  1. Shirley -- THANK YOU -- that sounds like great advice! And it certainly makes sense to me. Lucky cries for 30-45 minutes after Dave leaves to go to work -- he is inconsolable. Dave said that, when I was independently mobile, he would do the same thing with me. He said now, when Dave drops me off for my "independent night", Lucky just paces the house to...
  2. Don't know ANYTHING about NAET -- I do know, though, that my MD practices kinesiology. Because I'm in the healthcare field, he and I banter about different things. I told him one day that I thought I was "yeast-y". He said "You know, I think you smell yeast-y" (I said thanks a lot). I told him that it was pseudomonas, though. He said -- that's kind...
  3. I'm not a caregiver, but I know for sure that you're not alone, and your feelings are very justified. Sometimes the well is dry. I think that it's alright to let people know sometimes that you're just emotionally tapped out. (Not to mention physically -- I don't see how you do it) I know from experience about the doctor bills. (Review them carefully...
  4. Hi Shirley!! It's good to "talk" to you again! Sounds like you've been REALLY busy! If there was any way at all to be up there at a get-together, I'd be there in a heartbeat -- it sounds like FUN! I don't know what to do with our dog -- he has gotten used to me being home, and when I leave, he is determined that I will be punished. The problem is that...
  5. Oddly, my genetic testing is going to be with regard to this very thing. My grandfather had "parkinsonism" -- a phrase coined by a very old, questionably enlightened family doctor. The funny thing is, however, that my grandfather did not respond to Parkinson's medications, and did not have tremors. Parkinson's disease is a disease primarily of the substantia...
  6. I don't think it's pathetic at all. Don't be so hard on yourself. The entire process, in my experience, takes a long time to go through. I still grieve, still get my feelings hurt, still get really angry . . . . The fact that my family doesn't make any accommodations for birthday cake for me (birthdays are a big deal with our family) is extremely hurtful...
  7. Welcome, Christine! Have to tell you -- Jen and Shirley are absolutely the Goddesses of information with regard to well, pretty much everything around the home! They have taught me so much -- and it's a really FUN thread! Jen -- I am really excited about the craft room. The funny thing, though, is that I'm also the one in the house who likes tools...
  8. Need to clarify -- the first new couch had the back coming off it -- so we had to have a SECOND new couch delivered -- it's here and in -- seems to be O.K. so far, but we'll wait and see! These guys give me the "ick" feeling, though, and the dog DOES NOT like them. They're still wandering around out front -- they should be gone by now. My scare factor...
  9. Hey Jen -- Have been getting the house "cleaned up and out" so that I can have my own craft room! Pretty excited about that. We got a new couch and a new bed, so I've been trying to decide what I'm going to do with the family room and bedroom. Our house is pretty small, so I want to try to make it look as big as I can. I never thought that I would be...
  10. Can't remember if wheat was on my scratch and/or injection tests. I know I had a BUNCH of food allergies -- including soy, so I avoid it. The MD said that I traded my environmental allergies as a child for food allergies as an adult. Will check and get back to you. Don't know if that had any influence on me developing antibodies to gluten.
  11. Great site. Even greater picture! . . . Lynne
  12. I don't have celiac, but have gluten ataxia. My aunt asked, "can't you just eat a LITTLE cake?" (after repeatedly and nicely deferring the cake) My reply was "only if I want to destroy just a LITTLE part of my brain."
  13. Rachel -- that was Funny!
  14. Thanks for the advice, Heather. I'll try upping my calories -- I mostly have smoothies 1) they're easy and 2)I don't feel like eating. I'll try eating fruits & veggies and increase the calories -- my neuro doc wants me to swim to see if it will help increase some of the cerebellar coordination -- maybe that will help with weight loss, as well. Thanks...
  15. I had what appears to be a DH reaction to a L'oreal product. Neutrogena has a long list of gluten-free products -- their newest microdermabrasion system contains LOTS of wheat, though. With regard to Bare Escentuals, I use their make-up; however, their skin revver-upper contains oat derivative. I've written to several companies -- neutrogena gave me their...
  16. Okay, guys, so what can we do about this?????!!!! I eat around 900 - 1000 calories per day, and I'm STILL gaining weight. Has anyone seen a nutritionist who gave them any good information?
  17. Unfortunately, I'm with you on this one. I had Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. I had an enlarged thyroid which had wrapped around the side of my neck behind my trachea and had also grown down under my breastbone. I had it removed because it had areas of hemorrhage -- a potential for the development of thyroid cancer. When I was first diagnosed with Gluten Ataxia...
  18. I wrote a scathing note to both the publisher and agent. I then sent a copy it to KatiUsa's e-mail -- I really stink at the internet, but know how to cut & paste to make a new message. I'm hoping she will post it so that you can read it. It is brutally honest, but to the point.
  19. Thanks for the help -- I'm going back to the neuro on Monday, and I'll be able to tell him of my (and your) experiences. It helps me be much more clear with him, because, up until now, he hasn't had anyone whose ataxia has progressed to this extent (largely because I was undiagnosed for a LONG time), and he hasn't treated anyone with DH. He was the first...
  20. Thanks for the input. As for salicylates, I've used them for years with no apparent trouble (Neutrogena products produce NO reaction). My neurologist (I have gluten ataxia vs celiac, but my antigliadin levels were "outrageously high" previously) has questioned whether my facial "rash" (kind of blistery around my hairline & cheeks -- burns & itches...
  21. Hi Jen! Haven't looked at milk as the culprit. Haven't had a milk allergy before, maybe need to explore it with food challenges, then testing. Thanks for the idea. I am a "dairy gal." As far as the neuro aspects, it's being explored ad nauseum, quite frankly. I'm really getting tired of all the tests, but still really need ideas -- what's a girl to...
  22. Okay, guys -- I have a question and need your help. I have been completely gluten-free (including soaps, shampoos, etc.), now for 19 weeks. I used "Olay Regenerist" microdermabrasion & peel two nights ago. The next morning, I had those familiar bumps all around my hairline and face that itch and burn -- to the extent that both my mother & daughter...
  23. From what I have read and been told, antibodies can develop and escalate at any time, and at any rate. My initial antigliadin antibodies were high, but follow-up testing only three months later found them through the roof. I haven't been genetically tested yet (that's next) -- because I'm not celiac, only gluten ataxia. The anti-transglutaminase and antiendomysial...
  24. Let's see -- 2 Rheumatologists, a Primary Care Physician, one opthmalogist, two neurologists, then finally the psychiatrist that does my ADHD meds referred me to her husband -- a vitreoretinal surgeon -- who referred me to the GI doc. He immediately did bloodwork and set me up for an endoscope and colonoscopy. I guess that makes it nine physicians total...
  25. Not to be grose, but I feel that I am the queen of constipation. I take Zelnorm 6 mg per day, colace (2 in pm at bedtime), and eat about 12 prunes each day, not to mention salads, fresh fruits and veggies and adding flax seed to everything I eat. Still, I only "produce" about once every 10 days. Because I have had IBS in the past -- but it was the don...
