ARCHIVED Genetic Testing
birdie22 posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Should I ask for genetic testing? I'm blood test negative (did ttg, total iga, and DGP). I've been gluten-free for a few months now (with a slip up here and there but very very few). I've posted here how I've felt like I'm on a wild goose chase because I still have symptoms (headache, canker sores, heartburn, muscle aches). I know that having the genes... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free In College
birdie22 replied to redensen's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Definitely talk to someone in charge of campus dining. I work on a college campus and mine is quite good at meeting special dietary needs. On our campus there are 3 dining halls and they post their menus online weekly. Each hall's menus clearly identify gluten-free foods and there's always one or more gluten-free options at each hall at each meal time. The... -
Xmas Eve hubby cooked a wonderful dinner of cornish hens that were pre-stuffed with long grain wild rice, golden raisins, and craisins. We had that with roasted red potatoes and white wine. The hens came from our local grocery which does very good labeling including allergy statements. DH read the label, no wheat, and no allergens listed. W/in 30mins of eating...

ARCHIVED No Flatulence As A Symptom? TMI Sorry
birdie22 replied to birdie22's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have regular BMs daily. BMs are usually in the early morning and my bloating systems usually appear after lunch or dinner. Prior to going gluten-free a month and a half ago they were on the looser end but not D. They've gotten firmer. No belching except for the time I was on prilosec for 6wks. Several times a month and usually for several days in a row... -
ARCHIVED No Flatulence As A Symptom? TMI Sorry
birdie22 posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've posted about being bloated and distended as a symptom. I've realized that I rarely, if ever, pass gas. I know they say the typical person passes gas about 10x's a day. Other than a time a few weeks ago when I ate a very bean heavy meal, I haven't had any flatulence. Zero, zip, nada. I'm guessing that when I'm bloated and distended it's trapped gas. Anyone... -
ARCHIVED First Christmas As A Celiac
birdie22 replied to eborzecki's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just celebrated my daughter's 2nd birthday with the gluten-free Betty Crocker mix. My whole extended family ate it and no one knew it was gluten-free and all said how yummy it was. I am finding it is easiest to a)when possible eat ahead of time, b)bring a dish to pass that I know I can eat that will also be filling, c)when necessary explain that I have... -
Anyone have bloating w/out any other GI symptoms? My biggest complaint other than fatigue is bloating immediately after a meal. It doesn't happen after every meal or every day. I don't have D or C. No gas or belching or rumbling stomach. Just a very distended stomach that is sometimes so big I feel nausea and like I want to poke a whole in my belly button...

In a meatloaf recipe I have that calls for seasoned breadcrumbs I have successfully used a mix of corn and rice chex finely pulverized in a food processor. The meatloaf held together well.

Just wanted to point out that some of my favorites are still "safe." ARCHIVED On A Wild Goose Chase And Ready To Give Up
birdie22 replied to birdie22's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Interesting. Thank you for the perspective. Thank you for the advice on lessening cc. Thankfully I live in the land of Wegmans and buy Wegman's brand vitamins. Wegman's is fantastic with labeling and a nice gluten-free logo is on all of their gluten-free products, including vitamins so I'm ok there. I will definitely work with DH (who does most... -
ARCHIVED Could My Exhaustion Be Caused By Something Else?
birdie22 replied to birdie22's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Glad to hear the magnesium is helping. My doc suggested 200-400mg but the one I found w/ calcium (and what woman couldn't use more calcium) and betaine HCL is 500mg. I'm going with it and can always cut back. -
ARCHIVED On A Wild Goose Chase And Ready To Give Up
birdie22 replied to birdie22's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have another episode of exhausting/fogginess starting now. I didn't have breakfast before my doc appointment, just coffee. Got to work at 9:30 and had a greek yogurt (something I have almost daily) and a handful a nut thins. Took my vitamins. Now just 1hr later and I feel it creeping in behind my eyes along with a bit of a pounding heart beat. It's not... -
ARCHIVED On A Wild Goose Chase And Ready To Give Up
birdie22 replied to birdie22's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My house is not gluten free, DH and two DDs are gluten eaters. It's entirely possible there's a cc issue. Just hard to go to a gluten-free household and replace kitchen items when I'm yet to be convinced that gluten is even my issue. My pcp thinks the exhaustion and fogginess could be onset of migraines (since this last episode was relieved by caffeine and... -
ARCHIVED Could My Exhaustion Be Caused By Something Else?
birdie22 replied to birdie22's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My PCP wouldn't even consider doing anything to boost my ferritin because she considers 40 a good level. She also won't test my hormone levels because I'm having a monthly cycle so she figures they are "normal enough". She did suggest I add magnesium to my supplements and thought that the exhaustion/foggy brain could be migraines since the spell I had this... -
ARCHIVED Could My Exhaustion Be Caused By Something Else?
birdie22 replied to birdie22's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'll be 37 in 2 mos, so yes, I've considered that I'm in that downward slide! My ferritin is 40 (the reference low given was 10), my vit D was 52, and other iron levels were all normal. I'm going to ask my PCP if I should boost my ferritin given that it's on the low normal end. -
ARCHIVED On A Wild Goose Chase And Ready To Give Up
birdie22 replied to birdie22's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for the encouragement. I wish this process was easier. It's just do easy to doubt what I'm doing w/out a diagnosis. I have been eating simple whole foods but have not eliminated anything other than gluten. I've been keeping a food diary but have yet to find a trigger. I'll keep at it for a few more months I guess. -

