  1. Not sure about the white stuff, but with quinoa, it was going out looking the same way as it went in (sorry for the TMI). I talked to my dietician and she said that all food except for corn is supposed to be digested thoroughly and NOT come out undigested. Thought it was because I wasn't digesting properly (obviously due to celiac). She gave me digestive...
  2. So I came on here to vent because most of my family can't (not that that they don't try to) understand what this is like. I'm 7 1/2 months into my gluten free lifestyle and I was over my future mother-in-law's house for Christmas today. She is wonderful and did everything in her power to make sure that the Christmas dinner was gluten free. At the end of...
  3. I would definitely stay away from the laxatives - we already have problems absorbing foods and if we wipe them out of our system there could be some significant issues with dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. I take digestive enzymes which help the bloating SIGNIFICANTLY and while drinking lots of water (room temperature, not ice cold), lay down and...
  4. I recently had the capsule test done in November and I definitely think it was worth it - but my insurance did cover it. My endoscopy only showed "curling" of my villi, but the capsule test showed that I actually had much more significant damage than we had all thought - more than half of my small intestine has no villi whatsoever. Its a more comprehensive...
  5. Well I'm a female, but I battled with anemia for years before my diagnosis. Iron pills weren't helping one bit, and now we know its because I couldnt absorb them. The anemia got so bad for me at one point that I developed Pica and only ate ice for an entire summer before my mom dragged me to the doctor because she was getting scared. They hooked me up...
  6. Welcome to the forum! I would definitely also check your shampoos, makeup, lotion, toothpaste and anything else that will go near your mouth - they can contain gluten too. Not sure if you have pets or not but my dog's food as well as his cookies are filled with gluten, so you have to be careful with that too. But like others said, keep in mind that 3 weeks...
  7. I was asymptomatic in terms of gastro symptoms but I've had anemia and other issues for quite a while. What finally led to the diagnosis was when I went to the GI after having some red stool, but that just turned out to be red food coloring from a slushie that I had the day before. Now after starting the gluten free diet I've become much more sensitive...
  8. Thanks for posting this! I was absolutely appalled by the article - I signed and re-posted on Facebook to get more people to sign.
  9. Do you have Celiac? Gluten intolerance or allergy? I'd never dream of purposely cheating on my gluten free diet. Even a small amount now makes me feel so terrible that I couldnt imagine what I'd feel like if I had eaten a whole slice of bread. Also, if you do have Celiac (the autoimmune response) and you keep "cheating," then you run the risk of developing...
  10. Well the long and the short of my story is YES - I do get awful mood swings when I'm glutened. Generally I'm a very happy person and am always laughing but when I get glutened it becomes a pretty nasty scenario. My fiance has been as understanding as he can be - he now sees a certain look in my eyes, says "glutened?" and when my nostrils flare, he heads...
  11. I havent tried any supplements to help healing but my go-to has been some rice to bind things up in there (I tend to get D when I get glutened), home made chicken broth (which I keep frozen until I need it), and a good old heating pad that seems to relieve some of the cramping and abdominal pain during the initial stages. Don't know if this will be a help...
  12. Hi Daisymae! Welcome to the forum!! I also dye my hair and get my nails done regularly and I haven't had any issues. I use the UV gel when getting my nails done and I don't think there would be a huge difference between them and acrylics but I've done both with no problems - and my blood levels have come down dramatically since going gluten free, so its...
  13. Aaaahh thank goodness, because quinoa has been one of my favorites since going gluten-free. I'm so thankful that you suggested the nightshade/legume intolerance because the more I keep thinking about it, the more it makes sense. I will keep you posted at how I'm feeling. I will still go through with the tests and blood work just to rule out anything else...

    ARCHIVED Alcohol

OH YES!!!!!! - I posted about this several months ago because I noticed that I was completely hammered after one or two drinks since I went gluten-free. Now I was a lightweight to begin with, but I could handle a few glasses of wine with no problem. Now? Forget it, two glasses of wine at dinner will have me under the table. My fiance jokes that now I...
  15. Yes it does stink when you think you're having nice whole foods that are great for you - but they might not be! Is quinoa a nightshade or legume? I hope not! I LOVE quinoa!!!!!! I make it with chicken broth instead of water which gives it a great flavor and substitutes my love for total carb foods like rice and pasta. I hope I can still eat it!
  16. Its funny that you mention bell peppers - I never really ate them but after my diagnosis started eating them as a snack with gluten free ranch dressing. I noticed that they made me burp A LOT for hours after I ate a couple slices, much more than any other food that I was eating. I'm wondering if that could be my first indication that I'm possibly intolerant...
  17. Hi LJ! I dont have any experience with the DH (although I do have a suspicious growing rash on my fingers, but no blisters) but I wanted to reach out and lend some support. It sounds like you're going through such a tough time but you are getting fantastic advice from others on here who definitely know what they are talking about. I think we all have...
  18. I think you make a great point, Lisa - when I read your post I started thinking of when/how often I ate nightshades/legumes. When I started the primal diet, I was strict and hardcore about it for a month and then as the food started running out in the fridge (I work full time and am in school so I have limited time to food shop), I started resorting to things...
  19. Thank you Lisa!! I always had some level of fatigue just due to my chronic low iron levels, but the fatigue definitely got worse over the last month and a half - I'm falling asleep at work and although everyone is very understanding of my issue, I cant keep doing it. I never really had joint pain before, and its not terrible, but its like dull aching constantly...
  20. Thank you so much! Its kind of hard for my friends to understand, but I know people on here will definitely appreciate the amount of effort that goes into eating gluten free. I'm not sure what thyroid tests they ran, but hopefully when I ask for all the copies of my blood work I can see whether or not they tested for it. I will definitely make sure I ask...
  21. I asked the same thing too - apparently every lab has varying levels depending on the sensitivity, but the ranges are usually pretty close - at my doctor's lab anything above 5 is abnormal, so there's still a bit to go.
  22. I was diagnosed in May 2012 and just recently went back for my 6 month-ish follow up - the doc decided to run my Celiac panel again while he tested for my chief complaint of fatigue and increasing joint pain. I expected my TTG (was originally 100) to drop down to about 60 which I would have been very happy with given that I've had a few common rookie mistakes...
  23. I have an iphone so I'm not sure if you'll have these apps - I dont have any for food logging or symptoms but I do have a couple apps that have been really helpful. Gluten Free Registry is an app that will map your location and tell you all the restaurants and food stores in the area that have gluten free products and that has been a lifesaver, especially...
  24. Please don't tell us that that you wouldn't be able to handle our situation because you "would just DIE without breads and cakes" - we get it, you like bread....personally, I'd prefer to go an hour without running to the bathroom... (I heard that one THREE times this week!) But more importantly, get yourself tested!! I had no idea I had it, so...
  25. To the best of my knowledge, in simplistic terms (I'm sure others can explain it better), but an allergy causes a histamine response in the body and even sometimes lead to anaphylaxis where the airways constrict and is a very dangerous situation (think of a peanut allergy). An allergy is a hypersensitivity to a food or trigger. With Celiac being an autoimmune...
