ARCHIVED Feeling Tired
june27 posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have been feeling really tired lately. I have been gluten/dairy free for 6 months now, but I just don't seem to have much motivation. I am not so sluggish that I can not function, but I am more than happy to spend my days reading on the couch (I used to enjoy this occasionally, but now it seems like I want to do it all of the time). I have also been... -
ARCHIVED Favorite Gluten Free Haircare Products?
june27 replied to abaker521's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I loved my Aveda 'be curly' product line, but they all have hydrolized wheat protein. I have since moved on to Onesta (for shampoo/conditioner) and Beautiful Curl for styling products (leave-in conditioner and curl activating cream). I don't like they as much as Aveda, but they seem to work reasonable well, and are much less expensive. I get the Onesta... -

ARCHIVED Nervous About What To Say When Ordering
june27 replied to AGH2010's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I have been struggling with this as well. I have been gluten-free for 5 months, and didn't even think about eating out until I was 2 months into this new way of eating. Now, I don't eat out more than once a week (we used to eat out 2-3 times a week) I am still trying to figure out how to order as well, but here are a few things that I have learned..... -
ARCHIVED What's For Breakfast Today?
june27 replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I usually eat cereal, but have been trying to come up with a lower sugar alternative...that I can grab quickly and bring with me to work in the morning. Last week - quinoa (I cooked enough for the week on Sunday), almond milk, maple syrup, ground flax seed, and fruit (berries, peaches, apples+cinnamon). This week, I am trying buckwheat instead of quinoa... -
ARCHIVED Now Dairy Free As Well?

I love hummus as well, but I hadn't thought of making chutneys. What a great idea! Do you have any good recipes (or recipe sites) that you could share? -
ARCHIVED Now Dairy Free As Well?

I completely understand what you are going through! I am also a big fan of cheese - never met a cheese I didn't like, and cheese was often my go-to snack (which sometimes turned into dinner). Last December I started seeing a naturopathic doctor for my allergies. As part of the process she did a food senstivitity test, and then a Celiac panel. In February... -
ARCHIVED Successful 1St Attempt At Baking
june27 replied to june27's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks for all of the great support!! Bread will be my next hurdle. Since I have never really cooked bread (without my mom's supervision as a kid), I suspect there might be a few duds before getting that one edible. But, that's OK - all part of the learning process. @freeatlast - I used Bob's "all purpose baking flour" (4c) and 1 tsp xantham gum... -

ARCHIVED Successful 1St Attempt At Baking
june27 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Today I tried my first attempt at gluten-free baking from scratch. I have been reluctant to try with all of the bad things I have heard about gluten-free flour (I realize that it has come a long way, so I had high hopes). I was able to substitute all-purpose gluten-free flour + xantham gum into my old recipe for double chocolate zucchini bread. I also... -
ARCHIVED Low Cholesterol Or Low Cortisol
june27 replied to naturegirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I was diagnosed with Celiac 5 months ago and have been gluten/dairy free since then. I have always had low total cholesterol (105-120 range), with an HDL number teetering around 40 (38-41). I have read that with Celiac and mal-absorption issues it is common to have low cholesterol because your body isn't absorbing fat (and likely the fat-soluble vitamins... -
ARCHIVED Am I Really Being Gluten-Free?
june27 replied to june27's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think I jinxed myself by posting this thread a few days ago... I went out for dinner last night, to a place I have been before a few times. (I don't go out more than 3 or 4 times a month, so I wouldn't say that I have been any one place "a lot"). Anyway, I ordered off the gluten-free menu, but got steak tips instead of the salmon that I have gotten... -
Wow, I never would have thought of that....I'll do my best

ARCHIVED Face Moisturizer
june27 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Can anyone recommend some good face products? I used to use Clinique, but the moisturizer gel and eye cream were not gluten-free (the normal lotion is, but it is too heavy for me for summer-time use). I have been searching for good replacements, but haven't had much luck finding anything that I like yet (I have purchased 2 or 3 so far). Someone... -
Thanks everyone for the posts. It definitely sounds like a stand mixer is the better way to go. After telling my boyfriend about this decision process, he mentioned that he has his grandmother's old stand mixer. I am going to take a look at it, and see if is possible to give it a good scrub and remove any remnants of gluten that might be hanging...

ARCHIVED Need Help With A Snack.
june27 replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I am relatively new to gluten-free and haven't branched out too much in terms of cooking from scratch. Have you tried "1-2-3 Gluten Free" brownies? The box says they are free of the following: gluten, wheat, dairy, casein, peanut, tree nut, corn, egg and soy. The ingredients does list xantham gum - not sure if they have a corn free variety, or if they... -
ARCHIVED Am I Really Being Gluten-Free?
june27 posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have been gluten free for 5 months (starting with my celiac diagnosis). The first thing that I did was to clean out my kitchen (including replaced cutting boards, and plastic/wooden spoons with new ones, and getting rid of any food that either had gluten, or was unknown). I also went through all of my medicines, and cosmetic products. For the first... -
You know, I had considered that as well. Is the reason to not just use a standard hand mixer? I am guessing that the dough might be so thick that it is hard work for the hand mixer, or possibly that the Kitchen Aid is easier to control that you don't mix it too much? I think the only benefit for the bread machine is it sounds like there is less chance...

I was diagnosed with celiac about 5 months ago. Since then, I have been very good about staying on a gluten free diet. While I have not been craving bread, there are times when a nice slice of bread would be great. I have not always heard great things about gluten-free bread in the market, and was not impressed by the one loaf that I did try. I am considering...

ARCHIVED Favorite Gluten Free Haircare Products?
june27 replied to abaker521's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Did you experience any issues with the Aveda products? I have been using them for years, and I love them. I was recently diagnosed with celiac and am trying to figure out if I need to find new hair product or not - I keep seeing conflicting information regarding the presence of gluten in hydrolyzed wheat protein... -
ARCHIVED Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein-Gluten Free?
june27 replied to divamomma's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was diagnosed with celiac about a month ago, and am still coming up to speed with all of the 'rules of engagement'. I have taken care of most of the foods in my house, and am now starting to tackle the bathroom items. Right now, I am stuck on this "hydrolyzed wheat protein". How do I know if it has gluten or not (is it by definition gluten-free,...
