  1. Its been almost four months now gluten free. Didnt see much improvement until the third month, then almost overnight I felt so much better. Now, for the last week, I have been having these flu like symptoms, almost like a hangover. Mild headache, nausea, but an INCREASED appetite. Is this gluten withdrawel? If so, is it not kind of late for it too be happening...
  2. I am so glad I dont have full blown celiac and have to suffer what you people do. Being glutened sucks, but I get over it fairly quickly. Positive things I have noticed in the last few weeks: * Better mental attitude and no more fuzzy thinking * No more sore joints * No more cravings *No more digestive problems *Best thing is am loosing weight! God Bless...
  3. I was mostly symptom free after three months no gluten. I believe it takes that long for the gluten anti-bodies to leave your system? I have been reglutened twice since then, and all the symptoms returned with a vengeance, but after a few days they resolved. I am no expert, but I think the longer you are off gluten, if you are reglutened it hits you harder...
  4. Has anybody noticed that gluten affected the function of their thyroid gland, resulting in a slowed metabolism and weight gain or inability to lose weight, and/or their pancreas, affecting insulin levels, which also make it hard to lose weight? If so, were these glands able to recover and get back to normal after being gluten free, and how long did this take...
  5. I mean what other books about gluten/celiac are out there besides Wheat belly-which got the whole ball rolling for me until recently
  6. Thanks lady. I suspect I may actually be celiac since I recently discovered it is in my family, but I am going gluten free instead of getting tested. I am just starting to grapple with the truth that I cant have ANY gluten, even low gluten. BTW beans, etc. don't bloat me at all. Speaking of credible sources, I am starting to think that wheat belly doctor...
  7. I love beer and its the only gluten containing food I cant eliminate. What guy can give up beer on a hot summer night? I switched to Miller Lite, which supposedly has been tested to have a very low level of gluten. After three months gluten free except for that, I still have a beer belly and trouble losing weight. Just got back from a winery tour vacation...
  8. I am not full blown celiac, although it is in my family, but definately gluten intolerant. Every once in a while I have to remind myself. Like Sunday night when I had spaghetti. Just getting over the 'brain fog' and nausea now! I read Wheat Belly Total Health and now I am really confused. He seems to have veered off track, and has morphed into a low carb...
  9. Dr Davis, in his new book, seems to have veered off course, and is now advocating the elimination of ALL grains, and eating more fats. It is essentially a low carb diet. The only problem I see here is that thanks to the gluten, I suffer from fat malabsorption, as many gluten intolerants do, and I think a lot of full blown celiacs do as well. So what to make...
  10. I tried going totally off dairy the last few days to see the effect. I am aware that lactose intolerance is a side effect, but I have a cheese tooth. Swiss is cocaine to me. My belly feels better, but best of all is making happy gurgling noises and going down a bit. I guess I was in denial before, but its dairy free for me. Fat intolerance may also be an...
  11. As I understand, gluten attacks the thyroid gland, reducing metabolism. Has anyone felt that their metabolism picked improved after being gluten free. Can the thyroid even heal itself, like the liver can? Also, I believe the pancreas is affected, reducing digestive enzyme output. Maybe it just the absence of gluten, but my digestion has improved after three...
  12. I am a guy with a huge bloated belly, looks like I am 9 months pregnant. What annoys me is that there is no fat and I actually have a sixpack. Everyone probably assumes I am a heavy drinker.
  13. Since being totally gluten free for almost a month, I have a reduction in most of the other side effects except for the bloating. As I understand it, the compromised digestive system will have a hard time digesting either fats or carbs, maybe both, until the villi grow back (very simplified). I tried eating low fat for a week and felt no difference. This...
  14. Hi Irishheart No I have not had a test done to totally confirm celiac-my doc pooh-poohs the idea. He is very old school, and believes my weight problems and sore muscles, are a result of overeating and lack of exercise. I wish he could see me eat 1500 calories a day and run 20 minutes a day on my treadmill! He also diagnosed me with adult A.D.D., and has...
  15. I have taken this on and off for years. It helped with my sore knees, but the knee problems went away after I ditched the gluten. I have done a bit of research and apparently glucosamine can reduce intestinal inflammation much as it does musculoskeletal, and also binds to lectins escorting them out of the body. Anybody use glucosamine and what are your experiances...
  16. It is my understanding that fat malabsorption is a side effect of celiac, so if its not getting digested its not turning into fat. But, it will cause digestive issues because it hangs around for a long time in your stomach waiting to get broken down. Low fat diets never helped me lose weight, only low carb. It wasn't until recently I concluded it wasny the...

    ARCHIVED Alcohol

I was wondering how many of you have digestive issues such as gas and bloating after drinking alcohol, even supposedly 'safe' drinks like wine. Is it possible that with a compromised digestive system, alcohol is not processed as well?
  18. For those of you that have been recovering for some time, I was wondering which symptoms or side effects resolved first and in what order? For me its been six weeks mostly gluten free until I wised up and am now %100 free. The sore joints, brain fog, sneezing, and itching slowly went away, but I still have the bloating and indigestion, and still not losing...
  19. Has anyone noticed that fatty foods were more difficult to digest before going gluten free? I am wondering if fat malabsorption is related to villi damage. Also, has anyone cut down on fat in an effort to lose weight?
  20. Thanks for the great words of encouragement. After finally realising that gluten was my problem, a month into mostly gluten free I am much better. The big belly has gone down a full belt notch and the joint pains and mental symptoms are gone. I say mostly gluten free because unlike a full blown Celiac, God Bless them, I don't have to be super observant...
  21. I am lucky to not have full blown celiac, but definitely gluten sensitivity. Its possible that celiac is in my family, as is diabetes for sure. I wonder how many people with diabetes develop celiac, and vice versa? Personally, I could only lose weight on a low carb diet, but they are very hard to stick to-eating all that meat. Eliminating just the gluten...
  22. Two weeks gluten free and suddenly I have tons of energy, but also a bigger appetite. I am pretty sure the gluten was one of the reasons I couldn't lose weight, but also I wasn't a big eater. Slow metabolism all around. I wonder if my system is repairing itself? Maybe now I can start losing weight if my metabolism is healing!
  23. This has probably been covered, but does anybody tried any particular vitamins or supplements? I use digestive enzymes and ginger for the bloating. Wondering if there was anything that would speed up intestinal healing? Thanks!
  24. I am sure this has been covered, but I have always had a 'slow metabolism' although tests indicated normal TSH levels. Has anyone noticed their metabolism improving after being gluten free?
  25. Hi I have sleep apnea, and have been on a CPAP machine for years. Its great, and the machines and masks are much better and more comfortable than the old days. Is sleep apnea a symptom of gluten intolerance? It will be a while before I can tell if my sleep has improved since I have just gone gluten free, but like most older guys I am a snorer so I will keep...
