave. in Alexandria. She said that she's heard very good things about him from her other Celiac patients. He's also listed on the DC Metro Celiac Organization as a recommended doctor. I have an appointment...

				ARCHIVED Seeing Dr. Fasano Tuesday
BabsV replied to basilicious's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I saw Dr. Fasano almost 2 weeks ago (will post about it specifically but it has been crazy with moving into our house which the renters semi-trashed, etc.) I was diagnosed almost a year ago and had both positive blood work and biopsy so that was not a topic I needed to discuss with Dr. Fasano and his team. You will first see one of the other doctors... -
Hahahaha. After my visit to the doctor yesterday I think I can safely say I basically was having no real care post-DX! Pain still present. The amitriptyline allows me to function for the most part. Having more to do helps since I don't have as much time to focus on it. Stress levels have definitely gone down...I still think it might be related to continued...

I'm off to the Center for Celiac Research on July 31st. Spoke with them today to update my phone number and confirm time/date/etc. They are just so friendly and helpful. Also had 3 enormous vials of blood drawn today at my mother's doctor -- I'll be able to take all the results to MD with me so that they won't have to waste time doing the tests! My...

I was in Krakow, Poland. Wheat and barley are huge diet staples and gluten is everywhere in Poland, e.g bacon, it is in bacon?!?! We're back for what looks like at least 2 years this time around. Then, who knows...I plan to enjoy every single second!!!!