birdie22 posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I feel like I'm on a wild goose chase. I've had symptoms of bloating, heartburn, nausea, headaches, canker sores, and exhaustion for 14mo now. I've ruled out birth control, all my blood work is normal (including celiac panel, vitamins, thyroid, iron, CA 125, etc). I've had an upper GI and an abdominal CT. All normal. I've done months of prilosec which helped... -
ARCHIVED Could My Exhaustion Be Caused By Something Else?
birdie22 posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have been gluten free for the past month. Thus far my bloodwork has been negative but I am trialing the gluten-free diet to see if if I have improvement in my bloating, heartburn, exhaustion, headaches, canker sores, etc. Yesterday and today I've experienced almost crushing exhaustion. I wake up tired and it gets worse as the day goes on. I was experiencing... -
ARCHIVED Is This Peripheral Neuropathy?
birdie22 posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've noticed a few times over the past say 4-6 months that I'll get a tingling, itchy sensation on my right hand. It usually involves the skin on the back of my hand, my pinky finger mostly, sometimes the area near my wrist joint, sometimes my other fingers, but definitely most noticeable in the pinky. No pain. No numbness. Usually my hand will feel cold... -
ARCHIVED What Could've Made Me Feel So Bad?
birdie22 replied to birdie22's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It happened again tonight. For dinner I had leftover salmon and white rice with smart balance. I had both of these on Monday night w/out problem. About 20min after dinner I was visibly distended that I looked pregnant and the bloating was so uncomfortable that I wanted to rip my skin open to make more room for my stomach to expand. The feeling lasted about... -
ARCHIVED Cookies Have A Bitter/metallic/salty Taste. What Is It?
birdie22 replied to birdie22's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm pretty sure it was baking soda. I bought 4 cookies. They are huge so DH and I split one and the kids split one. I was brave and tried another one the next day and it tasted fine to me. Then tried the last one and even convinced DH to have another bite and that one was fine too. Must have just been a bad batch or it wasn't mixed thoroughly and that one... -
ARCHIVED What's In Your Gluten Free Travel Gear?
birdie22 posted a topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I'm new to being gluten-free and looking for ideas for portable snacks. For the holiday I'm traveling by car so space isn't too much of an issue and we'll stop for food or groceries. The following week I'm traveling by plane to an work conference. I've requested gluten-free meals (which will cover most lunches and dinners) but I'm on my own for breakfast... -
ARCHIVED Please Help Me Kill My Acid Reflux
birdie22 replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I too have heartburn as one of my major symptoms. I've been gluten-free for two weeks only but the acid hasn't gotten any better. Like you, I find it comes and goes in no discernible pattern. Today it's flaring up 2.5hr after breakfast (coffee, egg, grapefruit), yesterday it was after lunch. My meals are pretty much the same every day (I'm a creature of habit... -
ARCHIVED Cookies Have A Bitter/metallic/salty Taste. What Is It?
birdie22 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm new to gluten-free eating. I discovered a place in town that does gluten-free baking and pizza. I bought half moon cookies (black/white) there today to surprise DH and my kids with how good gluten-free treats can taste. Well, they were disgusting. The kids spit them out. DH and I tasted a bitter, I guess metallic type flavor. Dh thought maybe it was too... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms And Monthly Cycle
birdie22 posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Any women here find that their symptoms seemed to fluctuate w your monthly cycle? When I was first tracking symptoms it seemed that I'd get the worst of them one week prior to ovulation and one week prior to my period with consistency. Although in the past 5 months symptoms are more regular than that. Just wondering if it is coincidence.
