I just don't eat there because if you ask them, they state that they don't have anything that's gluten-free. It irks me that they can't be bothered to check their menu and find even 1 or 2 things that would be safe, so I just skip it on principle.

ARCHIVED Shoping For The First Time
frenchiemama replied to heatherh's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Skoki_mom, were you using rice pasta? If so, did you rinse and drain it a few times? Rice pasta generates this really gooey thick film when you cook it, so you have to rinse it really well. -
ARCHIVED Wisconsin Celiacs Unite!
frenchiemama replied to frenchiemama's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
In case anyone is wondering, Chippewa has a population of about 13K and it's like finding a needle in a haystack to hear from someone else on the 'net from the same place. Or someone who has even heard of it. -
ARCHIVED Wisconsin Celiacs Unite!
frenchiemama replied to frenchiemama's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Are you kidding me?? You live in Chip-away falls?? Why on earth would you move here? (j/k) I haven't been to the bloomer support group yet, because I was told that they don't meet in the summer, but a lady from my doctor's office goes there and is really happy with it. -
ARCHIVED I Need An Iron Supplement That Is Gentle
frenchiemama posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I saw my dermatologist yesterday, and she has been doing some research to find a connection between my DH and my problem of getting boils all the time. She told me that she did find a connection in reference to low serum iron and the boils. I do have low iron all the time, even after going gluten-free I am just barely at the bottom of the normal range... -
Well, my DH was "diagnosed" as: - foliculitis - staph infection - eczema - "some kind of dermatitis" (at least that one was close) and of course my personal favorite: - a physical reaction to mental distress (ie, I'm crazy and it's all in my head) I could imagine that DH could be misdiagnosed as psoriasis. However I believe that psoriasis is...

ARCHIVED Upside To Celiac
frenchiemama replied to fisharefriendsnotfood's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's amazing how clueless some people are. I mean, even before I was diagnosed, I certainly knew that things like bread, pasta and cookie dough had wheat in them. But I'm constantly astounded by the number of people who don't seem to know anything about their food at all. What exactly do they think the stuff is made of?? -
ARCHIVED My Husband Is The Best.
frenchiemama replied to frenchiemama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep, no more beer kisses here either. He has stopped drinking beer at home and now joins me in having a Woodchuck. He has been so great through all of this. He is always looking out for me when we go places, and if he goes somewhere without me he asks if they have anything that I can eat. He was being very careful in the kitchen with his gluteny food... -
My mom's late sister is suspected to have had celiac disease. She had a "grain allergy" and eczema, which I think might have been undiagnosed (or improperly diagnosed) celiac disease and DH. She had 9 kids. One of them has Borderline Personality Disorder and one of them was developmentally disabled. Some of the remaining kids have behavioral problems that...

ARCHIVED Carmel/cinnamon Rolls
frenchiemama replied to BamBam's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ack! I just checked out Everybody Eats, and while the food looks delicious, the prices are making me dizzy! $23 for a 9" pie? I wish I could afford this stuff, it looks good. -
ARCHIVED Free Of Celiac Symptoms, But Suspect I Have...
frenchiemama replied to LLCoolJD's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I do get very sick to my stomach if I eat something that is really greasy, possibly because I don't eat that way very often and I'm not "used" to it. Or I could have a problem digesting it, I don't know. Either way, I avoid greasy food! -
ARCHIVED Possible Help For Those Who Can't Take Dapsone.
frenchiemama replied to frenchiemama's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I actually rarely use the steroid cream. That tetracycline + B3 works so well that my DH doesn't really break out anymore. I do use it occasionally for pompholyx (sp? hand eczema). But if it makes you feel any better, I used the triamcinolone (different steroid cream) for 2 straight years nearly every single day with no ill effects. -
ARCHIVED Carmel/cinnamon Rolls
frenchiemama replied to BamBam's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Grandma Ferdon's makes some really, really good cinnamon rolls. Even the non-gluten-free people in my life like them. -
ARCHIVED Question About "associated Stuff"
frenchiemama replied to AmandaD's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Those things aren't inevitable, they are just more common with people who have celiac disease and MUCH more likely to occur if a person doesn't follow the gluten-free diet. -
ARCHIVED Is It Hard To Be Gf And Vegetarian?
frenchiemama posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I've been thinking about vegetarianism for a long time. When I was diagnosed with celiac disease I just put that on the back burner because I was having enough trouble with my new diet. I know that eating at home won't be a problem, but how do you handle eating out and travel? -
He has gone from being totally resistant to even tasting my gluten-free food to agreeing to a gluten free house!!!!! I think what finally made him decide to go gluten-free at home my most recent glutening. He had been using my cooking utensils, and I got SO sick from using a slotted spatula that must have had a little remnant of gluten stuck in it somewhere...

ARCHIVED Should I Go To An Allergist Next?
frenchiemama replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh yeah, I'm allergic to latex and nickel too. I also can't use any scented detergents, fabric softener or lotions. -
ARCHIVED Should I Go To An Allergist Next?
frenchiemama replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm allergic to dogs, tree pollen and two kinds of dustmites (who knew there was more than one kind?) I get sinus problems, weepy eyes and a sore, scratchy throat from the tree pollen and the dustmites. I get hives from contact with dogs. -
ARCHIVED I Think I Have Celiac Diseaser
frenchiemama replied to karmah's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You should either go to a GI and get the appropriate bloodwork and endoscopy, or go to a dermatologist and get a skin biospy (as it sounds like you may have DH). Ask your regular doctor for a recommendation. -
ARCHIVED Aldi's Fit N' Active Brand
frenchiemama replied to PreOptMegs's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We have an Aldi's in my town, but (this is SO stupid) I've never been in there because my husband's ex used to work there and I just think of her every time I see the place. (I know, I'm a moron!) If they have any decent gluten-free stuff I'd be willing to check it out though. Do they have a website? -
ARCHIVED Archer Farms
frenchiemama posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was just at Target tonight and I was very pleased to discover that they list allergens (incl wheat, but I didn't see any that listed barley, rye or oats). They have some really yummy looking things too, especially in the frozen foods. Life is so much easier when you can just tell at a glance whether or not something is safe. -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else Cried Over This?
frenchiemama replied to skoki-mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I haven't actually cried, but I sure have felt like crying and thrown my share of foot-stomping pouty-lip temper tantrums. Overall I feel really lucky to be able to eat as much as I do, but there are certain foods that I don't think I will ever get over. -
Can you handle potatoes? Mashed potatoes made with broth or canned soup (boil the potatoes in the soup and then mash it all together) is what I ate when I had my wisdom teeth out. It's filling at least.

ARCHIVED Living A Normal Life With Celiac
frenchiemama replied to cheryl50's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Honestly, I just forced myself to do those things because I had to. It was horrible at times, but as I was on the gluten-free diet and started feeling better it got easier and easier. Hang in there, it WILL get better. -
I have a friend who is a developmental biologist doing her post-doc at Johns Hopkins (her hubby is an immunologist at J.H. as well) and she always has interesting things to say. This is from an email she sent me (we were discussing my recent glutening). It's nothing earth shattering, but I thought it was kinda neat and wanted to share: just ran...
