  1. Speaking of anemic men My red blood count has ranged 4.25-4.43 (Normal: 4.5-6.0) for many years. My doctors (several over the years) look at my results and almost unanimously say "Uhmm, that's a little low, but it's been that way a long time and it's not getting any worse; we better keep an eye on that." End of discussion. My mother and older brother...
  2. As everyone says, it is very confusing. It doesn't help that different dr's, authors, etc use the terms differently. It seems like the thinking is converging toward the concept that "celiac disease is just the tip of the gluten sensitivity(GS) iceberg" with celiac disease being just one presentation of GS. Dr. Hadjivassiliou says, in "Gluten sensitivity...
  3. Another good source of info regarding gluten sensitivity is the book "Dangerous Grains" by Braly & Hoggan (~$10 @ Amazon). Sorry I forgot to mention this in my previous post on this thread. George
  4. Claire, Yes, I'm definitely interested in hearing other folks' experience with osteo and gluten sensitivity(GS)/celiac disease. I found out about gluten sensitivity/celiac disease by learning that celiac disease and osteo are often related. I was dx'ed w/ osteophorosis 5 yrs ago. I've since found out that via Enterolab that I have GS but I don't...
  5. I have gluten sensitivity per Enterolab (I don't have either of the celiac disease genes, but I do have a pair of what they term GS genes (DQ1's). I found your statement regarding fungal skin infections being health risks associated with food intollerance very interesting. I've been gluten-free for almost 5 months. I had had what looked like "athletes...
  6. I used York Labs for their 96 Food IgG ELISA Panel recently. After getting my results, I had some questions about their testing and have sent them two emails and have yet to get a reply. Their website states that the testing includes one year of phone or EMAIL support - maybe it takes a year to get an answer. Also after placing my order and having my credit...
  7. Regarding medical records, I found that all my lab work done at Quest Diagnostics Lab is available to me just for the asking - they don't advertise this so one has to ask. They can even pull up copies from several months past. I don't know if other labs do the same, but it would be worth asking. George
  8. Claire, Thanks so much for the list of additional zonulin references. They will keep me busy for a while. Any future info you find would also be much appreciated. George
  9. Claire, Good article! Perhaps there will be other options for dealing with gluten in the future. From your other research do you know what the realtionships are between zonulin, intestinal permeability/leaky gut, and damaged villi/malabsorption. Has zonulin been tied to damaged villi/malabsorption? Thanks. George
  10. I've noticed quite a few of us have osteoporosis/osteopenia issues, Claire, Gina, cmom, WRowland, and myself to name a few. It would be interesting and helpful to hear about others' experience with osteo problems and the reaction to being gluten-free. Any good success stories? What have others done in addition to being gluten-free? My initial intro...
  11. I originally summarized the article because the WSJ subscription agreement clearly forbids copying any of their articles to anywhere, including forums. I think that's a bad deal, but I decided to stick to their rules. HOWEVER, I mentioned the article on the Braintalk forum and someone else posted the article there. You can read it at: Open Original Shared...

I agree with Rachel. Additionally, people who would be tested by Enterlab and get results not indicating gluten sensitivity are not likely to post again on forums such as this which also skews the data we see here. Our world here on this forum is definitely not a random sample - most have problems in search of a solution. I do agree that it is unfortunate...
  13. Regarding celiac disease dx w/o either the DQ2 or DQ8 "celiac gene", according to Dr. Fine on the Enterolab website the distribution of genes vs celiac disease is: DQ2 90%, DQ8 9%, DQ1 or DQ3 1% Therefore by his data there is at least a 1% chance of having celiac disease w/o the DQ2 or DQ8. And 1% is the same probability of someone in the general population...
  14. Today's (11/1/05) WSJ has a good article regarding gluten-free: "Choices Grow for Wheat-free Diets". It begins by mentioning a surging demand for gluten-free products driven by more awareness of gluten sensitivities; in addition to celiac disease it lists several of the other health problems related to GS - even mentions the possible autism connectin....
  15. From what I have learned about celiac disease, a lot of it from this forum, allergists are often not the best doc's to diagnose celiac disease. Probably a good GI doc would be more appropriate. George
  16. As Rachel has already said, the scratch tests do not test for gluten sensitivity/celiac disease. The body generates several types of antibodies in response to certain alergens. The scratch tests are for the IgE type antibody. GS/celiac disease are reflected in the IgA and/or IgG antibody types for gliadin (one of the gluten proteins) which are normally...
  17. We all have two copies of each gene, one from each parent. Each copy comes in different flavors, different alleles in tech-talk. So having a DQ2 & DQ1 implies that one parent had at least one DQ2 and the other parent at least one DQ1. So it looks like your husband has two HLA-DQ (HLA-DQ refers to a particular place on chromosome #6(I think that's...

With great reservation I do take Fosamax. Having the dx at 55 I decided to opt for Fosamax which has done remarkably well at improving density. My dr first tried Calcitonin(sp?) which is a more natural solution, but it didn't help at all. It's the permanence of Fosamax that bothers me - it remains in the bones for years so when bad side effects appear...

Claire, No problem. I was tested by Enterolab; the results were: Fecal Antigliadin IgA 22 Feca Antitissue Transglutaminase IgA 17 Normal for both of the above <10 Fecal Fat Score 84 (normal <300) HLA-DQ Gene Molecular analysis: HLA-DQB1*0602,0602 (per Enterolab report: Molecular equivalent DQ1 subtype DQ6 - twice) My initial intro...
  20. Sorry if I offended anyone with the use of the word disease - perhaps a more politically correct word would have been "condition". My intent was strictly to point out another source of information. George

If I may say so, often what we know about someone as "a name on a page" is way under rated. Here the "name" is a tag related to a person's brain and thought processes - it's these latter aspects that really count. Besides, physical appearance/proximity often triggers all kinds of prejudices, fears, etc. I don't know about others but my mind doesn't run...
  22. Another link for Autism info is the BrainTalk forums at: Open Original Shared Link? Scroll down about 1/3 way on this very long page to get to the alphabetical index. Their Autism forum has over 3000 threads. Scroll on down to "Gluten Sensitivity / celiac disease" for another well attended forum. There seems to be quite a bit of overlap between the...

My wife just recently had the DNA only test by Enterolab. The cost was $150. I agree with Stephanie about the non-celiac disease part - as I sit here with my pair of DQ1's George

Claire, I know how you must feel - a celiac disease dx would be good news in your case. But from what I read there are still 1-2% of people w/ celiac disease who don't have the DQ2 or 8 genes, so maybe you are one of those. 1-2% isn't all that low a probability - about the same as someone in the general population having celiac disease... Of course...
  25. Gina, Thank you for your detailed report. I'm very interested in whatever you learn/experience regarding leaky guts and their repair, so keep us posted. Sorry about your experience with your dr. Hopefully you can find a better one. George
