  1. While I agree that you can technically bring your own food if you wanted to, it seems like the damage is done with them not considering your feelings. I know if I were in that position, I'd be bitter throughout the whole dinner anyway and probably wouldn't even enjoy it. I'd probably sit this one out, but talk to the family members that you're closer to...
  2. Thank you everyone!!! Christine - Yes, my endoscopy was a 1 year follow-up...the capsule/video test I took in October showed continued damage in my duodenum (even though my TTG levels dropped significantly) so the doctor just wanted to do another biopsy just to make sure that I continued to heal. I was curious also (and needed a little conformation that...
  3. Finally some good news - after an unexpected, shocker diagnosis on May 3, 2012, many dietitian appointments, 2 endoscopies, 1 colonoscopy, 1 capsule test, and a partridge in a pear tree later, I finally got the news from my GI doc that my TTG levels are within normal range and an intestinal biopsy confirmed that my villi have returned back to normal!!! The...
  4. Welcome to the forum! Expect to have your ups and downs before finally feeling better - it unfortunately doesn't happen overnight. I was gaining a ton of weight too before my diagnosis, but sticking to a whole foods, low carb diet (read about the Primal diet) has helped me lose about 17-20lbs since my diagnosis. It also helped my gut heal as I was adjusting...
  5. I had an iron infusion many years ago (before I was diagnosed) and it was fine for me. No reactions whatsoever, but the benedryl did make me very tired and loopy - in fact, I was so loopy that I started hitting on the very attractive pharmaceutical rep that came into the office that day - trying to incoherently talk to him as I'm hooked up to these IV's...
  6. I saw this a while ago, and being not only Celiac but a HUGE Les Mis fan I couldnt stop laughing!!!! Thanks for sharing again!!!

    ARCHIVED Vacation

If you have a smartphone, download the free app "Gluten Free Registry" - it will pinpoint your location and give you all the places nearby that have gluten free menus or items. They will also provide you will reviews of other people's experiences with those establishments. It's been a lifesaver for me!! Enjoy your vacation!!!
  8. You're doing whats right for you body, which is the most important. I remember having so many conflicted feelings (I still have them!!!). On one hand, we get mad when people are insensitive and don't understand what its like to have this lifestyle, but on the other hand it feels weird and more isolating when people attempt to go out of their way for you...
  9. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember hearing (or reading on here maybe) that if someone with NCGI continues to eat a high gluten diet, they could still suffer some damage in the small intestine from all the aggravation from the gluten, and eventually lead to leaky gut issues. Is that true? Just making sure I have my facts straight... ...
  10. Hey Chrissy, I have always had a sweet tooth too! I cant do much with the "sweet suggestions" unless you can do apples, dried cranberries, and raisins - if so, I have a fantastic recipe for something thats healthy but sweet. In terms of losing weight - I've had a lot of success on the Primal diet. Its a no carb, high protein//veggie/healthy fats diet...
  11. Dani! This is exactly how my fingers looked!!! I dont get it anywhere else on my body but I do get eczema on the back of my neck (who knows, it could be DH), but I get those itchy, red bumps on my fingers, but they dont really look like they are filled with anything. They're definitely raised, but I dont see any puss or fluid in them. It hurts when I wash...
  12. I get fantastic grass fed beef from a local place and I cant even describe how much easier it is to digest. After eating grain-fed beef from the regular grocery store, I would always have a heavy feeling in my stomach and it would take a while to digest. Totally different with grass fed meat - it tastes so much better and is soft and tender. I definitely...
  13. While I know PPI's are effective, you definitely dont want to go developing c-diff. I've seen some cases of that in the hospital and it gets pretty nasty. Not sure if this will work, but maybe talk to your doctor about taking extra probiotics to help maintain the healthy flora in the intestines? C-diff develops when antibiotics or PPI's kill all of the...
  14. My period symptoms got much worse after going gluten free...I ended up calling my doctor because it was getting to be too painful. She switched my birth control medication and hopes that will help. I never had really bad PMS symptoms but the bloating and cramps got really bad after going gluten free. Hopefully it will settle down soon and the new medication...
  15. Hey Opa! I haven't been actively avoiding those foods, but as a nursing student I know that I should be! The only thing that I notice now is that if I go overboard with citrus type drinks (like frozen fruity alcoholic beverages) then I will get a bit of pain and reflux. I used to be uncomfortable all the time but since going gluten free I noticed that...
  16. I'm in Union County, NJ - right next to you - I have some great recommendations for places to go!! Would love to talk! Feel free to message me anytime!!
  17. In my experience with cdiff (as a nursing student) its always been accompanied by horribly foul smelling diarrhea. If you're still concerned about having cdiff definitely go see the doctor as its passable to others. Hope you feel better!
  18. Have you tried taking digestive enzymes? It might be able to help you break down the food more...
  19. I was having a banging erratic heart beat for a little while and had no idea what that was!!! It didnt hurt or anything but it scared me as I was laying down to go to sleep and would feel this bounding heart beat about every minute or so!! I spoke to my doc and he didnt seem too concerned but it ironically stopped after I cut out all processed foods again...
  20. I am not a vegetarian, but I do understand your feelings of panic right after being diagnosed! I was completely overwhelmed in the food store the first few times, but please believe me when I say that you get used to it and it becomes easier as you go along. The newbie thread is a great source of information and I would definitely encourage you to read...
  21. Hahaha I feel the same way!!! Thank goodness my boss is VERY understanding and was just diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis herself so she is very sensitive to autoimmune issues. It just sounds sooo ridiculous to call your boss and say, "I'm sorry, I cant make it in today, I ate a cookie ...and just so you know, I'll be mentally out of it for the next week...
  22. Welcome!!! If you read a lot of other posts on here you'll seem to find that most of us had a "roller coaster" period when we first started out being gluten free. It seems that our body needs to adjust to not having gluten in it and I know personally that I had brain fog, fatigue, stomach issues, and was pretty moody for a while. It seems that we truly...
  23. From what I've read on here and other places, it seems to be general consensus that any kind of major body stressor can trigger Celiac - surgery, major illness, pregnancy, stress - it compromises the autoimmune system and can trigger the autoimmune response to gluten for someone with the genetic predisposition. I had anemia for years but no GI symptoms until...
  24. Thats so great to hear! Thanks for sharing this! Its so nice to feel supported and not like an alien when you bring your own food. So sorry to hear that the kiddies got sick though...hope they feel better!!! Happy Holidays!!!
  25. Thank you for all your responses!! Its kind of comforting to know that I'm not the only one who's done this - but at the same time I'm sorry that it happened to you guys too! I think it was more the anxiety reaction and thinking to myself "Ok, I probably have about two hours to prepare myself." The waiting game is what sucked the most. The digestive enzymes...
