  1. Rosetapper - I am LOVING the sound of pouring butter over everything - or cheese!!! Now, I'm not a fan of fancy or moldy looking cheeses and I'm perfectly happy with the cheddar and mozzarella cheeses, are those appropriate for this diet? I didn't think they were but if it'll help me eat broccoli and it wont affect the diet too bad, then I'm willing to...
  2. I'm not nearly as experienced as other folks on here but in terms of eating products produced in facilities that also produce wheat - DONT DO IT! I didn't think it was a big deal and two weeks ago got gummy bears that claimed to be gluten free but clearly said that its made in a facility that produces wheat. I thought "No big deal, I'm not that sensitive...
  3. I can really appreciate this post from all angles, as I have Celiac (obviously), have struggled with mild anxiety for most of my adolescence and young adult life, and ironically enough am a mental health therapist for children and adolescents. Its interesting, when we're in school doing our clinical training, they ALWAYS teach you that the FIRST rule of...
  4. I LOVE PF Changs - its the only place I go to eat where I not only feel "normal," but I am completely at ease because I never had an issue there. The one by me (Hackensack, NJ - well its about 40 mins away but worth the drive!!) is very careful and everyone is so knowledgeable. If I had one closer to my house my wallet would be in even bigger trouble -...
  5. I'm three (almost four) months into going gluten free and I was extremely tired, especially around 1:00pm right after I had my lunch. I fell asleep at my desk a few times and was totally embarrassed when a coworker found me. Vitamins levels are fine, thyroid/TSH levels fine, no explainable cause. Still not sure what the issue is but I can definitely understand...
  6. Thank you so much for your responses!! I know its only been two days, but I did feel like I had more energy today and I noticed that I was full after meals and not looking around for snacks (BIG improvement). I dont want to sound over-confident but the scale slipped a bit down in the past two days, so I'm very hopeful. Maybe this spare tire I have been...
  7. After being diagnosed in May, my honeymoon is over and I'm noticing that I'm starting to develop a lot of sensitivities or my body is just going through a rough phase. Nothing in my food journal seems to be different or out of the ordinary, so I'm thinking I'm just hitting a rough patch. I've been eating right and exercising and so far am happy to report...
  8. I feel your pain!!! The EXACT same thing happened to me three weeks ago - I bought gummy bears from Rite Aid which were labeled "gluten free" and I even read on the back of the package that they were made in a facility that produces wheat products. I remember thinking to myself "What are the chances? I cant be THAT sensitive!" So I went ahead and bought...
  9. How do you feel about starting birth control just to make your periods regular? This might be TMI (sorry) but my doctor has me taking three months of birth control in a row before I get my cycle to help with my anemia which can get pretty bad. Its worked and I'm not as fatigued and my periods are always regular. I noticed that when I went gluten free,...
  10. I often wonder if my sensitivities are changing too - I never had GI symptoms before my diagnosis and could eat whatever I wanted, keep it mind I was drinking about a gallon of milk every day and a half. But now things are different and I'm either getting CC'd or I'm developing new sensitivities, but I just cant put my finger on it. I'm also trying to keep...
  11. Thank you so much for all your replies - I wasn't sure if it was just my body doing weird things again, or this is common amongst "us." I'm going to have to try some of that potato vodka and see if that makes any difference. If not, I'll just know that whenever I go out with my friends, $5-10 is all I need!!!
  12. I was just recently diagnosed (in May of 2012) and I was putting on a lot of weight before my diagnosis. All throughout college I was about 120lbs and just before diagnosis I topped out at 155lbs (I'm 5'3"). Just like you, never had any GI symptoms and the diagnosis was a total surprise. Diets and exercise never worked and I just kept packing on weight...
  13. I completely agree - I always feel pressured to say that I have Celiac so that they know that it should be taken more seriously. Those people who do the gluten free as a fad diet really tick me off - they should just go to Domino's....
  14. My sister went on a cruise last year (Celebrity Cruises) and the family at the dinner table had a father who had Celiac. Since the ship knew before hand and was reminded on the first night of dinner, they would bring out the menu the night before to see what alterations needed to be made to accommodate him. Since he was so pleased, my fiance and I just...
  15. I have to try the ciders and the gluten free beer, but since I never really liked ciders or beer anyway it wasn't a huge loss for me when I went gluten free. I LOVE wine and I'm just so shocked that I used to be able to do half a bottle with minimal issues but now two glasses has me absolutely hammered!! Another huge anxiety I developed with my new sensitivity...
  16. Hahaha that's what I've been saying to my fiance! "I'm now an even cheaper date!" He's gonna have to be the designated driver from now on hehee....
  17. I was diagnosed in May and have been pretty strict with my diet (except for a few accidental glutenings here and there). I had ONE drink tonight at a party (a very light cranberry and vodka) and after that one drink I was extremely tipsy. I also had one and half glasses of wine several nights ago and had the same reaction. My family thinks its hilarious...
  18. Although my fiance has thankfully been supportive the entire time, he still didnt really understand about the cross contamination. It wasn't until my first glutening that he saw how serious it could be (keep in mind I never had GI symptoms before my diagnosis, it was kind of a surprise really). After he saw my abdomen triple in size, my joints stiffen up...
  19. Welcome to the forum! Definitely start a new thread with this question so you can get more responses. It seems that it is normal to have some ups and downs as you're trying to heal - remember, you body is now being able to absorb foods that it might not have been able to before. Also, keep in mind that more food intolerances may pop up as you're starting...
  20. There is an app for your phone called "Is that Gluten Free? - Eating Out." They list most fast food places and the gluten-free items on the menu (if any). It's definitely worth the couple of bucks you have to spend on it. Hope this helps!
  21. That's great!!! Its great to hear that places are making attempts now - the Mets ballpark also does the same thing, so if the Yankees just get on board, then I'll be going to more games!!!! Best wishes!
  22. I definitely had the same concerns before the first time I ate out gluten free. Just this past weekend, we were celebrating my fiance's birthday (non-celiac) and he really wanted to go to this Asian-fusion place in our town. They did not have a gluten free menu, so I called the manager early in the day (to avoid the crowds) and spoke with him to verify...
  23. I never had GI symptoms and like you was diagnosed almost by accident. Now after only several months of eating gluten free I've found that I'm extremely sensitive - I could eat 3 slices of pizza and a bowl of pasta and NOTHING. Now today, I ate gluten free gummy bears but then saw on the package that it was made in a facility that also makes wheat products...
  24. I too had moderate acid reflux (self-diagnosed) and it wasn't due to an ulcer (as my endoscopy confirmed). I also had terrible chest pains that stumped the doctors - it got so bad one time that I went to the hospital twice in one day because I thought I was having a heart attack (I am 28 years old and should not be experiencing those symptoms). I am happy...
  25. I am a HUGE fan of Les Mis and this video totally made my day! I had to listen to it a few times to make sure I heard everything! I loved it so much I shared it on Facebook with all of my friends....thank you so much for posting this!!
