  1. I have gotten several gluten-free ice cream cakes over the years from Dairy Queen. However, I went in and gave a huge lecture to the woman who makes the cakes. For some reason we cannot have the fudge sauce (this my have changed I have not looked into it for a couple of years) which goes between the layers. For obvious reasons (wheat) we cannot have the crunchies. So, we end up with an ice cream cake with candy between the chocolate and vanilla layers. I always remind her to use a new tub of icing and a clean cake mold. So, it can be done but make sure you educate the person making the cake (not just the kid who runs the register). I would also encourage you to go in and read the icing labels. The icing my store uses is safe but I would check with the store.

  2. I am so sorry your race was not what you wanted. My dh is a marathon runner and can get cranky if a race does not go his way.

First, I would realize that you were just dx. It took me 6 months before I even started to feel good, and I was not running! You may need some more time to heal. Second, it does sound like you have one answer, training. I can't tell you how much dh trains for these races! I really think you have great ideas for the next race regarding food. I would also add research to that list. I know peanut m&ms are safe. I am almost positive that powerade is fine, I know for sure that gatorade is. After reading one of my dh's gu it reads safe but I would not have it without confirming it is gluten-free. Sometimes you can find out ahead of time what will be on the race course. Then do research to determine what is safe.

Do not be to hard on yourself, you crossed the finish line! That is a heck of a lot more than I could do.

  3. I wish I had an answer for you, but I don't :( I have had these bars in the past (think several years ago) and did not like them. They did not sit well in my stomach. I do not think it was a gluten issue, my body just didn't like them.

You may try calling back to see if you get a different person that could answer some questions. I have never had a problem with Kraft foods. I trust this company. But I am like you, I have not had anything that states the same line but I do risk it with same facility.

  4. My triglycerides are slightly elevated last time they were checked. The dr was not too worried. I looked into it though and think my problem was the last thing I had before the fasting was a cocktail! I found out that alcohol can raise your numbers. I think I read somewhere that you should refrain from alcohol four or five days before the test.

Is the dr worried about diabetes? That's what I thought this test was for. I know there are celiacs who also have diabetes. I do not know how common that is.

I wish I could help more.

  5. I have been on one cruise since being gluten-free. I find it difficult at times to be surrounded by wonderful looking food and not have any. Part of my issue is prior to dx the food was such a huge part of cruising for me. I need to change my perspective.

I know that Holland America is owned by the same people that own Carnival. I have heard that Carnival will provide safe meals but they are plain. So I am not too surprised by their lack of imagination in the food department.

I was on Royal Carribean and was very impressed with the knowledge of the management. Waiters and bus boys had no clue. I found the desserts to be lacking, as in I had none! I received fresh fruit at the end of my meal as my dh had cake and other goodies. I did get sick but I get sick anytime I seem to go out. Just highly sensitive.

I am hopeful that our next experience will be better since it is a longer cruise, we will see.

    Glad you enjoyed the sights!

  6. The Brothers Moon on Main St in Hopewell is very good, and they should be able to make some things gluten-free. I have had some great burgers (without the bun), salads, and risotto there. You can check their menu online. Most of their ingredients are fresh and local. Might be less $$$$ than the Blue Bottle. But PF Chang's is the only place around with a dedicated gluten-free menu, dagnab it.

    Thank you Lee for this!

  7. I also noticed that early on in my healing that there were times that I was just sick. I know that everything I had eaten was gluten-free. It took me a long time to heal enough that I did not have the D often (about 6 months). Hope you are feeling better. This also might be a good time to remind your family about cc and how sick it can make you.
