ARCHIVED Getting celiac disease On National Radio
Nevadan replied to RiceGuy's topic in Publications & Publicity
One radio program I enjoy is NPR's "Talk of the Nation Science Friday" - runs from 11:00a-1:00p on my local PBS station - also available via the web. They cover a wide range of subjects. Their format is usually to have 2 or 3 "recognized authorities" give a brief overview followed by questions from listeners. I emailed them Friday's WSJ celiac article... -
ARCHIVED Front Page Of Wall Street Journal
Nevadan replied to 4getgluten's topic in Publications & Publicity
For those interested, as of 1:00p PST this article is the "Most Viewed" and "Most Emailed" article in today's WSJ!! I'm glad to read that a lot of you are emailing the reporter who wrote the article - there's nothing better than postive feedback. WOW! George -
ARCHIVED Front Page Of Wall Street Journal
Nevadan replied to 4getgluten's topic in Publications & Publicity
This is indeed one of the best new articles I've ever read regarding celiac disease! I am a web subscriber to the WSJ and my subscription agreement allows me to email the article to a "limited" number of people. If you are intested, PM me with your email address and I will send you the article. BTW, just maybe I had something to do with the article.... -
Hi Nikki-uk I have little experience with what you and your husband are going thru; however, there is another group of forums, the Brain-Talk Forums, that might offer you some help. These forums specialize in neurological issues and can be found at Open Original Shared Link Two forums of interest that are accessible from this web address are "Bipolar...

ARCHIVED Damage From Intolerance Only?
Nevadan replied to Sk8ing's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with Tarnalberry, and from what I have read her "classic" intolerances can also include IgA mediated immune responses. IgG and IgA molecules are very similiar differing mostly in where in the body they are predominantly created. It appears from a molecular biology book I've been reading that the IgA's are more likely to be created in the gastro... -
ARCHIVED Looking Over My Blodd Test Results...
Nevadan replied to VydorScope's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You can find a pretty good definition and explanation of blood tests at LabTestOnline Open Original Shared Link Scroll down the "tests" box at the top of the page and select the test you are interested in. George -
ARCHIVED About Blood Tests
Nevadan replied to CMCM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Holly, From what I understand about gluten sensitivity/celiac disease, not only can you have the problem with negative blood tests, but you can also have it with negative biopsy. Neither blood tests or biopsy can definitely rule it out. My opinion is that the most accurate test for many symptomatic people is the body's response to going gluten-free.... -
ARCHIVED Good Cereals To Eat?
Nevadan replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My favorite gluten-free cereal is Nature's Path "Mesa Sunrise". It's a corn/amaranth blend. I get mine at my local Wild Oats. George -
ARCHIVED About Blood Tests
Nevadan replied to CMCM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think the normal definition of AGA is anti-gliadin antibodies. ARCHIVED About Blood Tests
Nevadan replied to CMCM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You might want to refer to Lab Tests Online( Open Original Shared Link ). On their home page scroll the upper search box to "celiac disease tests" and there is a good definiton of a pretty comprehensive set of tests including how to interpret their results. The one test they omit is a total IgA test to make sure you are not IgA deficient. Hope this helps... -
ARCHIVED New To This...lots Of Questions
Nevadan replied to MaineGirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sarah, One testing option is Enterolab ( Open Original Shared Link ). They claim their testing is sensitive enought that even if you have been gluten-free for a few months, they will still be able to get valid results. They also have DNA testing available to complement their antibody testing. They can also test for some of the other common sensitivities... -
Thanks Carrie, Those are some really good links in your post higher up on this thread. George

Hi DQ1^2 Join the club. I self-diagnosed a gluten sensitivity and then tested with Enterolab with identical results as yours. I don't understand the situation with DQ1's and positive TTg either. I emailed Enterolab about this and here is their reply: "" Dear George, I will be happy to help you with your questions. Thank you for your patronage...

ARCHIVED Rapid Test Stick 4 Cd
Nevadan replied to mommida's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sounds like we are in the same boat. I've cut out the additional food items (beyond gluten & casein) that showed up on my York ELISA test but so far have not been able to detect any symptom related to these. At least the test did flag the gluten and casein related foods for which I do have symptoms. Please post again after you've tried eliminating... -
ARCHIVED Rapid Test Stick 4 Cd
Nevadan replied to mommida's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
As I have mentioned in other posts here, my experience with York was very disappointing. My ELISA kit was delayed over two weeks because it was backordered - sound familiar? They also charged my credit card the day I placed the order even though they did not ship the kit for over two weeks. Also I've tried emailing them three times with questions about... -
ARCHIVED One More Question About Enterolab
Nevadan replied to dlp252's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Re shipping the sample back. The courier for mine (~5 months ago) was DHL which is owned by Fed-Ex. I was able to drop my shipment at a nearby DHL/Fedex pickup point (I think it was a Staples office supply store). Anyway there is an 800 number to call to get the nearest shipping pickup points. George -
I would just like to add a comment to emphasize the importance of checking bone density, particularly if you are dx'd with celiac disease/gluten sensitivity - no matter your age or gender. Osteoporosis is one of the most common celiac disease/GS related problems. The sooner one discovers osteo, the more options there are for dealing with it. It is most...

Hi Carrie, Additional info re casein sensitivities: Lots of anecdotal reports in various posts here on this forum - you've probably seen most of them. Dana Korn's book "Wheat free, Worry free" devotes a few pages specifically to casein and conditions such as autism, skitzophrenia(sp?), etc. Google "casein sensitivity" or "casein intollerance"...

ARCHIVED Telling Others About Gluten...
Nevadan replied to Jnkmnky's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Have you ever tried to "talk" an alcohol or drug addicted person into kicking the habit? It's usually a real no-go. Seldom can you even get them to admit they have a problem. There is some of the same addiction thing present in many people who are consumming gluten since the partially digested gluten has a very similar structure to opinoids, an ingredient... -
For those concerned about the effects of casein after going gluten-free, you might find this thread on the Braintalk Gluten Forum interesting: Open Original Shared Link George

Hi Gabby, Since you asked " The first description of childhood and adult coeliac disease was written in the second half of the second century A.D. by a contemporary of the ancient Roman Physician, Galen. He is known as Aretaeus of Cappadocia and his writings which have survived to more recent times were edited and translated by Francis Adams...

Matilda, I think you have explained a lot. Now that I think about it, I was one of "them" (mainstream medicine users) until this gluten-free thing came along. I used to detest people who did the "fad" diets (particularly their high-maintenance restaurant ordering) and that included just about any diet except basic healthy, fresh, non-processed food...

Hi Everyone, Thanks for the responses. It feels better just to be reminded that I'm not the only one with these issues. Sometimes it gets to feeling a little isolated. I think one contributing factor in my case may be that I had no readily observable symptoms before. Osteoporosis, mild anemia, restless leg syndrone, and peripheral neuropathy...

Since going gluten-free I have found that my opinions of some people I considered friends has changed based on their reaction to my choosing to be gluten-free. These are people who I thought were relatively intelligent and who I thought acted accordingly, but when confronted with my gluten-free choice it seems they are pretty mentally bankrupt. Some seemed...
