  1. Hi Lizzy -- Don't feel badly. My two neurologists here swore to me that I had Gluten Ataxia, and both insisted that I needed to be Gluten-Free. They both told me that my body was destroying my brain and retinal cells because of the anti-gliadin antibodies. At the time, I could not accept the possibility that Gluten could cause the problems I was...
  2. I think the thing that scares me the most is that many, many products contain gluten which is hidden under different terms. "Natural Flavors" "Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein" "Maltodextrin" all can contain gluten. I am to the point that I make all my sauces, rubs, etc. My husband said that this weekend we are going to search the net for on-line gluten-free...
  3. Butting In?????? No Way!! We're all in the learning curve! From what I've learned from my MD's standard tests may not pick up on retinal changes from Anti-Gliadin antibodies. An Electroretinogram, and two other tests (I had them done, but don't know what they are -- sorry) can tell if there are retinal changes. I have started developing night vision...
  4. I hope that physicians out there also realize that Gluten sensitivity can cause neurological symptoms without having true celiac disease. When a patient's body produces both anti-gliadin antibodies and anti-perkinje cell antibodies, the two cross-react, destroying the perkinje cells. These are the primary cells in the cerebellum of the brain and in the...
  5. We have pine cones which are medium length and not too fat. If you soak them in water, they close back up, then you can cram them into wire wreath frames. As they dry, the pine cones open back up, and you get this really pretty, full wreath. We also have the little squatty, fat ones that you can hot glue, too! If we want those large, lush pine cones,...
  6. Hi Danijela -- I agree with everything everyone has been saying. Antigliadin antibodies are not NORMAL, but are more common than other antibodies which are specific to celiac -- namely, Anti-endomysial antibodies and Anti-transglutaminase antibodies. Also, small intestine biopsy (a very minimal procedure where they take 4 approx. biopsy specimens) can confirm...
  7. Welcome Lizzy -- I think I know the frustration you're feeling with regard to the neurological symptoms. I don't have celiac -- I do have IBS and a host of other autoimmune diseases. The best I can tell you is this: my two neurologists here are considered "out there", etc. They are also the ones who spend hours with me if need be doing my evaluations...
  8. Oh also, forgot: We don't have pine cones NEARLY that big. Do you guys feed your trees steroids????
  9. We have gray squirrels. They're actually very friendly, a little skittish, and pretty funny to watch. My cousin had one that entered her house through an open window when it was very small. It became the household pet (among the other dogs). It's name was peanut. I totally freaked out when I went in her house and saw this squirrel sitting at the dog...
  10. You poor things! You have REALLY mean squirrels! The only thing I know about getting rid of them is when you plant bulbs: cover them with compost & manure, then pine needles as mulch -- they won't touch them. (Neither would I, personally) There's a site on the internet about getting rid of chipmunks -- I had to go there earlier this summer, maybe...
  11. If I'm getting the jist of your topic, your husband is having a hard time "getting on board" with your gluten-free diet? I'm having the opposite problem. My husband is the one who is paranoid about the foods I eat. He has read the books more than me, and questions a LOT -- "it has ( ) in it. can you eat that?" I think it's the "fix it" mentality. ...
  12. I have been reading everyone's discussions with regard to psoriasis and DH. Are there places where DH is more common? Are there places where psoriasis is more common? I have been diagnosed with Sebo-psoriasis (definitely seborrhea, but not quite psoriasis), but the bumps I have on my face and scalp sound like what you guys are describing as DH. Blistery...
  13. To those people in my family who will understand, I tell them that it is an autoimmune disease. To those who don't, I tell them that "compounds" (sounds better) that are in wheat, oats, barley & rye, and anything MADE from them produce a substance that destroys cells in my brain and retinas. I still don't think they understand, but it sounds bad enough...
  14. Hi Lindsay -- Welcome! I've had autoimmune symptoms for years that just went undetected because I used to be a very passive patient. I started having neurological symptoms a 1 1/2 years ago, starting with my eyes, we think. I started having difficulty walking around September of last year, then things progressed from there. The first neurologist I...
  15. Hi Bluesky8130! Liked the response to cleaning the toaster Wish I had thought of it! I think it would be kind of funny to take it to her practice and ask her to show you how to clean it so that it's fully gluten-free! Hi Claire! too cool about the naturopath. DC's can practice naturopathic medicine to some extent, but our state outlaws "Homeopathic...
  16. It's funny that you mentioned that -- I have kept in touch with one of my former professors that became my friend (I went to college at 31) -- she wants me to lecture on the exact things that you were talking about. She said that there isn't a book out there that can impact students the way that listening to what someone who is in their profession has experienced...
  17. That's kind of how my hairline is . . . I think I will go ahead and get it done. Thanks for the info . . . .
  18. Thank you guys so much. You made me feel so much better. I think that, even at 43, having my aunts complain and question so skeptically put me right back to about age 8 or 9. I know that I'm lucky that my parents are so dedicated to ensuring that I'm gluten-free. They have researched my condition, celiac, gluten-free dieting (they even made sure the pans...
  19. I am negative for Celiac, but have Gluten Ataxia. I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis three years ago. I really don't have anything that looks like psoriasis except inside my ears (grose.) What I DO have, though, is a rash around my hairline and in my scalp that are like pimples that bleed. Is that what DH is like? Three years ago a dermatologist...
  20. If you've helped at all????? Are you kidding????? You have helped a LOT! I did find The Gluten-Free Bible -- I really like the references for fast foods and things like that -- but I do agree that her affluence comes SHINING through. Like we can go to the Alps. I had to stop working last year -- our only "vacation" was going to the Mayo Clinic -- and probably...
  21. Boy, did everything hit home yesterday. My husband dropped me off at the Mall during his lunch hour so that I could shop for my dad's birthday present. Since I can no longer drive, we keep thinking of ways (without using public transportation -- it's not great here) for me to keep some semblance of independence. At any rate, I was at a register checking...
  22. Spina Bifida is a congenital defect which is caused by lack of Folic Acid prior to and during pregnancy. With the significant absorption difficulties celiac disease imposes, it makes sense that celiacs are at more risk of producing offspring with the defect.
  23. I got this advice from Claire on another thread: get the book The Gluten-Free Bibleby Jax Peters Lowell. I'm not a celiac -- but I have gluten ataxia. I don't have a "fast" way of knowing I've been glutened the way that celiacs do, so I'm trying to be unbelievably rigid with regard to my new gluten-free lifestyle -- and to my resolve to live this way for...
  24. Okay . . . . I was going to ask my physician for a referral to a nutritionist, but your experiences have convinced me otherwise! Bluesky8130 -- I am certainly glad that you didn't have to pay for the visit, but I think you should DEFINITELY tell whoever referred you about how inept this chickie was. As far as the lactose intolerance, I have a friend...
  25. Shirley -- thanks for the info! BTW: my roses had aphids this year -- now I know why they were so prolific! Haven't been to Canada yet - my parents have, and LOVED it. Liked your spin on the slug swimming pool! Talk to you soon . . .
