  1. I had an endoscopy and colonoscopy on the same day -- the endoscopy was a piece of cake -- they gave me some lidocaine syrup to drink to numb my throat, then put a bite guard in my mouth so that they could guide the tube. Then they gave me medication called Versed which just puts you in La-La land, and added some Demerol to help control the pain. It was...
  2. I asked my GI doc about going gluten-free prior to the biopsy. He said the cells of the intestinal villi turn over so quickly that he didn't want to give them a chance to heal prior to the biopsy -- and to NOT go gluten-free until afterward.
  3. Hi Guys -- Jen, you are close -- 2 hours -- we do the same thing 85 one day, 45 the next, 90 the weekend, then "possible frost". Shirley, thanks for the information about the crabapple jelly--I don't have a juicer, I have a canning "ricer" -- do you think that would work, or would too much fruit get in? Also, I've never made jelly with Certo or any...
  4. Same here, a few times. No one can tell me why, but it just happens.
  5. Hi Shirley -- I have inflammation of the Costal Cartilages in my first three ribs on both sides. It hasn't been diagnosed as Tietze's disease, though. I have just been told that I have ligamentous laxity, and that it allows the ribs to move too far through range of motion, which causes the cartilage to inflame. I have a friend who's really knowledgeable...
  6. Hey Guys! Julie 5914: I have had issues with lowered DHEA levels and increased cortisol levels, so I will ask my endocrinologist about the adrenals when I see her in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the info. Claire: I was diagnosed with Sjogren's, also. Psoriatic arthritis, also -- but the neurologist is starting to be suspicious that it is dermatitis...
  7. This is a really interesting topic for me -- I'm confirmed negative celiac, but have Gluten Ataxia because of the Antigliadin and Antiperkinje antibodies. Both my kids have asked if they should be tested, but neither show the symptoms. My daughter shows some of the hypothyroid signs I did as a teenager (she's 19 now), and I didn't even think about the gluten...
  8. Okay, the not taking the foods away from you quote must be the one thread that binds all gluten-free spouses together! My husband, who is and has been amazingly supportive actually said that, too! We came to a mutual agreement: if I am making dinner for both of us, then he'll happily eat gluten-free (he's not a picky eater to begin with, and his mother...
  9. That sounds delicious! I'm going to try it as my next gluten-free adventure! Thanks from me, too!
  10. Hey Pauliina! Way to go. Think of it this way: I have never been diagnosed with an allergy to Tetracyclene. When I was a kid, they gave it to me, I broke out with these enormous hives, and they had to take me to the hospital to get medicine. Did they ever do a TEST to tell my mom I was allergic to it? No Way! But they said I was. To this day, I tell...
  11. Thanks for the welcome! My goal for next year is to start Raspberries, Blackberries and Strawberries. Have you guys ever made Crabapple jam before? Personally, I think it sounds disgusting, but we have a tree that's ready to fall over with the suckers and my husband really DOES like it! In what area of the country do you live? I'm in Kentucky, so fall...
  12. Here, Here! My (two) neurologists here now insist that I'm going to continue to get worse and have inferred that I could develop other autoimmune diseases unless I go gluten-free. I think I was just shopping for someone to tell me that this was going to go away and that all my neuro symptoms were going to reverse -- without me having to take responsibility...
  13. I think it might be easier for some patients to ignore what others think than it is for others. I agree that 1) It's no one's business and 2) we really SHOULDN'T care how other people react, but converting that into your personal being could be difficult, depending upon how you were raised, life history, etc. Maybe, Pauliina, it would be easier to venture...
  14. Hey Claire: No Faith in Doctors should be my nickname considering the experiences I've had! I've been to both Mayo and Hopkins -- talk about pompous idiots. I've developed nysgtagmus more recently, as well. I'm having retinal degeneration (they're comprised of perkinje cells, as well) so I've started developing night blindness and colorblindness. It...
  15. debmidge: I am sorry I got your name wrong on my last post. I apologize. As for the neuropathy -- I have had other autoimmune issues and have Raynaud's phenomenon, so both my hands and feet get numb and blue. I don't think that the neuropathy was the initial presenting symptom of my ataxia, though.
  16. deMidge: Thanks for the advice. I'll be there Monday Morning. I'm a physical therapist. I had the practice of my DREAMS. I scheduled each patient for one hour with me -- no 16 year old kids overseeing exercises, etc. I started with lots of manual therapy, then as we progressed to exercises, I was right there with them - watching for compensatory movements...
  17. Hi Claire! Correction -- I can walk, but like a drunk. I stagger, bob and weave, and fall a LOT! It's like someone is turning a light switch on and off on my muscles -- they give out, then overcorrect. I use a walker for short (very short) trips, but a chair for any length of time. I also have some neuropathy/myopathy issues. The neuropathy we knew about...
  18. Anytime -- we're all in this together!
  19. I'm new to this thread, so heregoes: First, Go Kimberly and Shirley!!!!! Since I haven't been able to work, I've been able to pick back up on sewing, cooking, canning, etc. I also have an herb garden which I started last year that is fluorishing now! Going along with the grose stuff, I also have a worm farm so I can use the "tea" for fertilizer and the...
  20. Hi Claire -- Any info with regard to whether the new med is for enteropathy only???
  21. Sorry, but I forgot something -- I found a really good book -- it's called GLUTEN-FREE DIET A Comprehensive Resource Guide. It has an appendix which lists vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein content of quite a few foods. It's written by Shelley M. Case, a registered dietician, and it's ISBN # is 1-894022-79-3
  22. I like your quote by Hunter S. Thompson. He was from my hometown. I took a class from a professor who was a friend of his. Talk about an unbelievable class! Judging from the shopping expedition my husband and I undertook tonight for gluten-free products, it appears that you won't have any trouble at all being vegetarian and gluten-free. We were happily...
  23. Bobcatgirl: Find a new doctor. He/She is not listening. Get to an endocrinologist and have the antibodies tested. Often, you don't need a referral. You have a known autoimmune disease -- don't let autoimmune thyroid disease compound it. Don't wait until you're my age (43) before taking up for yourself and letting the MD's know that you are there...
  24. You may want to take your kids to a physical therapist who specializes in manual physical therapy. It was my experience that frequently kids were diagnosed with scoliosis when in reality, it was their body's compensation for sacroiliac dysfunction -- the kids called it "crooked hips". I had one patient who was scheduled for surgery -- the MD didn't even...
  25. I think I know how you're feeling. I'm not a Celiac, but I have Gluten Ataxia. I have spent the last year getting progressively worse, now I'm in a wheelchair. I told the counselor with whom I work that I felt like the family freak. Now that they have determined that gluten IS responsible for my condition, I told her that I'd feel like an even BIGGER...
