ARCHIVED Are There Any Other Celiacs That Are Overweight?
kevsmom replied to Jules's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I lost 30 lbs before I was diagnosed with Celiac, and could actually comfortably fit into some of my clothes. In the past 6 months I have gained back the 30 pounds (plus 10). I know that a lot of my problem is depression. I have a real problem with portion control. It would be nice to be able to freeze leftovers for extra meals, but I will eat a... -
ARCHIVED Any Soft Breads Commerically Available?
kevsmom replied to Goliadman's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My local grocery store sells Food For Life Rice Pecan Bread in the frozen food section near the waffles. If you wrap a couple of slices in a paper towel and microwave them for about 30-40 seconds, you get nice soft bread. It has a little sweetness in it from fruit juice. It is very good with gluten-free peanut butter (Jif, Peter Pan, etc...) and gluten... -
ARCHIVED Meal Ideas For Someone Broke Severe Fatigue
kevsmom replied to healthwarrior's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You might find some ideas in my reply to Frustratedneicey Pinned "I guess I have to Starve". There is a list of mainstream gluten free foods. Good Luck. -
ARCHIVED Introduction And Question
kevsmom replied to pedsarnp's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I use a lot of paper towels to prepare my food, rather than risk laying in on the counter. I agree with Rice Guy. As a nurse practioner you probably know that celiac disease is hereditary. It would probably be a good idea to have your kids checked...Yeah, look at me suggesting what you should do. I was diagnosed with celiac disease 6 months ago, and... -
ARCHIVED I Guess I Have To Starve?
kevsmom replied to frustratedneicey's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have been home recovering from ankle surgery for the past 6 weeks. It has given me opportunity to do a lot of internet research. Here are some things that I have found that might help you. Remember, product ingredients do change sometimes, so you still need to read labels for changes. Mainstream Gluten Foods (Stuff you can find in the food store)... -
When my son was very little, once in a while he would tell me "My heart is beeping fast". I just told him to sit down and chill out. After him telling me this several times, I really looked, and could see the pulse in his neck actually jumping. I took him the the doctor because he had an ear ache, and the tachycardia happened right in the office. She...

Thanks for the reminder. I was looking at hand cream the other day, and realized that it had OATMEAL in it. Being a guy, you probably don't know this, but oatmeal is supposed to be good for dry skin...not this dry skin!

I know in the past, Progresso Chicken and Rice soup has shown up on the site as being gluten-free. My son just bought me 6 cans. The current label lists MFS - (doesn't state what kind). It also says that it contains soy, milk and egg products. Would you consider this gluten-free? Would you eat it? It's pretty cold and windy in MD. It would...

I sleep with a fan on in my room all year round. Some nights, I do pull the covers up over my top half and just let my legs hang out. During the really cold weather I do put the cover on, but still leave the fan on for circulation. I am not only hot at night. I also keep a fan on under my desk at work all year long. I've had people sit down at my...

I also had a doctor who admitted he was wrong. I was suffering from blood related problems and was seeing a hematologist as well as the GI. I had bruises all over my body, I was very anemic and my blood would not clot very quickly. I suffered a bloody nose that would not stop and ended up admitted to the hospital and received 6 units of blood and 2 units...

Hi BusyBee, I'm fairly new too. I was diagnosed in April, and through this forum I find myself learning new things every day. Everyone is so helpful! If you have specific questions, they usually know the answers or are happy to get them for you. I have suffered from different bouts of diarrhea in past years, that have lasted for about 3 months...

Wegman's recently opened about an hours drive from my house. I signed up on line at wegmans.com for their club card. I know I have posted before about their site having a list of gluten-free foods that they carry, and a free recipe search for gluten-free recipes. Yesterday I got a very nice menu magazine in the mail that included holiday features. The...

ARCHIVED White Coating On Tongue?
kevsmom replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree that the white coating is probably due to yeast (thrush). One way to get rid of the "bad" yeast is to replace it with "good" yeast like gluten-free yogurt or acidopholis milk. -
ARCHIVED What To Cook For Turkey Day?
kevsmom replied to racergirl435's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I found an interesting recipe that I'm going to bring for Thanksgiving that I think everyone will like: Green Beans with Crushed Almonds 1/2 lbs. green beans, trimmed (I'm going to use frozen) 1 1/1 tablespoons unsalted gluten-free butter 1 garlic clove, minced 1/4 cup blanched whole almonds, finely ground Salt and Pepper Cook beans... -
I recently tried the Kinnikinnick hamburger rolls. Just wrap in in a paper towel and nuke it for about 30 seconds and it nice and fresh and soft! I don't know if they are Gluten-free Casein-free...Sorry I wasn't paying attention to that part of your post. Cindy

As of 11/04 Ocean Spray Whole Berry and Jelly Cranberry were gluten-free. You might want to check the labels to see if they still are. As of 3/05 Safeway Whole Berry and Jelly Cranberry were gluten-free. Happy Thanksgiving! -
ARCHIVED Good Cereals To Eat?
kevsmom replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
In addition to the Rice Crunch-ums, Health Valley also makes Corn Crunch-ums. If you mix them together it tastes like whatever that cereal is called (It's been so long since I've had it , I can't remember - you know the one in the blue box). -
I have to take a pair of scissors or a letter opener to scratch my back all the time. I can't get my 17 ear old son to scratch it for me ("euw mom " ) There is no rash. As far as I know, I have not been glutened, but I'm still learning.

ARCHIVED Product Updates
kevsmom replied to eeyor-fan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I contacted Hidden Valley and on June 6, 2005 they sent me the following reply: (As always, read the labels in case ingredients have changed.) I hope this information helps. Thank you for contacting us about HV Full Cal Bottled Salad Dressing - Original Ranch. We always appreciate hearing from our consumers. We do have a couple products that are... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Dog Treats?
kevsmom replied to hsd1203's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
How about trying a little piece of cheese as a treat? Some dogs like carrots - you can even put a little peanut butter on it. That would totally avoid having to deal with the regular dog treat issue. Good luck - Cindy -

ARCHIVED Substitute For Sour Cream?
kevsmom replied to Claire's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I am only gluten free - not Gluten-free Casein-free, so I don't know if their are any, but how about plain yogurt? -
Mandigirl, I second Nadtorious' comment about not absorbing nutrients. Before I was diagnosed with Celiac, I had problem with hair loss. I would get out of the shower and the whole front of me would be covered in hair. My doctor believed it was caused by medication that I was taking. He suggesed that I take Zinc and Selinium supplements (found in...
